New Scale

Saturday, January 11, 2014

Ok most people may not like the idea of their husband getting them a new scale for their birthday. But he actually let me pick out the one that I want. It came via Amazon earlier this week. I finally had time today to open it and read through the information.

I programed it and got down to business. I was pleasantly surprised to see, that although I had gained some weight, all the other numbers, and that on too, were good.

Besides the standard weight and Body Fat%, it lets you know your hydration level (as a runner this is important to me). It also tells you how much of you is bone mass (as an over 50, that's important to me too). Then it has some other neat features like rating your physique, telling you how much your muscle mass weighs, and rates your visceral fat (that stuff around the middle).

Of course it has a margin of error but it gives you a good idea where you're at. Sometimes I let myself fall in the trap of judging my overall health and fitness by the weight on the scale (something I would not have someone else do as a personal trainer). This gives me some other food for thought (oh and it lets you know what your average calorie burn is per day for existing).

Anyway, just thought I'd share. The scale is the Tanita Iron Girl Body Composition Monitor

Sounds like a goal to work towards - getting down to the point where the old Tanita I have ("not for athletes") is not needed and getting a more sensitive one like you have!!

And picking out your own birthday gift leaves far less room for error! That's how my husband and I generally do! Or I can send him the "wishlist" from Amazon and let him do it from there.

Goals for 2014

Wednesday, January 01, 2014

Ha I haven't written a blog in 3 months-maybe that should be a 2014 goal-but it's not. My health and wellness goals for 2014 are as follows:

to try a new food, spice, something edible each month

to strength train a minimum of 2X weekly

to practice yoga 2X weekly

to run or do other cardio 4-5X weekly and hike for fun!

to maintain my weight in a 5# band--I guess I need to get in that band first, following my holiday food frenzy!

to run an Ultra marathon (my 3rd)--I don't have one picked out yet

Happy New Year All! emoticon

I nominate hummus or baba ghanoosh for this month!! Or anything at Zaytun's for lunch - it's a veritable "around the world buffet"!!

I was also curious about the #5 band. Are we talking those big elastic "therabands" or other forms of R....resistance bands (see that little "senior moment synapse there...?)...

Cheers!

    What is a #5 band?

By the way, your hubby's way with words is rubbing off on you. Love the alliteration in "...first following my holiday food frenzy!"

Run Happy

Sunday, September 15, 2013

Today I had the opportunity to set a PR in the Johnston's Half Marathon. I always get nervous before a race, and today was no exception. Today I went into the run with a different mindset-to do the best I can for this day. Normally I am a serious runner. All my pics show a real focus face. Today I set out to have a good race and some fun! In all the pics my husband took I'm smiling, waving, and having a good time.

Of course good training plays a part but a change in race day attitude gave me that extra push I needed to set a Personal Record. (I'm the one waving)

Run Happy!

Inactive Team Leader!

Tuesday, August 20, 2013

Hey, I resemble that comment! Actually I have been a little absent this summer. But I have been reading and commenting on blogs and huddling with the team several times weekly.

That being said, that does not necessarily make a good leader. I did forget to give out awards for July accomplishments too.

If anyone would like to be a co-leader with me I sure would enjoy the help. If not, that's ok.

I will get back on track and organize some events for the team, both virtually and physically. Look for a September get together and a challenge of some sort too.

Hey....I understand totally! I'm on Sparks everyday but can't visit everyone personally like I used to. I can't do it while working 60 hours a week and still maintaining my workouts. I've quit all my teams but 3 and don't lead any. I wish I could help you but at this time I can't co-lead....I'd be terrible. Hang in there....we know you are doing all you can do......you'll always be my Sparkhero!

Hugs

Reached an New Goal

Sunday, May 05, 2013

Some of you know my daughter Jessika_56 and she sets a lot of goals. I do not. But, one of the goals I set this year was to run my fastest 1/2 marathon. Today I did it. With Jessika and my husband and many others cheering on, I finished 13.1 in 1 hour 49 minutes and 4 seconds. emoticon

Like Jessika, I am sometimes hard on myself. I think I can do a little better, not a lot. And I look forward to testing that out in the fall. I have a trail 1/2 marathon in June, but trail times and road race times don't compare!

Overall, I'm happy with my results.

The best part was that I trained 15 people for the race and they all finished successfully too. I really enjoy being a coach. It was just as much fun seeing them succeed as it was finishing in a record time myself. Thanks to Jessika, again, for taking their pictures as they crossed the finish!
