Quick question for all you Moms on diaper bags....

Friday, January 22, 2010

I am searching for a good diaper bag. Any suggestions of a good brand that includes lots of pockets, places for bottles, a changing pad, etc.....

I do not need anything fancy just functional, well and cute, of course!

Thanks a TON! emoticon

It's been awhile, but I love, love, loved my backpack style diaper bag. I used it with both my babies and it was perfect. Not too big, but still carried everything I needed. You'll find the right one that works for you- trial and error mostly!

Not because she's my mother-in-law, but I totally have to send you to her website! I LOVE the bags she's made for me and all of my friends. They are custom made, so you can personalize as you wish! And the prices are affordable. Oh, and all of her work is guaranteed! I hope you like them! Here's her web:

Let me know what you think!

I had a messenger-style bag that was technically a "DJ" bag- sized just right for a stack of LP records, which just so happen to be about the same size as a stack of prefolds.
It also had a small area up front that was great for any other personal items that didn't happen to fit in my pockets. You definitely don't want to carry a purse *and* a diaper bag!

It's kind of off topic, and I know they're not everyone's style, but I also loved carrying a chain wallet. (The one I have now is more girly than my last one, with a daintier chain.) I never had to dig in a bag when I was paying for something, I didn't have to carry my bag into the store with me+babe if I was just running in for one thing, and if my wallet fell out of my pocket while I was bending over (which happened a lot!!), I didn't lose it. As long as I had my pants on, I had my ID and debit card with me. :)

I always drooled over the lands end options.. but I didn't get one ... Having seen my girlfriends get one to start with, and never need another, when I was using, and tossing so many... it was insane!!! (plus the warrantee you get with Lands End is AMAZING!) Look it up...

Only general comment.. make sure you spend a bit more upfront and get a nice one, and one of good quality.. so you don't end up getting a new one frequently. You end up paying so much more!!! Things I looked for: Nice fabric on the outside, waterproof inside section, lots of 'cubbies' to organize my stuff in. (big open space just ended up being jumbled, and I couldn't find anything) and a plain outside, so daddy would carry it too. (usually he left it at home, or in the car, and didn't have what he needed and was using choice words while I was trying not to laugh.....)

Have fun.

Messenger bag style worked best for me, a lot easier to find things than the Back pack style my husband used. Petunia Pickle and Skip Hop had the cutest bags when I bought (f course I had boys)

My favorite diaper bag was also not actually a diaper bag. Just a messenger bag that I bought a separate changing pad from (actually I just used a pad out of a different bag) I used that bag til it died. My suggestion is to not just look in the diaper bag selection - you may be much happier with something from Target.

I used a messenger is Timbuk2 brand (I still use it for a carry on) and it worked so well!! I never could find a diaper bag that worked the way it was supposed to for me! But the messenger bags have tons of pockets and it had a seperate plastic lined pocket that I could slip my wallet in and know that it was protected from spills. Plus the messenger bag was one my hubby was willing to carry to the bathroom when we were out...the "purse style ones" he wouldn't be caught dead with! LOL:)

We have two bags from Skip Hop ( that have held up fantastically over the past four years. One is smaller for quick trips to the grocery store, gym, etc. The other we used a lot on longer trips. Their bags are stylish, functional, and really well made. I am not a huge fan of backpacks, so I really like having a messenger style bag to carry. The other thing I love is that they don't look like traditional diaper bags, so I have been able carry them for years. When Trent was a baby, they carried all his baby goods and now that he is older, we keep water bottles, extra clothes, coloring books, and toys in the bag.

I hope you find the right bag(s) for you!!!

I'm with MARABURK, go with the backpack style. I have an Eddie Bauer backpack diaper bag and love it. I got it at Target. My oldest is 5 and youngest 2 1/2 and I still use it all the time. ONESTEPAHEAD.COM has a really cool one I wanted but never could get. As active as you are, backpack would be the way to in my opinion. SINGER73 suggested a big and small bag and I agree. I do have a small backpack that holds plenty for trips out of the house that I bought from REI. It even has some girly scrolling on it to make it feminine. I also use the small one when I hike. LOVE IT!

