Which scale would you use?

Tuesday, November 23, 2010

With Hawaii in the future, I've decided once again to really take this weight loss seriously. I bought a Weight Watchers scale in 2008, and it's seen it's better days. The pads are wearing out, and you have to step on it three different times to get a steady read out. For example the scale with first read 183 then on the second step it might read 185 or 186 and then on the third step 183 again. Sometimes it takes three or four steps after this to get a similar reading.

So yesterday I went and bought a new scale. I bought a Taylor brand from Target that came highly rec by a couple of friends and family members. I stepped on the scale this morning and it read 180.6 Honestly I was floored. That's a number I haven't see in over two years. And if I have seen it, I've been sick with the stomach flu.

I quickly stepped on the WW scale to see what it would give me. I know I've been eating better with Hubs out of the house, but not that good. The first reading said 185.9 The second reading was 182.7 and the final reading which I got to stick three more times was 183.2. I stepped back on the Taylor scale and it read the 180.6 consistently.

My vain side says to use the Taylor scale, and dump the WW since it's been through some stuff. I know I've lost some weight. At a Dr. appt in early Oct I weighed in less at my pm appt than I did when I weighed myself that am. Not by much maybe 1.5 lbs. Then I got stressed with the wedding the end of the month, and work, and I know I lost more weight because my bridesmaids dress which fit beautifully did not fit so beautifully the day of the wedding.

So here's my dilemma, which scale?

Go with the new scale! May as well inject a little fun into your heard work. You can't trust a scale that you step on 3 times to take an average. Even if the new one is a little "light," it's the direction it heads in that counts.

It doesn't really matter, just pick a scale and stick with it. In the end, it's just a number and you're trying to make the number move in a particular direction (or maintain it).

Go with the new scale and throw out the old one.

This weight loss / eat healthy plan I was supposed to be doing with hubs lasted a little longer than I thought it would. Hubs dropped out of it for good a few weeks ago. He still eats the portioned out food that I give him, but I don't have any control over the kind of thing. He'll lose the weight when he wants to. The thing is his heartburn has flared up again and it's not pretty. I'm trying really hard not to be the nagging wife, but it's starting to bother me.

I picked up added motivation for running a couple weeks ago when I was offered a job. While the job was technically mine, I still had to do the doctor's check up and the running part which was a mile and a half in 17 minutes. Everyone has been telling me it's doable and I have nothing to worry about. However, I don't want to cross the finish line and decide that I need a stretcher. It doesn't look good to a future employer. Never having been a runner I've started out slow and am working my way up. It's nice to see the scale move. Three weeks of serious running and I've been able to keep the weight off and lose some in the process.

Update to weight loss

The weight loss plan with Hubs is moving along nicely. I've lost a total of four pounds in the last three weeks. I will admit that I'm a little disappointed that the scale hasn't dropped more quickly, but I'd rather have my body get used to the weight loss and my new eating habits instead of losing the weight and then just gaining it all back again. And I'm trying to stay positive about the fact that my weight hasn't fluctuated between my starting weight and where I am now.

I have noticed that I don't feel as good as I do when I'm eating more healthy meals. Soda now makes me jittery and almost sick. Since I don't cook with salt a lot of foods are tasting more salty or too sweet. Guess these are steps in the right direction.

You want to lose slow!! I've lost 46 lbs in 7 months but I wish I had lost slower... You need to let your body adjust to the weight loss. & I read somewhere if you lose more than 2 lbs a week, anything above 2 lbs is either bone, tissue, or muscle you are losing. ODD!!

Week 1 Complete

Monday, July 05, 2010

Today the scale read 184.7. Down 3.4 lbs from last week. I seriously stepped on the scale at least four more times and it didn't change once. I prayed that I at least lost one pound. I was surprised to see three. Mother in Law (MIL) is in town this weekend and we ate out Saturday night when she arrived, and cooked out on the grill last night. We also worked pretty hard repaving the drive way with Hubs.

Today I took MIL grocery shopping. One of her favorite things to do when she visits is to cook stuff for our freezer. I was amazed while walking around the store with her how much will power I had. Hubs had requested a number of items since it was hot. One of them being ice cream. We brought back two different flavors. And MIL insisted I pick up my favorite too. I had to keep telling her that my will power sucked (which it does) because chances are the half gallon she wanted me to buy would be gone by the end of the week...probably sooner. And I'd be kicking myself for not watching it closer.

I also realized how much I say no to, and it kind of surprised me. MIL asked several times if I would like different casseroles made up, if she could buy us more food than what we needed. And besides the fact that I was trying to keep her grocery bill down (Yes, she cooks, she cleans and she pays for the grocery bill!) there was just some stuff I didn't want making it's way into the house. Like the freshly baked cream puffs, or the two liter bottles of soda. Not saying that I don't treat myself, but I really want to lose the weight.

Eleven weeks to go until my first dress fitting for that beautiful black dress. My first appointment was success and less stress, since the woman knows she can alter the top although it will cost less if I can lose ten pounds. Chances are I'll lose the weight because I'm not stressed out about fitting into it. Same think happened with my wedding dress.

Happy Belated 4th of July everyone!

Day 2 going strong

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

Yesterday was the official start to Hubs and my weight loss program/project ect. I weighed in at 188.1 and we've agreed to keep a weekly spread sheet of our progress. We agreed it's easier to see the progress when you remember exactly what the start was.

On Sunday I had cooked up some meals and portioned them out to exactly one serving. When Hubs returned home last night he said he didn't feel so tired or drug out, but was surprised as to what a serving actually was. Considering we were probably putting a portion and a half for lunches. This led to a discussion about how it's really easy to eat more than a portion. Which still amazes me. Last night Hubs portioned out whole wheat cereal for his drive in to work. I think he's going to see a huge drop in weight once

We're also on Day 5 of taking both dogs for a walk after dinner for at least half an hour, but it's been pushing forty-five minutes. We're going into a heat wave in the next few days. My question is, if it's hot outside do you burn more calories when it's hotter?
