I've been asked what I've been doing or what's my secret more than once so I thought I'd share a bit more details about that here.
I counted calories almost the entire 4 months that it took to reach my goal. During the week I stayed between 1200-1550 and on the weekends I was around 1800-2000. I think I usually averaged about 1575/day for the week. I ate a balanced diet. Low-carb doesn't work for me. I drank lots of water, usually got close to 8 hours of sleep. I lifted weights more than I did cardio, but my weight training was circuit training where you quickly go from one thing to another so your heart rate stays up like with cardio. I did that 2x/week. And most weeks I would throw in a 3rd day of exercising that was more cardio than weights, but still some strength training in the form of lunges, squats and push-ups usually. I think the weight training really helped me lose the weight. I tried never to go to bed hungry. I think when you do that it slows your metabolism. If I was ever hungry before bed, I'd make sure to have a healthy snack (or a not so healthy one if I was still close to 1200 cals.) I tried to do the whole thing slow and steady and not deprive myself or over-exercise because I knew I'd burn out if I was too strict. Last but not least, the crucial ingredient to my success was finding a board on this site where I could give and receive support and posting there regularly.