I can't give you a recommendation but make sure you get a big and small diaper bag. Also make sure that there is room in there for your wallet and other personal things. It's really hard to carry a pocketbook(purse) and a diaper bag and a baby.

I got two from Land's End. I love their Little Tripper, but used the Do-It-All on longer road/plane trips. The Little Tripper is the perfect size and has two side pockets for bottles and back pocket for the changing pad. It also has a front pouch with lots of pockets and key chain. The light blue inside is awesome. I can find anything... toys, etc.

They have a backpack now, but it was not available when I was shopping.

Skip a diaper bag and go with a backpack - one you can throw in the washing machine and (most importantly) one your husband is willing to carry:) I must admit I have a second - a large satchel for when I attend professional events.

I found a fun one at TJ Maxx that I actually used for school- I wish I had that one when I first had my baby! Instead I got a JJ Cole- which I really liked but it ripped a seam across the front. Which stunk because I didnt use it as much as I thought I would've. I also bought a changing pad that looks like a clutch purse from Target and I use that still and my daughter is 2! I think it was a spark hop? Its something like that.

The best one I ever had and was cross functional was from LL Bean. But honestly...with 4 kids (my youngest now 5)...I just needed the changing pad and the rest did not matter. A simple canvas bag would do. Even the free one that you get at the hospital. And if you go with need to make ahead. Put the powder in the bottle and add warm tap water. Instant bottle and no need for keeping it cold and no need to warm the bottle!

if you look around at some discount stores (tj maxx and marshalls for example) you can find some really cute ones for a lot cheaper. i just bought a cole haan bag for less than 1/3 of what it would have cost new and it has everything!

Really, it depends on how long you will be out. I usually carried a change of clothes in the car, and took a bottle, diaper, and paci in a smaller bag into stores with me. You REALLY normally don't need a lot of stuff with you...

BUT again, thats all part of the swing of things that you'll figure out for yourselves....

I'm going to agree with everyone else... I had a nice diaper bag, and I don't think I've used it at all since the first week we brought our daughter home. We switched to a back pack. They hold more, and are so much easier to carry around. There are some really cute styles out there, but we just used the one I had left over from college. We still use it whenever we're going anywhere for more than a few hours.

The one we're using is from Wal-Mart - a pocket on each side for bottles, a side pocket for...whatever, and it came with a little changing pad. But it is DEFINITELY and OBVIOUSLY a diaper bag...there's no using this thing for any other reason.

With my first I used a regular diaper bag, but it was destroyed by number 2. I went with a backpack for number 2, usually lots of pockets/places for cups/bottles/etc., and you can keep your hands free when carrying the baby.

(Still use it, btw...for keeping extra wipes/snacks/panties/clothes handy) emoticon

A friend of mine has a Baby Sac, it's really nice, pockets for bottles and came with a changing pad (pocket in back for that too), and has plenty of room inside. I like that it isn't a "theme" type diaper bag, I would've wanted one when I had my kids if I'd known about them then. :)

I can't speak to the Lands' End bags, but I know they make good quality bags in general. :)

Good luck on your choice, it will be like your purse for awhile!

Yesterday I officially made it to 29 weeks! Each week I receive emails from all the baby sites I am apart of. On one site they had a slideshow that showed you a picture of the approximate size of your baby for each week.

This was the picture for week 29!

Here is the full slideshow link for those who want to check it out....

Isn't my little girl the cutest ever! Love her so much. She is moving around more each day but in different ways. She kicks and so on the same as before only stronger but now I am watching her move far more frequently. I was in a children's store yesterday shopping and the sales associate was working with me on some items and I could feel her moving all around so much, I think she was really liking what I was picking out! LOL Looks like she has great taste already! emoticon

On the fitness front, well it has been NONEXISTENT this week. Sorry, but that is the cold, hard truth. I have been busy running around getting so much done, so the activity is there but no actual workouts this week, just a couple of walks. My eating has been going well but yesterday I was starving. I feel like I am really getting hungry around mid morning and late in the afternoon, even after eating. I am trying to drink more water but I swear it feels like I am just SO hungry. I am looking forward today getting out for a walk and this weekend getting back on track with my miles.Since this weekend will be a busy one I am setting my plan for next week ahead of time.....

