Nutrition goals yesterday

Thursday, February 25, 2010

I was within range for EVERYTHING (except iron but I need more of that so it's okay that I'm over). Even Fibre which is the one that kills me everyday. I'm totally stoked!

Walking in the cold

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

A lady at work asked if I wanted to walk to the Tim Horton's at break time and I was all, NO it's soooooo cold out. And then I saw that I had gotten a comment on my blog about refocusing and in that blog I had made it a goal to say YES to walks at the same time as saying NO to the pastries and coffees. So I phoned the lady and asked if she was still going and said I would go with her. I have a toque and scarf and mitts and a good coat and I'm wearing long johns today anyway because I was cold this morning so I think I'll be good and bundled.

I just need a little nudge sometimes and the comment reminding me of my blog post was very timely.

Nice job! I love walking in the cold actually ... it's the slippery sidewalks that always deter me!

Dinnertime

Monday, February 22, 2010

The Moroccan Stew smelled FABULOUS. Unfortunately, the taste didn't really come across. And I don't know why. We did have to cook it for longer than the recipe called for because we were at work so the butternut squash was a little mushy. And I did forget to add the chickpeas at the very end. But I couldn't taste any of the spices we put in, although we could smell them.

I would try it again, on a weekend when I could keep an eye on the time better. But we were disappointed this time round.

On Sunday we made Cornish Hens for supper. And making them went really well. The bottom never crisped up like the top did so maybe they should have been flipped halfway through roasting? I've never even done a chicken before so I'm a little in the dark. And while they were good, it kept throwing me off how much it looks like a chicken but then doesn't taste like one. I don't know if we would make them again. Might as well step up and make a chicken if that's what my taste buds are expecting.

So the weekends food adventures weren't that great but the coming week will be good. And I'm glad we are trying new things. So at the grocery store they had jumbo packs of salmon fillets on sale and with bonus airmiles so we bought them and we're going to be eating fish for the week. First up is a honey mustard glaze. Sounds tasty!

Flexitarian Supper Adventures

Thursday, February 18, 2010

So tonight we're having a Moroccan Stew for supper with butternut squash and various other veggies. We were preparing everything last night so we could just pop it in the slow cooker.

I peeled the butternut squash and was attempting to cut through it when Mark came up and said that he would do that. He's standing there, cutting the squash into bite sized chunks and is not pleased at how difficult it is so he just declares that we are NEVER MAKING THIS AGAIN.

Once all the prep is done, he asks if there is any meat that needs to be cut up. I said no. He's all, no chicken? No, no chicken. No Beef?!? No, no beef. He's boggling at me so I say We're going FLEXITARIAN! And he's so confused and thinking I'm crazy until I explain that flexitarian means we have some vegetarian meals and some with meat. Which we do all the time. It was so funny, the look on his face when I said Flexitarian.

And then this morning, the onions needed to be sauted with the garlice before going into the slow cooker so Mark did that while I was showering. Once we go to work, he emails me saying, I think we need to change how we prep, the two guys next to me are complaining about the overpowering scent of onions. I'm all, screw them, it smells good! And then another guy later on says that Mark smells like spaghetti :D

I sure hope it's tasty. It's the first time we've ever made this recipe.

Time to refocus

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

Alright, it's time to buckle down. I've been a little slack lately. Once I hit maintenance and then started adding quite a bit more strength training, Spark really bumped up my calorie range and I let it be an excuse to eat some not so good stuff (it's not food if it's made mostly from chemicals, eep). Anyway, my weight hasn't really got up but I took measurements last night and my waist and my hips and my thighs all went up. Not by very much but I definitely need to take it as a warning sign.

So I reduced my calorie range on Spark so that I think a little bit more about what I'm eating. And I'm starting a Spark Streak to NOT eat any of the cinnamon hearts and chocolate that's hanging around the office. And to say YES to the walks at break time but NO to the buying something at Tim Horton's (which is where we walk to).

Time to regroup and refocus. I've got some weddings to attend in fall and I need to keep them in mind as my goals.

Another goal I would like to state is to bring out my roller blades this spring. I bought them two years ago from a garage sale and tried them maybe three or four times and then they sat in the trunk of my car (because I might be out for a drive and suddenly want to skate. yeah right) for the next year and they've been in the basement gathering dust ever since. But I really think that I should take them out in spring.

Can you talk more about how you're dealing with this "warning signs"? And maybe about the things that trigger you to stray from your diet goals? I'm struggling myself - and I'd love any advice you have to share. Thanks!
