I originally intended to blog tonight about my goals for 2011. However, something happened today in my area that called on my heart so much that I want to write about it. A Deputy Sheriff was shot and killed in the line of duty this morning. She was taking an evidence photograph, and was executed with a shotgun. She never had a chance to defend herself or call for help.

Heaven gained an angel, but earth lost a hero.

How often each day do we take the gift of our lives for granted? How many mornings do we awaken and set the tone of our day based upon what number the scale reads? How often do we look at the mirror and hate our bodies, condemn our strech marks, chastize our thighs, curse our cellulite? How often do we judge the merit of a day based upon what we chose to eat?

If you want to change the world, change yourself. The first choice you need to make, though, it to love yourself and be kind to yourself. The Bible says to love your neighor as you do yourself...well...if you're hating yourself for any reason, how can you love anyone else?

Every single moment of life is far too precious for us to judge ourselves for even one second. Be thankful that your heart beats, your lungs fill with air, your brain thinks, and your spirit lives. Be thankful that each and every day you have the glorious opportunity to be an asset to this world that needs love and kindness from all of us so very much.

All the lies, crime, violence, hate, neglect, just has to go. It has to start at home though. It has to start with not treating yourself in such a way.

Look in the mirror in the morning, and tell God how thankful you are to be here, and how thankful you are to have what you have, because your life is absolutely the most precious gift you have and will ever be given. Regardless of whether you are fat or thin, it doesn't matter. What really matters is that you are a precious and perfect creation of God.

Hug and kiss your children as often as you can. Tell your husband/wife that you love them at every opportunity. Spend time with those you love. Send flowers just because. Go out of your way to do nice things for strangers. Love and kindness grows where it is spread.

RIP Deputy Suzanne Waughtel Hopper. Thank you for your service.

    I was so horrified when I heard this story on the news. It's so senseless and stupid and tragic. The lessons you took from this horrible event touched me deeply. You are absolutely right.

    Way too many of us are way too critical of ourselves and others. You are absolutely right that we need to stop judging! Thanks for this blog. We never know how our day will end, do we? We never know if a kind act is our last kind act. We never know if we are living our last opportunity to touch another person's life. It is hard to live in the moment but that is certainly the ideal.

My heart goes out to this deputy and her family. emoticon

    yes I am so sad for the family. I am not sure why the man had the urge to kill. That 17 year old girl killed in auto accident 235 was our grandneice. She was so excited about being a senior and just lloking forward to life.

Back to back pain

Well, after having to carry Jacob home on our last two hikes, I have officially exacerbated my back injury. It hurts to do everything. It also hurts to do nothing. I did my Yoga for Back Pain DVD, and it actually made it worse

Obviously, my body is telling me I need to go in a new direction. I just need to figure out which direction that may be.

I find it so much more motivating to eat healthy when I'm working out. However, I know that each pound I lose is going to take pressure off my back and reduce my risk of having this pain flare up again in the future.

This week I started an eating plan of my own design which I like to call "Cook it Your Da*n Self" eating...I realized how many calories (and how much of my hard earned $$$) I was wasting on restaurant food, and decided I could eat what I wanted so long as I cooked it myself. I found that I could cook almost everything I like to eat from a restaurant for at least 50% less calories and cost, and I'm going to continue with that.

I am fighting the urge to self medicate this back pain with food. I gave in and ate yesterday and today through the pain, but I'm putting a stop to it right now. OREOS WILL NOT MAKE MY BACK FEEL ANY BETTER. They surely don't make my jeans fit better, either.

Sparkfriends, I need all the support on this that I can get!

    Back pain really sucks. I've been laid low w/back pain many times.

I hope you feel better soon. My chiropractor is my friend. And especially for back pain he seems to have ways to help me. But I digress.

I want to let you know I think it is just awesome that you are shouting down those oreos. No need to self-medicate w/food. You are so strong. I hope you feel better very very soon.

    I'm sorry to hear about your back pain. I hope it eases up for you soon.

I like your new eating plan! A good way to talk oneself out of a certain food is asking "do I want it bad enough to cook it myself?" Great idea!

