How ya doin'?

Thursday, May 02, 2013

I received a Sparkgoodie from one of my Sparkfriends earlier in the week wondering how I have been doing.

So, to update any who might be wondering...

August 2012 - stomach issues landed me with a colonoscopy...came back clear, though I am now on the 5 year program.
Fall 2012 - Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a lumpectomy, then a mastectomy. She is on a pill treatment that lasts....the next 5 years...I think. She is doing well with that. She is also in therapy, and finally dealing with the grief from my dad's death a few years back.
January 2013 - Back to the doctor, stomach still not feeling well...gall bladder, it turns out! I had it removed in February, and then came down with a lovely case of C. diff. After a 3 week antibiotic course, that is much better.
Late February 2013 - my bum ticker ended me up in the ER, though my symptoms disappeared before they could get me on the EKG. My cardiologist put me on a one month monitor, which recorded some PVC's (early heartbeats, which we knew I had), and SupraVentricular Tachycardia....that is most likely what I was feeling when in the ER. Now I will be seeing a Cardiac Electrophysiologist. While in the ER, the X-Ray showed...something?? They wanted me to check back with my doc in 3 months, but he and I decided to check again in a month. My follow up X-Ray was Monday, waiting on results.
April 2013 - My mom has been scheduled to have her gall bladder removed in May.

So, the struggles continue. I'm not crazy about my late 30s right now, and have been dealing with anxiety and depression to boot. I feel like I'm in a stall, just waiting to see what the docs will determine.

I have been thinking of you and little Mira (and your mom too) a lot these past few months. I'm SOOOOO sorry to hear that you have been going through all these struggles. I certainly can empathize, as I have had a lot of my own (with the HOCM).

You are young and beautiful and, I am sure, with wonderful medical help, you will be back to your old self in due time.

Hang in there! It will start to look up, I'm sure. emoticon

Mira is doing ok -- though we are in potty training mode. That is making me want to pull my hair out! LOL

If there is an upside to all of this it would be that going through all of these things now means that maybe your 40's will be a breeze!

I hope you and your Dr. get your issues worked out so that you can at least feel normal and not have to worry so much about your health.

Unfortunately, until I can get my heart issue straightened out, cardio is out of the question, and I have to be careful about my strength training, too. It's frustrating and depressing!

You've certainly had your challenges these past months. When life's challenges fall our way it's so easy to be side tracked and fall off the wagon. Hope your finding some strength to be able to continue to work on your healthy life style. You are worth it. The steps don't have to be huge but each one counts. Do it for yourself.

On Hiatus

Monday, November 12, 2012

I just wanted to give my friends and teammates from SP a little heads-up on life for me right now. I already notified my team leaders, but I hate to disappear without saying a little something.

First of all, I have been sick. I've had a bug that has held on for 4+ weeks, a first for me. My ENT said it was a virus, and I should drink lots of fluids and stop talking. 3 weeks later, still sick. So, I went to the Minute Clinic. The Nurse Practitioner didn't see any signs of infection, but felt sorry for my and gave me a round of antibiotics, plus recommended that I take some allergy pills - doing both, hoping for recovery. In light of all the sickness, my fitness routine has disappeared. I just can't workout if I can't breathe.

But, that, unfortunately, is not all for me.

My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in October. She had a lumpectomy on Halloween, which was to be followed with radiation and possibly some chemo. The results from the lumpectomy showed multiple microscopic tumors throughout the breast, something none of us expected, even her doctor. So, she has to have a mastectomy the week after Thanksgiving. This is to be followed with chemo and radiation. Her health isn't the best to begin with, so I am quite concerned for her. I am grateful that, considering the small size of the tumors, she was able to detect anything through self examination.

So, I am just not with it. Between being sick and run down, and concern over my mom's health, I just don't have the energy to throw into SP right now. I will still be lurking, so you may see me around.

As I said, I have notified team leaders so they know what is going on, and I have left a few teams. I have gone into 'Sick Bay' on my BLC team, but will faithfully weigh in every Wednesday. Other than that, I will do what I can, when I can. In the meantime, I will attempt to make lemonade out of this big truckload of lemons life just served me.

I would so appreciate prayers for my mom. Feel free to keep in touch, I will get back to you all as I can.

BLC 20 Re-Boot

Monday, October 22, 2012

Ok, so I haven't been as successful in BLC 20. My goal is to lose 20 pounds by 12/5. 6 weeks in and I'm less than 5 pounds down. To be honest, my weight has stayed in the same 5 pound range for 2 months. So how about the rest of my goals?

1) Size 16 - in a 18/20 right now.
2) Less than 50 inch hips - met 10/13/12.
3) Less than 14 inch arms - currently at 14 and 14.25
4) Less than 37 inch chest - currently 38.
5) Less than 38 inch waist - currently 38.5.
6) Less than 25 inch thighs - currently 26.25 and 26.
7) Less than 16 inch calves - currently 16.5.
8) Work out at least 4 days a week - I'm averaging about 5 days.
9) Drink at least 4 glasses of water a day - not there yet.
10) 5 real pushups - I can do 20 three steps up on the stairs.
12) 20 second plank - met 9/24/12.

