Be Viligant!

Monday, January 09, 2012

The dictionary defines viligant as: alertly watchful especially to avoid danger. I encourage you to be viligant in maintaining your weight loss! When I lost 46 pounds, I said never again was I going back there! I felt so good at my new weight and in my new clothes. People commented on my weight loss. I kept the weight off for a year. And then, I relaxed, my local Curves closed, injuries occured and the weight slowly crept back. Over two years, about a pound a month. So slowly! I knew it was happening and kept trying in vain to stop it. Now, 25 pounds above my "happy weight", I am starting again! I know I can do this because I have done it before. It just frustrates me that I did not stop it sooner. So, my messsage to those of you who have worked hard to lose weight is be viligant! If you want the body of an athlete, you need to be an athlete! Find an exercise you can do, cut calories where you can. Begin every day new, and don't let minor setbacks get you down!

Ahhh, but the important part is that you are here and you've taken the big important step. You are doing something about it. See you around in Sparkland. Have a good week.

Congratulations on your new resolve and thank-you for reminding us to be vigilant. That "pound a month" is how many of us got here in the first place.

Benefits of Physical Therapy

Sunday, January 08, 2012

After graduating physical therapy on Wednesday, I have been working out every day and feeling the best I have in a long time! It is tough to find time for an hour of therapy two times a week for eight weeks. The first month I was not certain it was helping. But now I feel like it is the best thing I have done for my health. Two years ago, the orthopedic Dr. said I had lengthening of the ligaments and needed to wear an ankle brace. I wore this whenever I worked out for the past two years. The physical therapist said it was the way that I was walking that was causing strain on the ankle. Now, I have worked out the past four days with no brace and have no pain!

Awesome. I broke my leg several years ago and I know it has affected my walking. Your blog gives me just the jolt of courage I need to contact a physical therapist and see if we can get a doc to prescribe a course for me to learn to walk without creating these horrific calluses on my feet.

Variety is the Key to Exercise Success

Saturday, January 07, 2012

Today I worked out at home on the elliptical, yesterday I went to Curves and Thursday I took a class at the YMCA. Variety keeps me from getting bored with exercise and it also ensures I am working different muscle groups. I like the convenience of having an ellipitcal at home. I can work out on weekends without having to go to town. The Curves circuit works all my muscle groups and I enjoy working out with the girls. The classes at the Y are fun because of the music and the friends I make. Also, there is no other way I would be doing crunches and squats!

Good News, Bad News

Friday, January 06, 2012

The good news is I rejoined Curves today. The Curves in my town closed a year and a half ago. It was so convenient to go and workout. I have been gaining weight ever since. Since I work in the city, I have decided to join there. It is not as convenient, but I can stop by during the week after work. I really enjoyed the workout today. I like to alternate class sessions at the YMCA with Curves circuit workouts. Since I just graduated physical therapy on Wednesday, I am pushing it. I went to the Y last night and Curves tonight, but is felt good to be back.

The bad news is the fitness assessment was so disappointing. I knew I had gained weight, but to actually see all the numbers, from inches to body fat was terrible! One of the pluses to Curves is the monthly fitness assessment. I am determined to see results come February.

Don't think about what was; think about what's going to be now that you're back on track. Can't wait to see those "after" pictures!

Joining is the first step back to fitness and better health.

Good for you!

I too have been slowly gaining weight, ever since I completed the Portland Marathon this October. Weigh in about 12 pounds over my goal weight. Ugh. But....I'm determined to reverse this trend and the exercise is a big part of it (and of course, eating sensibly).

Best wishes for a healthy new year!

Back at the YMCA

Young man, are you listening to me?
I said, young man, what do you want to be?
I said, young man, you can make real your dreams.
But you got to know this one thing!

No man does it all by himself.
I said, young man, put your pride on the shelf,
And just go there, to the y.m.c.a.
I'm sure they can help you today.

It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.
It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.

Today brought this Village People song to mind! I was back working out at the Y for the first time in six months. A knee injury has had me on the shelf for the past six months. It was so good to see all my friends in class and to feel the pain of a good workout! It was a little scary at one point, I just graduated physical therapy yesterday and my knee hurt a little. I just tried to pace myself and go easy on the step aerobics. But it felt like coming out after a long hibernation. I am just thankful for my good health and to be able to participate in class again!