    So sorry to hear about your back pain. It must be frustrating, when you're obviously making progress.

I listen to a podcast called, No Excuses to a Healthier You. I discovered the guy, Jonathan Roche, through Flylady (my hero!). Anyway, people call him all the time for motivation because they were doing really well, then got sidelined by an injury. His advice is always the same: Nail the non-exercise goals. Eat well, drink your water, only one dessert per week, etc. He's got a list of "15 secrets" in three catagories (the list is free if you join his Big Tent group - I'd be happy to share the address with you if you're interested.) diet, exercise and motivation. He says, if you ignore the exercise secrets, and sincerely focus on the diet and motivation secrets, then the sense of control you feel from taking positive steps should help you continue to lose weight until you're feeling better.

Sounds like your "cook it yourself" plan is a great step in the right direction, and you are so right that less weight will lead to less back pain. So, stay can do this!

Hope this makes sense - I'm still trying to wake up!

  I am so sorry that you are hurting {{{gentle hugs}}}. I know you must be frustrated at the thought of having to ease up on physical activity until your back feels better but please take care of yourself.
You said that you are fighting the urge to self-medicate with food - keep fighting, girl. Portion control is the name of the game right now. It will keep that big monkey named Regret off your already aching back. It is such a slippery slope -
I recently fought my way back after an extended binge and I don't want that to happen to you.

BTW, the title of your eating plan cracks me up - gotta love it!!!

    As a fellow back sufferer, I am impressed with your plan - you're going to do great with the meals. I just hope the back issue can be solved. It's hard to stay upbeat when you're in pain. There are so many days I'm happy to simply be able to get out of bed. Just like you saw it get worse toting your cherub around, I have to remind myself to NOT carry my tote bags - when the car signals me to buckle up my passenger, I know I am carrying too heavy of a tote!

Operation Beautiful

I have been hearing so much lately about how everyone hates themselves, hates their bodies, hates their lives, and I think it's time for all of us, myself included, to end the body bashing, self depreciating, I feel fat comments, jump off the negativity train, and blow up the tracks so we never get back on it again.

We bond as women with our fat comments! Why why why why why???

I recently came across this blog:

Basically, this woman started a crusade to change the negative self image of women across the world one post it note at a time. She began leaving post its with statements like "You are beautiful" or "You are perfect exactly as you are" or "You are loved" on public bathroom mirrors or stall doors. Other people have left them on the covers of or inside fashion magazines promoting that unrealistic body image. One left a post it on a Barbie doll box in the store.

I'm asking anyone who reads this blog to put a positive post it note up for herself in her bathroom, and also to leave one in a public place for someone else.

Remember that YOU, YES YOU, are beautiful, important, valued, and loved, exactly as you are RIGHT NOW.

    I love this website. I used the link to the "Free Compliments" poster and put it up at our local post office. Within 2 days they had all been taken. I loved the idea of just helping others to smile. What a simple yet powerful idea.

    Isn't that cool?? I just heard her speak on a podcast the other day, and love the Operation Beautiful idea. I work in a school, and plan to put post-its in the bathroom. Who needs self-esteem building more than most Jr./Sr. high school girls??

  I love this post and I think you're absolutely right! As women we need to heal our bodies, our hearts and our minds! I actually have "You are loved" typed into my cell phone so that I read it constantly. I will join this crusade.

My toddler gave me a black eye!

Today I've got a shiner, thanks to my 18 month old dinosaur. He head butted me in the face this morning while I was tickling him. I have to say that for about 15 minutes I was certain that I had facial fractures, the pain was so bad! Ice and makeup have gone a long way to making me feel/look better, as I work 5 of the next six days. At least my friends at the ER got a laugh out of it.

In better news, my 10 minute workout streak is on day 4. Did a mile with Leslie again tonight. I also downloaded the couch to 5k app onto my droid this afternoon, and plan on starting that next week :)

Goal achievement, here I come.

    OMG, my DS did that to me at about the same age, and I swear it's the reason I had to have surgery less than a year later to correct a deviated septum. It's amazing how stron they can be, and how hard those little heads really are! Hope you heal quickly!