I am very close on my measurements, and think I will meet those goals. I'm pretty happy with my workouts, and have increased the time from 30 to 45 minutes on average. I really need to work on my water. I think I will have to be happy withb1 real pushup. I am getting stronger, and decreasing my angle on the stsirs, but I don't know that I'll be ready for 5. On the other hand, since I blasted through my 20 second plank goal, I think I can go for 40 seconds!!!

Some good, some bad. But progress is being made. My thighs have each gone up a quarter inch, so I have been trying o work my legs harder. I don't know if I'll meet my weight goal, but I'll keep trying!!!!

Good chance your thighs are growing in muscle mass and not fat! I bet you can get that 1 full push up in soon and conquer 5! You are almost there with a 20 second plank! Keep progressing! You are doing great!

The BLC is proving to be a great challenge in terms of keeping us going. I know that by the end of it we will come out stronger. It's a lot harder than I thought, but thus the word "Challenge." Keep pushing and you will reach your goals!

i think you are doing great susan love.not to forget you may not be losing as much weight as you would like you are looseing inches which means you are builing up muscle which are dense that fat so will also slow down your weight loss.re the water if you leave a bottle by your bedside all the time and have a glass in the morning when you wake up and a glas at night that is already 2 glasses then have a glass with every meal and snack depending on how many meals and snacks you should meet your 4 glasses goal easy.hope this helps i think you are doing great love.keep up the good work and donīt forget to smile.

Happy Sparkaversary To Me!

Saturday, September 29, 2012

No, not the Sparkaversary that everyone else celebrates on SP. No offense, but this one is so much more important to me. 2 years ago today, my team of doctors insured that Mira and I would live, meet each other and have the strongest bond I can imagine 2 people can have.

On 9/27/10, I woke up with my heart racing and struggling to catch my breath after just a short walk. My nurse practioner directed me to my cardiologist, who, thankfully, got me in. As expected, they kept me. My heart had gone into a-fib and was beating over 200 bpm. I was put into Cardiac ICU. Their nurses stared at my monitor in awe. You know things aren't right when those nurses are shocked at your condition! They tried throughout the 27th and into the 28th to fix my heart with medication. Finally, they told me that they would have to cardiovert (shock) me, and it was scheduled for 9/29.

Did I mention I was 7 months pregnant at the time?

After 20 hours without food (never starve a pregnant woman!), they took me to a delivery room. They were concerned that shocking me might alter Mira's heartbeat (which, miraculously, was fine). If she went into a-fib, they would have to deliver her (c-section), and shock her again! First came the camera that I had to swallow to look for possible clots...then nighty-night! They put me to sleep, and I woke up.... still pregnant and with a normal heartbeat!

The 6 weeks that followed involved twice daily injections of blood thinners, but I made it through, and so did Mira. Less than 2 months later, on November 24th, my little doll came into the world...healthy, beautiful and amazing.

So Happy Sparkaversy Mira! I'm sure someone had a nice paper in a medical journal about us, but I don't care. We have shared the most amazing experience, and before you were even born!

BLC Weekend Assignment - Pics & Plans

Sunday, September 16, 2012

From the front :

From the side:

And the dreaded back shot (oh the horror!):

I recently posted my 12 week goal for the challenge. In addition to losing 20 pounds, I intend to lose inches all over, drop a size, increase my water intake, as well as get to a point where I can do 5 real pushups and a 20 second plank.

OK, it's all well and good to set goals, but I need a definite plan to make it happen!

Nutrition:
Breakfast: Eat a fiber-filled breakfast daily. The fiber helps me stay full longer.

Lunch:
Monday-Friday: Have a well balanced & portion controlled lunch 4/5 days. One day a week I will have lunch out, usually at Subway, again, portion controlled.
Saturday/Sunday: Fix a portion controlled lunch.

Dinner:
Hubby and I take turns making dinner. I go for healthier options, and he is trying to lean that way too. We are enjoying more veggies at dinner, and fewer desserts. Like lunch, I am practicing portion control.

Snacks:
Monday-Friday: I pack fruit or veggies for snacks, planning on 2 per day.
Saturday/Sunday: No mindless snacking, I count and measure all.

Occasionally, hubby is home late or not at all, and I have to wing it for dinner. Those days I make dinner for Mira and enjoy a protein shake myself.

As for my water, after my 16 oz each of milk and coffee, I drink lots of water. Sometimes I have a diet coke and an even rarer light beer, but usually it will be water.

Fitness:
Monday-Friday: minimum of 30 minutes fitness at night. Stationary bike, Sp video then back on the bike to make my full 30 minutes. Tuesday and Thursday will have ST.
Saturday: Yoga class, treadmill then Big Changes class totalling between 2-2.5 hours fitness.
Sunday: same as weekdays, but in the morning.

I hope to do 1 mile walks on Saturday and Sunday with my family as well.

Each day I get fitness in at home, I will be practicing my pushups and plank.

My goal is a minimum of 4 days of fitness per week.

There you have it! 12 weeks to awesome!
