I Can’t Believe I Had Just One Dessert!

This is the FIRST time since I started my first diet at age 12 that I attended a function with dreamy desserts (pretty tartlets, cheesecakes, and brownies drive me wild) and managed to take only one dessert; a chocolate chip cookie! I publicly announced to my husband that I am done with dieting; instead I am going to do full-focus on new attitudes toward food. I used to have my own version of that portion plate that shows how much of various food groups to have- half dessert, a fourth carbs, and a fourth “other”. It is a wonder I didn’t even gain more weight over the years than I did! I am realistic, this does not mean I will be a one dessert girl forevermore. I achieved this triumph by mentally picturing myself at the event before I left home. I pictured myself at the buffet line passing up rolls and substituting potato salad for a small portion of bean salad. I am glad that many functions involving buffets seem to offer more healthy choices than in the past. Another first for me was that I ate normal meals before leaving- in the past, I would have skipped eating at home due to guilt and the thought that I would be able to eat more calories at the event. This would result not only in eating too much out, but also feeling hungry later that day and eating again! A “normal” eater would think, “So what is such a big deal about all that?” but for a lifetime binge eater like me, these are huge steps.

    This can become the norm and eventually, it won't even seem like any kind of sacrifice. I went to a buffet and skipped dessert yesterday because I genuinely preferred to have a moderate portion of potatoes cooked a way I never would take the trouble to make at home (plus other food, of course). But it has taken me a couple of years to get really comfortable. I've lost 16% of my weight. Some people have said, Well, you're not going to lose anymore, are you? I say, I don't know. I'm not on a diet. You don't have to be "on a diet" to want to have guidelines for when and how much to eat in this culture. I call it fierce moderation.

Still Hanging On

It is certainly a lot harder for me to stick to disciplined eating when the seas of life are rough out there. So far, I am hanging on, by the tips of my fingers anyway. The coming weeks will be full of dealing with funeral related affairs, and I will be called upon to be a responsible family member in looking after loved ones while dealing with my own grief, which overwhelms me at times. I also have a bunch of medical appointments. I had to postpone one because I have something I have to deal with almost every other day in June. I tell myself that old adage, "When the going gets tough..."

Strategy Time

My stress level continues to be sky-high so it is time to develop a strategy to keep on track to my weight and fitness goals. Temperatures this Memorial Day are going to be in the 90s here, so I am revamping my eating and drinking choices. I had my usual oatmeal and protein at 6, but I am going to look at cool foods as the theme for the rest of the day. Time to keep the ice cube trays filled too, because I do not drink unless forced to, but cold drinks in summer are easier to take than warm ones.

    Not sure if your a water bottle drinker but placing those in the freezer for a bit makes a nice cold water drink.

God help me through this tragedy

I am praying for strength. A horrible tragedy has happened in my family to a loved one; something like this could lead me to abandon all my work on achieving a healthy weight and lifestyle. All I can do is pray and hope I can get over this initial shock. I think my blood pressure might be very high and I have quite a persistent headache that aspirin doesn't help. Just need to pray.

    It will actually be better if you stick to moderate eating of mostly healthy food, although it makes sense to rely on some prepared foods if necessary. I'm sorry you're having to face this. emoticon

    I feel the positive effect of your prayers and appreciate them very much. I have made a firm decision to forgive those who murder so my own soul can be at ease, and I made it through yesterday by keeping a reasonably healthy routine.

    I'm sorry that you're suffering with a family tragedy, but please no matter what goes on in life, surely this is a reason to hold on to your good work, and your targets.. not dismiss them. All have bad issues and things to deal with on a daily basis, but truly we all need anchors, perhaps, religion, friends, whatever you find comforting.. and this may give you a branch to hold on to during your difficult time.. please don't give up on yourself - very best wishes intended x

On a positive note

I have been down over the pants destruction incident, but to be positive, I am now wearing regular size slacks and the plus size ones are way too big. Yes, it looks like clothes are made so much more flimsier these days. The fabric seems quite cheap in quality, but I paid a lot. I also do not like the dropped waist style; seems like all the pants I looked at were that way. sigh, but I am dropping sizes; love that!
