After weight loss -- How to keep the weight off

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

~ Dr. Andrew Weil

What's the best way to lose excess weight and keep it off? A study from Boston's Children's Hospital suggests that a low-glycemic-index diet is the best. The researchers recruited 21 young adults who were overweight or obese and put them on diets so that they were able to lose between 10 to 15 percent of their body weight, about 30 pounds on average. Then they put their volunteers on one of three different diets that provided exactly the same number of calories but from different food sources. All of the volunteers spent four weeks on each of these three diets. These included:

~ A low-fat diet with 60 percent of calories from carbohydrate, 20 percent from fat and 20 percent from protein.
~ A low-glycemic -index diet designed to keep blood sugar stable with 40 percent of calories from carbohydrate, 40 percent from fat and 20 percent from protein.
~ A very low-carbohydrate diet with only 10 percent of calories from carbohydrate, 60 percent from fat and 30 percent from protein.

They found that the low-fat diet slowed metabolism the most and that the low carbohydrate diet had a negative impact on certain hormone levels, resulting in increased inflammation in the body (and consequent increase in disease risk). The winner here was the low-glycemic index diet with its emphasis on fiber-rich, natural carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats, including nuts, avocados and olive oil. That diet is very similar to Dr. Weil's anti-inflammatory diet.

Dr. Weil's Anti-inflammatory pyramid:

Good to know. The problem is it's so hard to know what is Low glycemic. Grpefruit has a higher GL index than cherries. It is completely unintuitive

I hope this isn't considered cheating...

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

I don't know about you, but taking the SP quizzes is about my least favorite thing to do on the site, especially since I've done most of them countless times. Sometimes I can't remember if I just did a particular one last week or 2 months ago. And of course, some times, like today, I just start on one that's suggested instead of looking it up to see if it's checked in my list already.

Uh!!! No points, it was a repeat. Did I want to do another one? No way. So today I tried something that worked. I opened another window, went to Start and reset my quizzes. Then I went back to my quiz, refreshed, and it was good as new. Got my points. Well....I took the quiz--I didn't REALLY cheat.

Repeating the quizzes will make you better at the trivia. Many of the quiz questions show up again as trivia questions.

It's ok to reset but it spark will only let you do it if it has been 6 months since you have done something before. I think it is good to reset and review and learn again!! That's not cheating!!! Smiles Barb

The best reason to take the quizzes is to improve your knowledge of the topic. It is all about learning how to improve your health so however many times you do it, it can improve your knowledge on the topic.

Here however is something I KNOW is cheating. I found it by accident and never do it but, if you are playing SparkTrivia and you don't like a question, you can get a different (maybe easier ) question by refreshing your screen.

It's not cheating if resetting is allowed, but retaking the same quizzes over and over gets real old fast!

I agree. It's not cheating. SP allows you to reset if you took the quiz a few months ago.

You're not cheating - you're reinforcing your Spark-knowledge by taking the quizzes again. :-)
