So, I thought summer might be, you know, relaxing with lots of time.
Not so much.
I actually have a lot to do! Don't get me wrong, it's better, waaay better than the school year, but it's still pretty busy. Now, I like being busy. I'm terrible when I have nothing to do. I don't know the meaning of "relax" unless it is coupled with a specific activity.
Now, don't imagine that I'm crazy stressed out. I've been "relaxing" a lot this summer. I've done a lot of running, walking, and hitting the gym, and I love it. I've gotten to do a lot of reading and catching up on the internet as well.
Still, I think there's more on my summer to-do list than summer left. It happens.
One of the things on my summer to-do list was to blog here again, because my last blog was ... in March. That tells you how my life went.
Quick notes first:
Exercise: freakin' amazing, I have a gym again, I'm lifting heavy things, I'm running a lot, and I have a 5K in 2 weeks and a 10 mile in 14 weeks, and I'm crazy ready
Food: could be better, but I'm getting there. I'm finally learning to stop eating in certain situations before I've had too much, so that's good, because I was always the type to eat until I was nearly sick without even realizing it was happening. However, I still eat too many calories in things I need to limit like chocolate and peanut butter. Both good for me, in smaller portions than I eat. However, I've discovered smoothies with farm-fresh fruits and veggies and I'm ADDICTED and I love them. Yes, kale can go with strawberries.
Music: best part of summer! I found a place to karaoke that I like, it's cute, tiny, and I've had two separate guys buy me a drink. I've also reignited my songwriting, which is so much fun to do again, and I actually have some time for it.
Sleep: gotta get this under control. I tend to stay in bed too long, which doesn't make me feel any more rested, but I'm just a bum. I've tried a few things that haven't worked with this so far and will take suggestions. My newest idea is to have a project I enjoy (like writing music) planned to work on in the morning that I have to get up to do. We'll see how it goes.
Other: I'm doing a lot of prep for fall, and I'm hoping it makes fall less stressful, but I'll have even more going on, so who knows. I love it all though, so, I'm cool being crazy.
Okay. One goal down, more to go.
For my semi-geeky/dorky friends: I have a new podcast for you by buddies of mine from high school on various topics. Check it out:
The title is a great song from Jonathan Coulton which always reminds me of my life, minus the drugs. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zEFz

Busy just doesn't seem to fully describe my life. I'll take insane, thanks. Currently, I'm almost done with the grading for tomorrow, and then tomorrow I get to start on the grading for Wednesday, and then Thursday. Oh, I also need to write two lectures and two worksheets this week. Yikes!
I've probably been over-snacking since my stress is a bit high. However, I'm sticking with good, paleo stuff, so that's at least a bonus. Exercise is good. I bought myself a new toy today: a jump rope! I was doing the little bits of jump rope on UFC Trainer, and realized that it's a great calf workout, which I need. My calves are easily one of the weakest links in my running. Now, I can jump rope 5-10 minutes a day and make them stronger. It's also fun, although much harder than I remember.
Okay, I should get back to the grading, and other such things.

