Great article!!! Thanks for sharing it. I got out the door & started up the mtn. today before I could talk myself out of it or get swamped w/work! It was totally awesome. Heard some wildlife walking on downed timber nearby, but nobody but hundreds of beautiful butterflies & me (& a lot of scat from various critters ) on my path. Endorphins were swimming in my bod!!!!

I've been buried in non-stop health insurance mistakes, transporting 40 miles DH to/from PT 3 times weekly (but my gym is within 2 miles of the PT...so I have been doing ST, thank goodness.) and trying to keep him on the sofa to heal.

Other than my stress-laden volunteer job, I'm out of excuses and hope to return to a more active life & can the "poor me, I really need some chocolate" song 'n dance routine! You'd give me a boot if you were here! lol

You will undoubtedly reach your 5% goal...you are made of pure steel determination. Your team is lucky to have you at the helm. Go, girl, go & keep us posted as you fly through the skies! !
Hugs!

You definitely have the tools to do anything you want to. But I think you're probably at a good BMI now ... you're just playing with this as a game now I'm betting. ;-)

Recommitting

Sunday, June 17, 2012

Wanting to post my goals for the Summer 5% Challenge, I began reading some of my earlier blogs to see what earlier goals have been. It's a great thing to do. I find that some "new" things to try have become regular habits now--like exercising 120 minutes a day at least 3 days of the week. That's the most we can log for a day in the challenge, and it's become one of my best weight loss boosters.

I want to incorporate into my Summer goals the "one word" I adopted for the year 2012 in January--ACTION.

Since winters in Michigan are a time of hibernation for me, summers are the natural time for outdoor activities.

Besides tracking my meals each day, and making a big effort to stay within my calorie guidelines, I will:

Put my feet on the ground in some kind of activity for at least 60 minutes each day; some I think I'll enjoy that will be a step up from my winter activities:

Hiking
Tennis
Running (slow)
Walking with poles
Walking to the grocery store and back carrying a few groceries
Pilates outside
Yoga outside
Meditation outside (no exercise min., but great to do)

Ready, Set, Go! Let's get this challenge party started!!!

It's SO true...every little healthy habit that we replace with unhealthy habits take us closer to our dreams and goals. I'm right there with you on your action plan. I'm committing to at least 30 minutes on our treadmill daily...even if I have to do it in 15 minute intervals...our life is a mile a minute..but you HAVE to schedule health time..otherwise it just doesn't happen. Hugs to you dear Teddy friend...I'm cheering you on throughout the entire challenge! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Is it my computer or an SP problem?

Sunday, May 06, 2012

All day today I have not been able to bring up my favorites or groupings in the Food Tracker. It just sits there trying to bring it up and never does. I also couldn't post a comment to a friend's status on his page (although I was able to write comments at the bottom), but I could comment on his status in my Friend Feed. Strange.

Hope I don't have a virus. I ran a scan, but no problems came up.

Did anyone else notice anything strange today on the site, or is yours working normally?

I had problems yesterday or the day before. Spark was very slow. Sometimes they do site maintenance. They vary maintenance times so that it doesn't affect the same regions every time. Unless there really IS a problem with your computer, things should be back to normal shortly.

I had trouble, too, but thought it was the Fitness Fairy reminding me that if I'd trade fitness for even just 1/2 the time I spend on SP, I'd be in the Olympics!

But I love my SP friends so much...and they (including YOU!) inspire me so much!

And I appreciate SP so very much that I'm hesitant to complain about such a great service they provide (especially free!). Hope your computer is humming along right now and sparking you on!

I have also had most of these problems and then it just kicks you off the site. Hopefully, they will fix the problem soon-so we can continue to spark. I have also stopped receiving the daily emails. emoticon

I frequently have issues with something not working right and it is frustrating. Wait and see if these problems continue tomorrow before worrying about it being a virus. Tonight I didn't have any problems, other nights things were so slow that I couldn't finish before midnight. They keep improving it and it has been getting better all along.
Good kick, hope you have better luck tomorrow!

7 Steps to a Healthful Weight

Thursday, May 03, 2012

From Dr. Weil's daily tips:

We all know the "secret" of successful weight loss: Eat less and exercise more. It's not always easy, but by adopting healthy eating habits and a regular exercise routine, you are sure to lose weight without depriving yourself of nourishing, satisfying food. And if you continue those good habits after you reach your goal, you will have an excellent chance of maintaining your desired weight. Here are some tips for successful weight loss:

Avoid artificial sweeteners and synthetic fat substitutes. They are unhealthy and don't help you develop good eating habits.

Dietary supplements or "fat-burning herbs" are usually just stimulants - don't rely on them. The pounds will surely return once you've stopped taking them.

Build lean body mass. Strength training burns excess calories and influences the way your brain regulates hunger, making you less susceptible to food cravings. Try lifting weights that are slightly heavier than you are used to for a rep or two, to challenge your muscles.

Kick up your heels. Dancing is another great way to expend calories - an hour of fast-paced dancing can burn 400-500 calories, plus it's fun!

Pay attention to the mental and spiritual aspects of weight control. Use relaxation exercises, instead of food, to combat anxiety.

Avoid late-night eating. The snack foods we consume when sitting in front of the television or to curb a craving tend to be heavy on processed carbs and inflammatory fats. Plan your dinner at a time that does not leave you hungry before bed, and if you must snack, opt for a piece of fruit or a handful of almonds.

As you lose the weight, don't become too impatient to reach your goal. You may be dissatisfied with your body, but it is beautiful just the same.

Do you mean to tell me that the NO SUGAR ADDED sweet potato pies are worse for me than those with real sugar? Oh my, what will I do ??? ( 'cause I'm surely not giving up the sweet p pie LOL).

Seriously though, do I eat "real" sugar instead?

These are great tips J. You're always on top of the good info. That's only one reason you're one of my favorite Sparkers.

I'll have to admit that I've been on diet drinks lately. With the work schedule I've devoted myself too, sadly there are days when I've propped my eyes open with the caffeinne and hung on until the work was done. Luckily that's a short term solution and I know that. I won't be hooked. LOL However, I've done a lot of research in the past on artificial sweeteners and I'm not convinced yet that they are the terrible influence that they're being made out as. Some of the test showing problems remind me of the cyclimate tests of the late 60s-early 70s. The portions fed to test animals are hundreds of times what even a heavy drinker of diet drinks would intake in a day.

I'm not saying they are completely safe, but I haven't been convinced yet by the evidence, and I'm the kind of guy who normally gets it right when evaluating those kinds of studies.

These are all so true. My biggest struggle is being patient. Losing weight is like watching paint dry. It just seems like it takes a long time--week in and week out.

I'm so used to instant gratification, so if I behave for a week I expect a reward on the scale in proportion to my effort. As we all know, it doesn't work like that and then it's easy to lose focus. Hopefully, I can continue to follow these tips and find a way to stay consistent in the long run.