    Oh the joys, bumps & bruises...
I just upgraded to a droid & feel I need to take an entire class on using the features! Looking forward to learning how to transfer my contact list & the appt notification sounds especially. Progress is hard sometimes!

    My son did the same thing to me when he was about 3. Elbowed me just below my right eye. It was a perfectly beautiful black eye, lol. The worst thing about it was it took forever to go away and I felt like people I didn't know were wondering if my husband did it. I am way too self conscious (sp).

Richard Simmons meets Lady Gaga and other workouts

I decided to return to basics (again) after posting my blog about goals. I think a big part of what was holding me back from working out was an intense fear of reinjury, and as much as I love Chalene Johnson, I'm just not ready yet to return to CLX or begin Turbo Fire. I know that some real fat burning magic happens with strength training, because adding lean muscle mass makes my metabolism burn more, not to mention makes the booty look way better in jeans, but I am not there yet. May even have to have some sessions of personal training when I do get back to ST just so that I have someone watching me and making sure I have perfect form. Anyway, I chose instead to start the same way I started in January: set a goal of just 10 minutes of SOMETHING a day.

I first learned of the 10 minute exercise streak when I read "The Spark" at the beginning of the year. If your motivation is lacking, I highly recommend you get a copy and read it. This week I joined the "10 minute exercise challenge" team here on SP to further commit to achieving this goal. In January when I did this, I usually did more than 10 minutes each time, and this is what made workouts not only habitual but also a time in my day that was for me that I truly enjoyed.

Anyway, had to work yesterday, so I went to Exercise TV on demand and had planned to do 1 mile of Leslie Sansone when I noticed that they had a short workout from World Fitness Day featuring Richard Simmons. I thought, what the heck, let's go retro and sweat to the oldies...

Imagine my shock and surprise when Richard Simmons led a workout to music by Lady Gaga!!! O....M....G....!!!! Richard actually dropped his shorts during this...on purpose...I guess he was doing his own interpretation of Lady Gaga's taking off her clothes in public. Didn't really need to see that, but I laughed my a$$ off! That was a fun workout. If he made a DVD entirely to Lady Gaga, I would buy it.

Continuing in my "back to basics" efforts, today I took Jacob hiking. If you have known me for a while, you know about the 30 park challenge from last summer. I think I may have to do a minichallenge with hikes for the fall. The weather was just the right temperature, and we hiked a 1.5 mile trail loop at Possum Creek metropark through the "Argonne Forest", which was the site of an amusement park from 1921-1941. They have marked the ruins of some of the park features, and it was a fascinating trek through the woods.

Started wearing my Bodybugg again today, too. I think the real beauty of this little tool for me is that it shows how much I'm sitting around. Some people underestimate what they eat, and I underestimate my couch surfing time. Bodybugg motivates me to get up and get moving...which is why I did a mile with Leslie Sansone tonight just for fun. :)

I can feel it; I'm finally on my way back!

    Great plan & SMART to have a trainer help you with form.

I'm starting OVER with low weights and not pushing myself to progress. I'm just DOING it and if one becomes wayy too easy, then, I'll move up. I don't work to FAILURE yet. I'm definitely being more careful with form, using a mirror for any delt rows cos I'm very apt to not use the middle of my back so much as my neck/ shoulders and that's the area I should mess with THE LEAST (at least on that move and that's where my spinal fusions are and of course the torn rotator). I'm not going for MILEAGE but time on tmill, too, since all the doctors said I shouldn't even run/ walk for exercise with a neuroma. So, I'm misbehaving but in a smarter way?

Hope you find what you can get away with, too!

    hello I would buy it also. I run on treadmill to lady ga ga. I have my first me day in such a long time. I am so exctied. I started doing 3 hours of cardio on monday hope to make a week of it.R U going to enter the carol wolf 5 K I am not yet and really have not gotten info. So today I will see what is going on with that. It is sept 11th I think???

    What's wrong with Richard Simmons? YOu make me want to put on his VCR tape and dance... I was actually on a cruise with my sisters for my 50th and I got a picture of him hugging me..... dropping his pants????? As for Lady GaGa, one of the zumba downloads I have is also to her song...