Wow. The world is conspiring against me blogging with spark being up and down. Anyway - here's a post anyway!
So, I was planning to update this blog two days ago, but I had it all written up and walked away from the computer for a bit, and the computer updated and dumped my entry. Totally annoying. Then I got kind of crazy busy again. You know how it is.
I was going to update that I made this delicious African-inspired stewed kale in tomato sauce dish and to go along with it some cut turkey hot dogs and asparagus in a creamy coriander and cumin sauce. Really good flavors.
Last night, the husband cooked: hurrah! He made mac and cheese with vegetables instead of pasta. More cheese than I would have had, but still low carb, so I'll take it. My plan for tonight is chicken florentine.
Also, on the food front, I made my own reasonable nut butter. I've been trying to up my omega-3's and one way was with walnuts and flax seed. So, I soaked and dried some walnuts, ground them in the coffee grinder with some sunflower seeds and some flax seed, and then threw that in the food processor with a bit of natural peanut butter, raw honey, coconut oil, and cooking oil. It's delicious! I like that it still tastes a bit like peanut butter, but has lots of other good stuff, and more paleo stuff, in it as well.
Later, I'm intending to make "fudge" out of ground almonds and walnuts, cocoa powder, cocnut oil, and dates.
My exercise is going well, it's the thing I'm generally good at and enjoy, so no troubles. Still improving the running. It will be slower going until I adjust to the new stance I think. I did sprints outside on the track in the sun on Wednesday morning around 11am. It was SO HOT! Maybe I'll just go in super early on Wednesday's and run before class at 8am instead. Of course, next week is not supposed to be summer-like temps in March! We are 30 degrees over the average high in upstate New York, yikes!
I'm trying some new things to get stuff I like done so I don't totally stress myself out with grading and the like, by putting aside time that I have to use for fun things no matter where my school stuff is at. It seems to work. I force myself to sing, and I still get just enough done, but I have more fun. I'll take it for now. I'm actually going to get caught up on grading this weekend. I'm home alone today because the husband is at work.
First, however, I'm going running before it gets too hot here!

We are having an unseasonably warm March, and I'm remembering why I like it in the North. I mean, I like being able to be outside, but I was out there for about a minute before I had 6 mosquito bites. I went running today, and it was insanely hot. Running should not be done above 65 degrees. It was almost 75.
Still, I ran. My workouts are good. I ate well today. I worked on stuff. I may have volunteered to do even more things! Suffice to say, I'm plenty busy. I still found some time to sing for you guys, and for me. I was singing this one to the radio in the car and was like, wow, I forgot how great a song that is. Thus, here you go!
I started a new 60 day program on UFC Trainer, this time with the goal to build strength. I'm also meant to be counting stairs on Fitocracy and doing push-ups.
I made a crazy peanut butter stir fry tonight loaded with veggies. A whole head of bok choy and a whole leek, and then a bunch of other things like bamboo shoots, baby corn, red bell pepper, green beans, and I think a few other things, oh, and chicken.
I know it's too warm out because there are ants in my kitchen. I'm going to have to get some better ant killing stuff.
Okay, got to finish my lecture for tomorrow. Skeletal system! Yay! Maybe.

I love this recording and singing thing, because it gives me an excuse to sing and record. Any requests?
Good weekend! I'm eating well, got in lots of serious exercise. My knee hurts a bit from the running, but nothing major and I don't think it's the nerve, I think I'm just adjusting to the newer running style, and my muscles and tendons are like, "you want me to what?"
I got some work done, but not enough. Therefore, gots to keep working. I'm doing good with staying on my sleep-wake schedule though, so that's good. Especially on weekends when I tend to get off.
We saw 21 Jump Street today. I loved the TV series back in the day (fell in love with Johnny Depp there long before the insanity about him hit!), and this was an excellent comedic homage. Jonah Hill is great.
Still enjoying mostly-Paleo eating. I made a Rueben casserole yesterday with sauerkraut, corned beef, and thousand island dressing. I threw in a little cheese, but not much, and I don't like the rye anyway, so I just crunched in a few caraway seeds to be more authentic. Then I made asparagus in bacon grease, red wine, garlic and red onion. I left the garlic chunks big so I could eat them, yum, garlic! I'm pretty sure I could eat roasted garlic all day.
I made new hot bacon dressing for my morning salad, and it's really good. I added more vinegar and a little mustard, and it has a nice tart flavor, and then the salad has beets in it for sweetness so there's a good flavor match.
Now, I have to go figure out what's going in my Southwest frittata. Probably peppers, tomatoes, onions, zucchini, spinach, maybe a little corn. Not sure what else. I'm having my part without cheese and putting cheese on for my husband. Hopefully, this will work.
Anyway, off to make the dinner, and maybe watch some Burn Notice.