Friday - 2 mile walk
Saturday - 3 mile walk
Sunday - 3 mile walk
Monday - 5 mile bike ride at gym with 3 mile walk
Tuesday - 5 mile bike ride at gym with a 3 mile walk
Wednesday - Rest
Thursday - 3 mile walk
Friday - 3 mile walk
Saturday - 3 mile walk
Sunday - Rest

Weekend report, nursery update and goals for today!

Monday, January 18, 2010

What a fabulous weekend we had! We started off the weekend with our first baby class at the hospital. The class we took was called Infant care and we learned SO much! I was so impressed with my husband and I have to say proudly that he was the better than me at swaddling! LOL He was so involved and interested in the class, just another thing I love about this amazing man. After our class we went to another baby store to look at all the strollers and we may be changing our minds as to what stroller we will be getting. It is SO hard. There are a million different choices. We got our car seat already and are debating with sticking with the same brand with the stroller or combining it with another system. I am heading back today to take a look at some of the 2010 models and I hope we can make a decision soon.

We did buy our play yard which is SO cute! Then we bought a large floor lamp for her room along with a bookcase and big soft chair for the corner so we can rock her to sleep or read to her. We decided to take back our bedding as the creams were just not working right with the room. We are using quite a bit of bright whites and the other cream just did not look right. Here is a fun quick look at some of the stuff we have bought so far! Hope you do not mind me sharing but it is just so much FUN!!!

This is the crib we bought and the wall color we used.

Here is our changing table

Pack and cute for a little girl!

Here is our car seat. We love it because the inside is a soft leather. This is the stroller that goes along with it and has the same leather inside, but we are debating on this one and another coming out for 2010...will decide today!

Here is the chair we bought for the corner of her room.

Ok, I will stop now! LOL! I could talk about all of this forever! We are going to take a picture of her room when it is all done, I cannot wait to see it completely finished!

Tomorrow is my husband's birthday so I have a busy day getting some things done is preparation for tomorrow. I hope to make is a very special day for my sweetie!

My goals for this week -

Monday - Walk 3 miles
Tuesday - Walk 4 miles
Wednesday - Bike 5 miles and Walk 2 miles
Thursday - Walk 4 miles
Friday - Bike 5 miles and Walk 2 miles
Saturday - Walk 3 miles

Blessings to everyone! Hope your week is the best and you reach all your goals!!!

I LOVE IT!! The changing table looks like it may have a high back...if it does, that's fabulous. I had a high back on DD's table and when she started rolling, I just flipped it around (backwards away from the wall). This gave her extra coverage from rolling right off of the table. It's funny, because I used it until she was over two!! :)
I love PB! I got DD an anywhere chair w/her name on's been great to take progress pictures of her (used to be monthly) to watch her grow.
Looks like you have an exciting day...Happy birthday DH!

PS - swaddling is magic for them and the blankets work fabulously! Happiest Baby on the the video from the library and watch it. The second month was ROUGH until we watched this and she was a completely different baby!

Beautiful! Love the wall color, so pretty! My hubby was wayyyy better at swaddling as well! In fact it was his job the first month or so with both our boys! He was also better at the car seats..I just couldn't get them in there right and was so afraid of pinching their little tummies. Hubbys are just better at some of these things :) Have a wonderful day with your growing little girl.

I saw that stroller and you talking about the soft leather and I was thinking - Oh, the clean up job on that thing! LOL. But then I forget how completely so-so you are :) No smelly milk will be on your baby girls leather! LOL. I bet her changing table will look exactly like that photo at all times, everything stacked so perfectly. LOL. My kids would love for you to be their mom! :)

have to tell you that you have inspired me to walking more: did 4 miles today instead of the usual 3. Thank you!!! And, as of Saturday weighin, put on just .4 lbs this past week!! that's a total of 17.4 for the pregnancy!!! WOO-HOO!!!

