Remember all those things I said yesterday about how I probably did very well avoiding carbs and not overeating? Well, I forgot until this morning about one thing: sodium. This morning, I expected my scale to go down, but no, it went up 0.2lbs. Not a major concern, but considering that I was expecting at least a pound loss from my sugar escapades on Sunday, even a slight gain was a bit annoying.
Then I realized that almost everything I ate yesterday contained a bunch of sodium. I had sushi with soy sauce, salty seaweed salad, soups with salt, keilbasa, Caesar salad dressing, parmesan cheese. I don't currently track, but I would bet I was in the 3000-4000mg of sodium range yesterday. Actually, the fact that I didn't get dizzy standing at all until late, late in the evening even with no carbs should have been my tip-off.
aside: I've noticed lately I get a tiny bit dizzy when standing while I'm eating and exercising well. I've determined this is likely due to low blood pressure. Sodium increases blood pressure.
Anyway. It was a lot of sodium, which isn't a major issue for me since I have low blood pressure and generally eat very little sodium, but it meant that I retained even more water than usual (post-high carb periods can take me 2-3 days to drop the water weight). I'm hoping that today was mostly seriously back on track, and therefore tomorrow the Wii Fit balance board will love me!
Anyway, the moral of this story is Tuesday's Tip!
Don't weigh yourself the day after a high-sodium intake day. It will likely go up.
Now, I weigh myself almost every day and I am used to fluctuations like that, and I know they will work out in the end, but they still annoy me!
Okay. On to today. Today was a bit nuts. Me and hubby ran this morning, awesome run, I felt pretty great, although I acquired a blister on my heel, ouch. We had a fire alarm in the early afternoon at work, something was actually smoking too! Anyhow, instead of standing outside and doing nothing, I grabbed my shuffle on the way out and opted for my walk a little early.
The remainder of my day flip-flopped between actual work and twittering about Star Wars day (May the Fourth be with you!), then the wind kicked way up and the power went out. The sky went orange for a bit and those of us who have spent time in the midwest saw tornado conditions, but those cleared up. The power came on again, then went off again. I decided that was a sign to go home.
Unfortunately, my bus was seriously delayed because the high winds blew down trees and powerlines all over town and it took an hour to do what I normally do it 20 min.
I made it, the sky cleared, I made lovely Pad Thai for dinner, and now I am planning for another Turbulence Training Hardcore workout tonight!
And tomorrow, the scale will happily go down, a lot! The power of positive thinking, right?

As in Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, or DOMS, or the reason that about 3pm this afternoon my legs started aching from yesterday's Hardcore workout, ow! Still, it's good to know that I've been working hard!
Today was an odd day foodwise. I was going out to lunch for a celebratory lunch for my latest manuscript publication (woohoo!), and I wanted sushi. Anyway, since I didn't know what time lunch would be and such, I figured it was easier just to not eat until then, so I didn't have breakfast or snack. For lunch I had a salad with ginger dressing, miso soup, a sashimi platter (3 each of four kinds of fish, no rice), and a seaweed salad. So good! Also: no carbs/grains! Unless I'm really in the mood for a roll, I prefer my raw fish sans rice anyway. So, I don't know calorie wise how that was, but it couldn't have been that bad. I had my veggies and chopped liver in the afternoon, and for dinner parmesan cheese coated chicken, sausage soup with kale, and a salad. It has been quite the low carb day.
I'm hoping this helps me quickly make up for the sugar morning I gave myself yesterday and I drop most of the 4lb increase. Sometimes even I'm amazed how much sugars/carbs can make my weight fluctuate! I'll probably have some fruit tonight with my nuts and raw milk cheese.
I also made everybody who went to lunch with me walk there and back, a bit less than a mile each way. Hehe, I'm sneaky. We also missed a thunderstorm by about a minute, so that worked out great!
I ordered a dehydrator from Amazon and used gift certificates so it only cost about ~$10!! I can't wait for it to ship and get here so I can make stuff like crispy soaked nuts and crackers and fruit/veggie things and jerky!
Ok. So, today was pretty good, I think. I still have my major workout tonight which is going to be a Project Mayhem one, hehe. Tomorrow I'm back to my normal food system. I like that. I'm just a little bit OCD, and so getting back to something consistent always makes me a little more content than being thrown off by lunches out, even if they are for me.
I have to finish a blog entry tonight on playing minesweeper. Fun! I like minesweeper. I do logic puzzles to relax. Yeah, I know.
One more thing for you: Motivational Monday!
To understand the heart and mind of a person, look not at what he has already achieved, but at what he aspires to. --Kahlil Gibran
I don't always have a lot of great scale achievements, but I continue to aspire for more and more and so should all of you!
Any motivational thoughts to add this Monday? What are you planning for the week?

