It was an excellent day for me today. First of all, it is WOOHOO Wednesday, which is a day to celebrate already! I was celebrating the fact that I've been really good about staying off of sweets, and right now I'm limiting dried fruits as well, which is even harder. Anyway, I also found out that my latest submitted manuscript was accepted (with minor revisions) for publication in the journal Wetlands, yay! That brings my publications to 3, which since I graduated in 2007 isn't half bad. By the end of this year I should have submitted 3 more as well. Wow, I should get on that.

Okay, in non-science news I did my morning yoga and stair climbing today and will be doing some Mayhem in about half an hour. My food is on track and tonight was a meatless rice and beans meal, again, flew right past my husband. I'm aiming for once every two weeks right now for meatless, but maybe will up that at some point. I need a lot of protein so it's tough sometimes!

Tonight was wild rice, kidney beans, okra, corn, zucchini, spinach, turnip, lowfat cream cheese, and fermented salsa, topped with Mexican blend cheese. Could have been spicier though!

I'm trying to talk my husband into watching Patrick Stewart in Hamlet on PBS tonight. He says no. I set the DVR for me to watch later.

Okay, halfway through the week! Everyone keeping up on their exercise and diet? I can do it and so can you!

Cold

It is cold in Mass. Really cold. Like, winter cold. It will be May on Sat. Really April? Reminds me of a song lyric by Dar Williams, "They say April had a blizzard just to show she did not care." Yeah.

Anyway, too busy to blog yesterday, so quick update this morning. Yesterday was great. I did morning biking because it was drizzly, midday stairs, and evening turbulence training even after getting home at 9:30pm. My food was excellent. Here are my packaged items: bacon, nonstick spray, kielbasa, canned tomatoes, millet flour, rice, cheddar cheese. Wow, I think that's it! Rock.

Tuesday's Tip was to make yourself a priority, preferably a high one. My day was super busy yesterday, but I made sure to fit my workouts in because they make me feel better immediately and over time, and I am just as important as my work!

Okay, today is off to a good start with yoga and food is ready to go.

A little rain

Never hurt anyone. It was a light drizzle waiting for my bus home and I was the only one enjoying it, everyone else was under the bus stop. I like the rain. It's one of those interesting oddities about me.

Anyway, after Saturday I was determined to jump right back on track and I have. My eating has been pretty much perfect yesterday and today. I didn't exercise last night, but I did yoga before church. Today I've already done my morning workout and a stair climbing workout at work and have some serious Mayhem to accomplish later.

I'm still terribly busy, but getting things done! I have a huge work to-do list posted on my desktop at work with things that have to be accomplished each day, whew!

So, today was Motivational Monday! I have two quotes. One I found this morning to start off my week:

I keep on digging and digging, and I've dug out rocks before, and they are always bigger than they look, so you just have to keep going!

Also, this quote was posted by the excellent and talented actor and writer Jim Beaver (my Supernatural buddies will know as Bobby) on his facebook:

I love that! It's what I try to do, and it does make planning difficult and makes me busy, but I have a great time doing it!

Also, I'm thinking about how close to whole food eating my diet is as a few people I know are doing "eat whole foods" challenges lately. I think I'm going to post my packaged/processed foods here and see how I'm doing:
Breakfast: bacon and nonstick spray
Morning snack: all whole!
Lunch: ham, deli turkey, and bacon and feta, and salad dressing
Afternoon snack: all whole!
Dinner: canned tomatoes, kielbasa, millet flour
Planned snack: cheddar cheese

I think I'm pretty awfully impressive, don't you? I make so much of my own food it's almost scary. I do like my cured meats, but today was very high in them, usually it's more chicken, pork, and beef. I also don't make my own cheese and could buy better ones, but good cheese is so expensive, not there yet!

Okay. That's all I got time for tonight as I still have to workout and have snack, prep food for tomorrow, and edit a post for the blog girlsaregeeks.wordpress.com .

Tomorrow is my long day but I have it well planned, plenty to do, food to eat, and workouts to do. I hope it isn't raining in the morning so I can run! Otherwise it is the bike for me.

My Day Off

Today is my night off. I went running this morning, did 25 min. It was a hard 25 min for me, easy for my husband, but we were reversed the last two days of running, so I'm not shocked. I still made it. Ended on 'You give love a bad name' - always rising, awesome.

I ate pretty much okay until dinner. For dinner I made pizza. I have been working to adapt my mother's family pizza recipe to gluten-free, and tonight was nearly a perfect win. I used a mix of sorghum, millet, and tapioca, nearly 1:1:1, and about a tablespoon of xantham gum, and spread it very thin, and it crisped up perfectly! It was awesome pizza.

We got a Whole Foods cheesecake for dessert, I avoided the crumb bottom. It was yummy. We also split a bottle of wine. Tomorrow I will be back on track. I think I will actually fast through the morning and then stay pretty low carb all day too. That will get me fully back on track. Based on today's weigh-in, I have to lose about 4 more lbs in the next week to reach my original April goal. Maybe it will happen, maybe not. I'm still feeling good and getting stronger. I like that no matter what the scale says.

Okay, one more piece of cake, and maybe a small piece of pizza, then back to normal.

    Was it the vanilla bean cheesecake.... that was so emoticon
I didn't care for the crumb bottom or the whipped cream on top. But the cheesecake was heaven.

It is nice to take a break and enjoy it without excess.

    emoticonI will keep your gf crust recipe in the back of my mind. I had the BEST pizza of my life at a sm. restaurant in DC - the thinnest crispy crust w/white cheese and garlic. I'll never forget it, and I've yet to replicate it. You've given me hope :)

Sugar

So, a friend pointed me in the direction of a lecture by Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology on sugar, specifically fructose. It is really interesting and enlightening. Now, I already know that sugar is a problem, especially for me, but now I have further biochemical evidence for the fact that sugar is pretty literally poison in the body, or at least fructose. Here's the thing about fructose, you don't just get fructose from HFCS or agave or fruit, but it is half of sucrose which makes up table sugar, honey, and maple syrup.

So, the quick and easy of the biochemistry is that 1) all fructose goes the liver 2) most of it goes to fat synthesis 3) it can cause insulin resistance and increase inflammation. Essentially, fructose is metabolized like fat, therefore a lowfat diet high in fructose/sugar is like a high fat diet. Yup. Bad.

They have some simple suggestions to avoid this problem. Do not drink sugar: water and milk only (and in adult cases, unsweetened coffee/tea), eat more fiber (good for you in so many ways), Eat carbs with proteins, exercise. Funny, that sounds like my life!

Anyway, this is further excuses to avoid table sugar and agave nectar and limit honey and maple syrup. I make my baked goods with processed whole fruits, because then at least I'm getting fiber! I should see if there is a higher glucose item for sweetening out there too. Glucose is crummy, but way less crummy than fructose.

Anyway. Take some time and watch the video, totally worth it!

On that note, I'm staying mostly sugar free for the next thirty days, with one off night a week. I actually am not going anywhere until Memorial Day weekend, so I can do this!

My exercise today was good. I had to push myself through both I've already done, but I felt good once getting going. I'm actually interested in tonight's workout, so that's a good sign.

I fasted today until 4:30, so that should bring my weight back to happy tomorrow. Tomorrow I am making pizza, yum!

Okay, that was a little bit rambling, but hopefully useful and interesting. Stay off sugar!
