My First Bodybuilding Competition ...9 weeks out ...Aug 8, 2012

Saturday, August 11, 2012

I have crossed off some other firsts also.

On that list include zip-lining and snowboarding. Total endorphin rushes. Okay, so I pretty much went down the hill (snowboarding)on my butt, BUT I was laughing the whole way. So were my girlfriends, btw. It was a total blast. ...and zip-lining? If you have never done it, DO IT!!! (she said with love) ...this all done in the last two years. I turned 41 and realized their are a ton of things I have not done!! I am the happiest I have ever been and my life is almost half over!!! I need to do stuff!!!! Next, surf. Oh wait...

So I was at my gym (apx) 25 weeks ago and a personal trainer Lady (def knew of her, but never really talked to her... not a talker at the gym...outside the gym you can't shut me up...that's your warning) we will call her PTLJenn, she came up to me and said, "you could've won this year's bodybuilding competition at so-and-so."

ummm, "what?" (that was my reply)

"Symmetry", she said. "You have great symmetry"

again..."ummmm what?"

I'm not sounding very intellectual at this point, I realize. I was mostly humbled and honored that she would make such a crazy accusation. Fine, I admit hearing the word symmetry has never really been used to flatter me before either. Was she hitting on me? Oh Dear, I have turned into a man ... maybe I should do more cardio. That's where this all started. ...and she is a man.

I was told by her and others that have been in competitions to blog about the journey and I wish I would've listened sooner because their are many things I wish I would have in writing (I find fonts, spreadsheets & clip art completely titillating but not to share about myself), for instance, these veins that are popping all over my body. ...wt???? I always thought women complained about the road maps on their legs? OMGawsh they are so cool!!! 'Oley smokers they are poppin' all over my abs and my arms and who knew!!!

Before I go on about how kewl it is to watch my body transform into some really cool Alien~esque~She~man I need to be honest...please don't hate...

I always thought women bodybuilders were...well...a lil...ummm...too (being nicey~ness) manly *ducking to miss flying objects. BUT I have a totally new perspective. I have never felt more feminine or strong at the same time. I can totally hang with the BigZ on the bench press and throwing those weights around makes me feel sho shexy. Those chics are hawt and I have total respect for their sickness. Now that I've cleared the air. Total respect, got it.

I have always been disciplined with exercise. I got hooked on the cardio when I saw a Turbo Jam info and have since been Turbo certified and been in the Fire infomercial for the wonderful changes that it paved for me leading the way to this next level of fitness. When PTLJenn told me to do less cardio and more strength I was like, "but...but...really?...less Turbo?...but..." yeah, listen to your PT's they are smart lil houligans. I have lost 15lbs 7 weeks. (*side note: I am losing weight in the strangest places. ...a little lower. ...not that low...) Although, I have kicked up my strength and spending about 2 1/2 hours a day at the gym (and for all you who say you can get it done in less...more power to you...I love the gym and if I CAN stay there and kick my ash, I will) my food intake is where I really struggle. I used to lead a weight management class. Nope, not even close to what this diet consists of. A whole different world.

I know I am not much different than most (except for PTLJenn it seems!!!!) with the food addiction. Reeeeeeaaallly reeeeeaaaalllly hard for me. It seemed the first 15lbs were easy compared to now!!! I am sooooo sick of chicken. Until of course, I start eating it, then I become entirely grateful for it. I miss my cake. I want cake. I thought with out having it for so many weeks I would not WANT CAKE. ...but I do. I just want cake. At this point I would even take a flavor other than chocolate. Oh and my Froyo with Smuckers Natural and Dark Chocolate Chips mixed perfectly with the right amounts left in the last spoonful...

see what I mean.

Another reason it is good to blog during your journey is if you start later the blog gets very lengthy and your readers will soon tire of the obvious.

So this is where I will free you and sincerely thank you for taking the time to read this.

I will close by saying I have NEVER felt this healthy, alive, determined, energized, strong, lovely, pretty, kickashish, never before been complimented more by total strangers about my arms, shoulders, legs, butt, abs etc (hate to admit how motivating that is) ...this is the shizzzz and I will annoyingly recommend it to all who are interested in feeling all the good.

I don't know??!! ...but I need someTHING!

Friday, June 04, 2010

Darnit...I am just not in the mood. I used to love exercise. I was the one who always said to others, "oh, the hardest part is getting out of bed!" or "remember that feeling of all those happy little endorphins running through your veins after you are all done!"...what's the deal-eeo!!!

I haven't seen the scale budge in months. Holding at 157. I don't want to be at 157. 157 is overweight with my all of 5'4" tall (short)-ness.

