Confused at the grocery store?

Friday, November 16, 2012

With all the chemicals and stuff we are left to sort through when shopping for healthy foods for ourselves and families, the task can be very challenging.

If you are a smartphone user, I highly recommend the FOODUCATE APP. It does a pretty good job helping at the store. It is even working on creating database information on GMO products.

Www.fooducate.com is awesome too! Discovered that after the app. It's very easy to use!

Another website I get daily email from, that is often helpful is www.greatist.com some days I just delete without reading, but other days they have great information. One of the things I really like about their info is an extensive works cited at the end of each article.

Here is the one I got today. It is helping decipher through the labels on food products.

The list of ingredients I try to avoid:
ALL artificial sweeteners
High fructose corn syrup
MSG (tricky, because it has 13-14 names - some seeming to be good for you.)

There are others I try to limit as well.. But those are my biggest.

What do you look for when reading nutrition labels?

Yes reading labels is a pain. Something that looks healthy often ends up not being so healthy. I try to keep calories, fat, sodium, and sugar as low as possible. And looking for things higher in protein, fiber and potassium. Good luck, I find just eating stuff without added things, like taste plain rice or plain pasta, you can find no additive seasonings and make them taste fantastic.

That's some great info! We live in a small community and have a hard time getting things fresh. Our bread doesn't last very long so my husband and I are trying to make some things from scratch to avoid throwing out moldy buns. But of course it can be hard to make everything from scratch so we try to avoid artificial sweeteners and high fructose corn syrup. I guess there are a few more things we need to be careful about.

To be quite honest, I just look at the sodium content. I need to do better.
I still eat way too much artificial sweetener, but I did give up diet soda a few months ago (I was drinking a TON) and I hope my body is a little healthier due to that. I still plan to give up the sweeteners altogether, I am just reluctant to give many more things up, at once, because I want to maintain my lack of bingeing.

I sure understand what you mean, Joette. It would be so nice if food companies had to give us truthful labeling without hiding ingredients because they are below the percentage require to have to include on list and hiding things under a million names.

I'm getting to the point where I buy as much as I can in it's natural form so that I can control all the ingredients...but boy that takes a lot more time. But even then there is GMO...gosh that one is impossible to navigate really. Thanks for the info.

Now I look for the fewest, most natural ingredients and try to eat whole foods. But that isn't 100%, so this will be very helpful. I have been avoiding foods with ingredients that I can't pronounce. I've already downloaded the app, and it looks like a good one. Can't wait to see how my cereal measures up!

Thanks for the tips.

Beautiful ...

Friday, September 14, 2012

The person in my life that I believe is the most Beautiful person is My Sister!

She walked in the breast cancer 3 day in August this year. This was in my honor. I am a 1 year survivor. She had an amazing adventure and shared some pictures, tears and laughter with me. I am so blessed to have the sister I have. She is an amazing person..

Here's the proof ;)

I call this picture "Beautiful Feet"

She took this picture of her own feet right after she finished the 3 day walk. The rose was given to her as she crossed the finish line.

SparkPage updated

Friday, July 20, 2012

My sparkpage had not been updated since I was active with sparkpeople several years ago. I had great success and fell off the wagon. The pictures and content were from around 2008. I finally took the time to update some pictures.

I left a lot of the text the same, but take a look at the pictures. :D

This was one of my first, "I feel good about me" pictures. I was down about 20 lbs here.

Busy Project

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Those of you who are in my "Weekly Challenge(s)" team have been hearing all about my new garden for about a month. I am so happy with it!

I started from scratch this spring. I decided to go with a "Square Foot Garden" method. These are raised bed gardens that are designed to not be stepped in. I have the equivalent of 4 square foot gardens. Each of my boxes measures 4'x8'. The method divides each 4x4 section into square foot spaces. That gives 32 spaces for plants in each of my boxes. This garden doesn't require the amount of space a traditional "row garden" requires.

My goal is to can my own Salsa this fall. I am on the hunt for a good recipe. If anyone has one, please let me know.

In my garden I have:
4 Roma Tomato
12 peppers (red, green, yellow)
4 jalapeno peppers
4 broccoli
4 cauliflower
4 zucchini
4 yellow summer squash
12 peas
8 green beans
carrots (2 squares)
beets (2 squares)
lettuce - red leaf
4 celery
sweet potato (3 squares)
regular potato (1 square)
marigolds (2 squares) - not going to eat these...but they are extremely beneficial to the garden

I still have 2 squares to fill. I don't know what I am going to put in them yet.

In the picture, the red pots are my Herb garden.

Now THAT's a garden - wow. It puts my little garden project to shame. I have a lot of tomatoes and herbs though so this may finally be the year I manage to pull up canning my own pasta sauce. It's the goal anyway.

Beautiful. I am so envious. Before I started driving a truck over the road, I often planted gardens and canned my produce. I am SOOOO wanting to garden again. Can't wait till I get the money to get a place where I don't have to do this job and then I, too, can raise my own food again.

WTG. I am so proud of you.