They also did the little book poem instead of card at our daughters baby shower. Everyone loved the idea and we are reading those books to our little guy. The girls signed their book with a little note(Congrats, ideas, love,Suggestions) in the front of the book.

I am enjoying your excitement with the coming of your first child, such a happy time for the two of you. I am a grandma for the first time as my grandson was born in Aug 2009. For my daughters shower we sent out this poem with the shower invitations and she got such nice books to read to her son.

"Although cards are nice,
They're only read once or twice.
A book is a treasure
That lasts forever.
So instead of a card to be put aside,
Please give the baby a book with your name & wishes inside.
It will be read to our little tyke
Before bed each night,
And we will think of you
Forever and ever!"

Just wanted to pass it along. I know you will have some very special times reading to your daughter in that beautiful chair you bought! Thank you for your inspirational sparks page!!!

That is one of the true advantages of knowing if your having a boy or a girl you can really customize the room for her. I love all your choices you have made. Its amazing how large of a selections there is for strollers and car seats. You think you have one narrowed down and then you see another one that you think might be better. Looks like you have everything under control.

Oh, how I miss those days!! I still love walking thru the baby stuff and looking at all the new stuff they've come out with. My kids are 7 and 3 and the baby stuff gets cuter and cuter by the minute!!

When we got our car seats, my hubby was very selective. He wanted to make sure the padding was good and it would be something he'd want to sit in, since the baby would be spending so much time there.

Love the colors and accessories for the nursery.

The colors are so calming--- like out of story book! WOW is all that comes to mind... let's just say my kid had a hand me down crib that we had to glue together and the sides were all chewed upon, but we got it for free from out neighbors and at the time, we were so blessed, as we had like no money. If I do ever have another child, I think I will have to splurge on a crib, however. The 2 other things that I felt were the best things ever was his swing... they make one now that even plays music.. my little baby niece has it and it's fabulous. Also, after my SIL had her little baby ( she's 3 months now) she did opt to buy a real rocking chair. I am not a big fan of them once they get bigger, as they try to climb on them and might get hurt, a simple one might be really, really useful! Even a rocking recliner or somehing....I'm telling you I had a rocking chair and I used it all the time when Danny was a baby!

I'm so excited that your hubby is so into these classes-- it must feel so heartwarming!!!

Enjoy this week- glad you're feeling good.

3rd Trimester Appointment report! 7 months pregnant today!

Thursday, January 14, 2010

I cannot believe I am writing this blog! I just seems like yesterday that I just announced I was pregnant and now I am officially in the 3rd trimester!

Our appointment was wonderful. I came to my doctor with a long list of concerns as my cramping and pains having increased quite a bit. He was so understanding and explained to my husband and I what was going on. He said the back pain was due to a spasm and pain from the weight of the baby and there was no need to be too concerned about it. The pain in my belly that I like to describe as the accordion pain because it feels like my stomach is clinching down like an accordion is nothing more than Braxton Hicks contractions, again totally normal, no worries there. This we expected and knew already but it was good to hear. The sharp pains that are low he said are my pelvic bones getting ready and spreading, again totally normal. He said these can be quite painful so I am fine. He said it was good for me to keep walking as it is so wonderful me. Ok, maybe not my 30 miles a week I was doing but a good 3 or 4 mile walk a day is fine for me. I just need to watch my HR and keep it steady and low. We are just so grateful that everything is ok and our little girl was fine! Her heart beat was steady at 152 and STRONG! So blessed to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy little girl getting ready to come and meet us! I feel MUCH better after talking with him about our concerns and know now what I need to do. Exercise moderately and rest when the pain gets to be too much.

