All the old dogs and the magicians

Oh, this is going to be a tough Lose-Ten-Pounds I think!

Starting point: 160.2
Current: 161.2 yikes!
Days to go 39
Goals accomplished yesterday: Strength training
Goals set for today: kickboxing (already done!), running, no sugar after 10pm, dial up the dark chocolate, dial down the peanut butter

I actually think I'm retaining water, because my diet shouldn't have caused a weight gain. I have picked up strength training again, which can totally cause water gain in sore muscles, which I have.

The dial-up on the dark chocolate is a preventative measure of sorts. I know that when I buckle down, I tend to lower sugar and carbs and that drops my serotonin levels so I feel annoyed and such, and I feel that happening already, and the dark chocolate will up my serotonin without overloading the sugars or the calories. I only eat 75% or higher cocoa.

Yeah, I'm a nerd. I have serotonin molecule earrings too, true story.

Anyway, I also need to stay busy, which isn't too hard because I'm still a bit behind where I want to be. Not as insane today as the last four when I was working on two manuscripts, now it's just lectures and grading. I'm teaching my lecture students blood typing today, woot! Hard concept, but great once you get it.

Now, I need to brush my hair and pack my running stuff to take to work.

Onward and upward!

Bruising Our Brains Hard Up Against Change

Monday, October 10, 2011

So, I started a new lose-ten-pounds project, and promptly had a terrible weekend! Well, I take that back: it was a fun weekend, but I ate very badly. My husband wanted to go camping, but he didn't feel well enough for real camping, but we decided to buy a small grill and pitch our tent in the backyard and pretend camp.

Let me tell you what this meant: burgers, marshmallows, and banana boats. Now, I also had a whole bunch of skewers of veggies, but put me and a bag of marshmallows in front of coals, and I'm a marshmallow-making-monster. We also went apple picking, and then I baked an apple tart. Now, I also made sugar-free applesauce and apple butter and I dehydrated apple chips, so that will be good for later.

Speaking of the tart, here's the recipe for the dough, because it was awesome!

1 1/2 cup my flour blend (millet, sorghum, tapioca)
1/4 cup arrowroot starch
2 tsp xantham gum
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup shortening
1 tbsp honey
1 egg yolk
1/4 cup almond milk

I suggest cutting the fats into the flours and then adding the liquids. It makes a dough that feels like pie crust.

So, today is a fast day, with some yoga and some interval training. I'm hoping to watch the water weight from the last two days drop off.

I need to keep remembering, also, that my body hates sugar. Every time I eat too much, I get tired and lethargic for like, the next 12 hours. No more sugar! Seriously. Srsly.

Time to get my yoga on.

Onward and upward!

All you can do is try harder next time. That's cool that you had a great time though! I've had times where my overeating wasn't even fun! So, it wasn't even close to worth it! Thanks for sharing the recipe!

    Hi, found you through 1CRAZYDOG.

I have the same reaction to sugar but haven't had the oomph to forgo it. I've decided to allow sucanat in my morning coffee but that's it. No more while bread either since that seems to produce the same reaction.
Ok now, today is Tday here in Toronto so I'm gonna make an exception to my rule - yes already. I made a pumpkin mousse cake. But after that...

Have a grand day and stay away from those mellows!

Touched Down in the Land of the Delta Blues

Saturday, October 08, 2011

So, I've been gone for a while. Oops!

I ran The Wine and Dine half marathon at Disney. Finished in 2:44:28 which beats my time from February of 2:45:30. I had a blast, went even faster than the first one. The only problem is that my calf keeps trying to cramp which slows me down. I need to work on that before my next long race.

So, I ended my last Lose-Ten-Pounds system at having lost just about 9.5lbs, which isn't bad. Then I wined and dined at Disney, and came back, and now it's time to start the next one! Welcome to my new game which is: Lose-Ten-Pounds-Before-Thanksgiving

Starting point: 160.2
Days to go 44
Goals accomplished yesterday: yoga, fasting
Goals set for today: Interval training

Okay, I need to get on here and blog and workout and stuff! I can do it!

Good job on the run! Plus, you were very close to your 10 lb goal which is quite good considering you've probably also been adding muscle.

Hope you'll have more time to hang out here in the next few weeks. I've missed you!

Just like the waivin' flag!

I'm watching the Sing-Off. I love a capella, and I love Ben Folds. I may be in love with Ben Folds. Anyway, thus, the title is the song the Yellow Jackets from my local U of Rochester are singing.

I made the best cookies every this morning, so I want to write down the recipe before I forget.

I mixed 1 cup of my flour blend (sorghum/millet/tapioca), 1/2 cup gluten-free oats, 1/2 cup whole milk, 1/2 cup apple cider and let it soak

I mixed 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp xantham gum, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp allspice 1/2 tsp nutmeg

I processed one whole, sweet apple and shredded about a half a cup of champagne cheddar cheese

I added an egg to the liquid mix, then added the sugar mix, then added the apple and cheese and mixed it all together.

I placed tbsp scoops on a nonstick baking sheet and baked at 375 for 14-16 minutes. They don't really spread much, so you can put them pretty close together.

Yummy! Just a little bit of the savory cheese in with the just-sweet-enough cookie. Also, the champagne in the cheese makes that more sweet than you would expect.

In other news, we had a bees nest in our bedroom window, and I hate bees enough to consider myself melisophobic, so yesterday was a bit anxiety filled, and to curb the anxiety, I also made it a nutella filled day. Yikes! It could have been worse, I ended at 162 this morning, and that will drop off with decent eating habits today, today's 6 mile run, and tomorrow's fast.

Right now, I have to finish getting ready for church and stuff, so I'm out! See you all tomorrow.

Onward and upward!

I Keep Looking At the Sky

It's a good day for Project LTPBHM (Lose-Ten-Pounds-Before-the-Half-Marathon)
Starting weight: 168.4
Current weight: 158.8 !!!!
Yesterday's Goals Accomplished: kickboxing, powerwalking, no peanut butter!
Days to go: 9 yikes!
Things to push me toward goal today: bodyweight circuit workout

I'm starting to get crazy excited about going to Disney and running the half-marathon! The husband is pretty sure that he's going to give it a try, even if he walks most of it. I'm aiming for a time between 2:30:00 and 2:45:00.

Other things are going well. I'm ahead of my lecture class finally, just have to stay that way. Labs are going pretty well too. I've been sleeping more than usual, but I've definitely still been recovering from this cold. I think today might be my first day with no stuffiness.

Interesting note on the cold recovery: since my nose got stuffy, I've noticed that I've been craving things that are either super sweet or super salty, and not much else. Also, food tastes just a bit funny. I think I'm trying to compensate for the stuffiness affecting subtle food flavors by craving the strong, simple flavors of sweet and salty, which I could taste.

Anyway, I'm hoping to enjoy my food again today. Also, get some exercise!

Onward and upward!

A large portion of the sense of taste is linked to smell. Which is why if a kid doesn't like a food you have them hold their nose shut and there's a chance they'll eat it. When you're sick you can't smell food the same way - if at all - so everything tastes different. As long as you realize that being sick makes you want sweet or salty foods then you can combat that by doing your best to consciously choose your foods when your sick instead of eating what you crave.