I am sick of TurboJam (their I said it)... (oh do I hate seeing that in writing)... I love Turbo. I am looking forward to TurboFIRE coming out and I am so tired of waiting. It is supposed to be out this month (June). I am hoping that will "FIRE" me up again.

I am just in a slump. I would like to take off exercising (don't get me wrong, it is not like I sit all day...I have 3 kids, a house, a (huge) garden, and flowerbeds up-the-arse to keep me busy, walks w/ Macy'rie, but as far as my am workout I am burnt-out. I AM eating less. So that's good. I get so darn hungry when I work out. Stupid balance.

Okay, I have tried this before (the easing up on my am workout thingy) and couldn't do it a whole week, so I am hoping and praying that, that anxious energy overcomes me again this time.

    1. You look AMAZING- cut out the bashing on Jess!
Or I'll come after you (Uh oh)! ;)
2. Change up your workouts (I know it's hard with the infom. and all...but I can guarantee all of those TJ ladies are not JUST doing TJ!) Run some days, do TJ the next, swim another, circuit train the next. It's all about variation. No matter how hard the workout is the body gets tired of the same kind over and over again and it will stop showing as much change!
3. *Calorie cycling*-
4. SMILE your beautiful!!

I gave your "problem" some extra focus and did a little research, too :-)
Consider reading and applying:

Plateau Busters 1-2-3

In plain English
1. Eat the Right Nutrients at the Right Times
2. Include Adequate Rest in Your Exercise Program
3. Add Variety to Your Workouts

Do It, we ALL know you can !!

    Dear Jess,
First thing. I totally agree with DACIUS.
More specifically, I think that the scale stubbornly refusing to move to the right direction might perfectly mean that you are transforming fat into muscle, thing rather logical taking into account how consistently you workout. You know ordinary scales measure total body weight, not body composition. So either opt for an appropriate scale or go for a medical fat percentage evaluation.
It might also be water retention, due to warming weather...
I wonder… You are feeling tired, is it possible you are over exerting yourself? Do you sleep well and rest enough?

When all things seem to go wrong, it is mainly because we chose to focus on some hectic trees and essentially lose the all-green, vibrant forest.
I ditto DACIUS in that I do not believe you are as overweight, I think you are strong and dense [and beautiful! irrelevant, but so true a statement].

To conclude.
Cool things a lil'bit, keep your spirits as UP as you can for now, forge your reactions and maintain a steady, slightly slower tempo.

"Keep Doing It", to be your present motto, and 'not to retreat to past unproductive yo-yo behaviors', your main goal!

If you are overweight then whoever made the scales are sadly mistaken. You are a beautiful woman, you are fit, you are strong. Don't let that three digit number dominate your mood. There are sooo many other things that you can take into consideration. Maybe go get yourself a body/fat caliper test done. That will give you a clear picture of your lean mass compared to fat %. I'll wager those numbers will tell a completely different story than the scale number based on some out dated graph says.

I am 6'4" and they say I need to lose another 50 pounds to be at my ideal weight. Btw...that would be only 13 pounds higher than where you are at.

Regarding the long have you been in this slump? We all go through them. Lord knows I have. Stick to maintaining right now if you are in a slump. You will get out of it and you will be back in full swing.

    Hey you,

I do understand. I went through that exact same slump just two weeks ago, but I have not had your success, or obviously not your consistency.

My motivation came from chatting it up with my SparkPeeps. Yes, y'all got me going. In addition, I will not be the fat American cruisin' around the museums in Paris. Jess, I have less than 90 days and I am giving it all I got.

I would love it if you would join me in this push. TELL ME WHAT TO DO PLEASE!!

..or at the very least, give me suggestions. Despite feeling off today - I actually left work sick.. I'm fired up. My goal is a couple pounds per week, which is doable.

I guess what I am saying is that having a goal and a date makes a difference for me.

So, do you have a goal, let's say 149 lbs by 9/1?

Lemme' know.

Spark Baby!

Another idea, assuming that over-cardio is not what is going on - if you have never tried interval running, you might want to give it a whirl, pretty much the definition of body shock.

Try something new a few days a week, for a few weeks...maybe Pilates or Yoga. Or, take the cardio elements out of your strength training as much as possible those few days, by keeping your rep range under 8 with a weight that makes that last rep difficult. Sounds like your body is becoming accustomed to all the cardio - hence no endorphin rush. Switch it up for awhile and I bet the endos' come back after turbo again. Don't be freaked out if the scale moves in the wrong direction a little..all other variables being equal - that is going to be muscle

Maybe change up your workout a bit? Sometimes when it's new and different, it becomes something we "want" to do, rather then something we feel we "need" to do.

Good luck and keep going. Once the scale gets "unstuck" it will move again for you. The secret (which is not really a secret at all) is to NOT GIVE UP!

Have a great week and weekend!