I am showing a gain of 14 pounds, that is slightly lower than when I weighed in this morning when I first got up and my home scale was showing 16 pounds. Whether it is 14 or 16, I am doing well, although I like the 14 number better! LOL!! It felt good to know that I have worked hard to stay on track and it is paying off. With a one pound a week from here on out would still put me at an overall gain of 24 - 26 pounds, well within my range of 25 - 35 pounds. Most important, I just want my little girl to be healthy. I did think my weight was going to be higher because I felt so distended as of late. It is probably all the water and fiber I have been eating making me feel bigger than I am! LOL

After the appointment my husband and I went to celebrate my entry into the 3rd Trimester! We went to eat at our favorite Thai restaurant....YUMMY! I was happy to see that our little girl liked the spicy food I was eating as a few minutes after eating she started moving around like yesterday. We are introducing her to her culture! She is part Thai so we have to start early getting her ready for those trips to Thailand to see her family and all that spicy food! It was GOOD and I loved treating myself to it! It was worth every single calorie! Now, I am going for a walk later to burn some of it off but it was a wonderful, relaxing lunch and more importantly it was fun celebrating this special day. 28 weeks along today and so grateful!! My next appointment is January 28th. From now until 36 weeks I will be going to the doctor every 2 weeks for a full checkup.

We are going to post a 28 week picture tomorrow! I am now off to enjoy my day and go shopping for my little girl. I want to buy her something for her 3rd trimester!!

I'm so glad to hear that you are going to continue to walk, you are doing soooo well! I am so proud of you for keeping within your weight range - even on the lower end, which is fabulous!

Did I tell you I LOVE thai food? Its my absolute favorite! send me some recipes if you have any good ones - the spicier the better :)

I am so excited, I am crying! I am watching my baby moving around...

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

I am so sorry for another baby post but this is such a big part of my life right now. I have to tell you guys what is happening right this very second! I am watching my little girl move around like never before. I just watched my belly button move around and then I literally could see her on one side of my belly and then moving to the other side! It is incredible. I just called my husband and told him and it is breaking his heart that he cannot be here for this.

I am amazed at how active she is once again for only 7 months! I am sitting here crying so hard because I am watching a miracle inside of me that I never thought would happen. I have a LIFE inside of me! It is really hitting home that this is my little girl moving around. I am going to be a Mom! I cannot tell you what a precious memory this is for me right now.

I am going to charge my video camera so I can take a video of this, I want to treasure this always. I am just overwhelmed with emotion right now in the best possible way....

Thank you for giving me a chance to share these moments with you. Can you tell I am an excited first time Mom! LOL

Aww, your so not alone in that... Not too long ago I was sitting in my computer chair and had my shirt up above my belly so that I could watch my belly move and I literally saw her arm or something move acrossed my belly and I was like... SO over comed with emotion I started to cry. Just the thought that there's this little person swimming around inside of me is truly amazing and overwhelming it truly is a miracle and something that no one can explain to anyone else unless they've experienced it themselves. It's a beautiful thing.

Absolutely amazing!! But don't ever feel like you need to apologize for savoring this time - you SHOULD be enjoying and writing/recording/remembering every moment of your first pregnancy. It's got to be such a magical, emotional time for you!!

It is so fun watching our bellies move when the baby moves. It never happened at all with my daughter -- she was a kicker but not a mover. However, my son was constantly rolling and moving about. My stomach was always going this way & that. I shudder to think of how active he's going to be once he starts crawling and walking -- yikes!

Have fun & enjoy these wonderful baby moments. You have a lot more of them to come.

Yes, don't apologize for a baby post. I remember each on of my pregnancies. Each as amazing as the last. The baby moving and the heart beating, and everything else is so precious. In fact, even when that baby arrives you'll find more and more posts will be about how she did this, or that. You'll even have rude people that will tell you that you talk about your kids too much. But ignore them. don't feel bad about enjoying your life and your children like we were meant to do. I absolutely loved reading this. Keep posting :D Happy things and enjoying them are also part of a healthy lifestyle :D

It is exciting, isn't it! You already ARE a mom - as much of one as you'll ever be. It's like being pregnant, you can't be a little bit. It never ends, I'll tell you children are like seeing a piece of your own heart walking around. I cried today just thinking about my 5 year old having to go to public school (hubby's idea of less stress for me - we homeschool). Enjoy it, video it, you'll cry when you watch it 10 years from now.