Have I mentioned recently how much I love chopped liver? If I haven't it is my favorite veggie dip. I make it with chicken livers, onions, olive oil, boiled eggs, and sea salt. That's it. Whole foods, good mix of fats and proteins, and mmmmm delicious. Also pretty cheap. I made my new batch of livers and onions tonight which will make four weeks worth of chopped liver, so I was thinking about it.
I made a dinner tonight that my husband complimented! That never happens, so I wrote it down recipes.sparkpeople.com/recip
e-detail.asp?recipe=1060596 . It was a bit Iron Chef as I was meant to make a meatloaf but it was too freakin' hot to turn the oven on.
On that note, I need workout shorts or AC. It was so hot while working out. Also, since it is May, I am starting a new workout plan, Turbulence Training Hardcore 2K10. I like hardcore, I need to really be on this month because I was a little over goal on Sat. Like, a pound and a half over goal. That means that May's goal is now 3.5 lbs and needs to be reached before Memorial Day. Preferably I will lose a bit more than that to make up for Memorial Day weekend with my in-laws.
Today was my sugar day, or at least morning. I didn't worry about getting some yummy stuff in at church and had a Reese's, but I stopped eating the sugar by 3pm and and am completely back on track. On the other hand, I made gluten-free, sugar-free rhubarb bread and everyone loved it! recipes.sparkpeople.com/recip
Okay. Time to get out of here and get some sleep, work and the website are keeping me super busy during the week!

Happy May Day!
Apparently, the weather wanted to be certain that we knew it was May because it got crazy hot today. Well, 80s, which is too hot for me. The end of my run this morning was in the sun, and it was tough! The nice thing about running is that about 1-2 minutes after I finish running, I feel great, even if during the last 10 minutes of running I feel like I'm dying. We ran for 28 minutes today, whew!
We also walked around the mall today, and had lunch at Friendly's, which is not a gluten-free friendly location (pun intended)! Even their salads would all need to be altered and their waffle fries are marked with wheat. I had a bacon cheeseburger, no bun, regular fries, and a side of broccoli. I made a point of not eating all the fries, I think I only ate half. That was a victory for me because I am a horrible plate cleaner in restaurants, especially things like fries. I'll just keep picking until they are gone. Not this time!
I decided to take tonight off from my evening workout. However, I stayed pretty good with diet all day. Tomorrow I'm allowing carbs and some sugar in the morning as my one day this week break, but back on once I get home!
Okay. No other news to report. I'm tired. Almost bedtime.

It was an excellent day for me today. First of all, it is WOOHOO Wednesday, which is a day to celebrate already! I was celebrating the fact that I've been really good about staying off of sweets, and right now I'm limiting dried fruits as well, which is even harder. Anyway, I also found out that my latest submitted manuscript was accepted (with minor revisions) for publication in the journal Wetlands, yay! That brings my publications to 3, which since I graduated in 2007 isn't half bad. By the end of this year I should have submitted 3 more as well. Wow, I should get on that.
Okay, in non-science news I did my morning yoga and stair climbing today and will be doing some Mayhem in about half an hour. My food is on track and tonight was a meatless rice and beans meal, again, flew right past my husband. I'm aiming for once every two weeks right now for meatless, but maybe will up that at some point. I need a lot of protein so it's tough sometimes!
Tonight was wild rice, kidney beans, okra, corn, zucchini, spinach, turnip, lowfat cream cheese, and fermented salsa, topped with Mexican blend cheese. Could have been spicier though!
I'm trying to talk my husband into watching Patrick Stewart in Hamlet on PBS tonight. He says no. I set the DVR for me to watch later.
Okay, halfway through the week! Everyone keeping up on their exercise and diet? I can do it and so can you!
