I have been looking forward to this hike for weeks and it didn't disapoint. My mother, sister and I took what is called the North Hills Trail at Diamond Valley Lake. We had never taken this hike before and weren't sure what to expect. The trail starts at the base of some hills and it deceptively easy at first. It is not long, though, before the trail starts to go up the hills at quite a steep angle at times. At the summit you have a beautiful view of the lake and then the trail goes down and remains mostly flat for the last 2.7 miles. So, last time we took a hike we got lost and took a detour, we did not get lost this time, but we did still have an adventure. We decided that 6.5 miles was plenty long and instead of hiking back we called my brother-in-law to come meet us at the trail end. Turns out, and what we didn't know was, that the gates at the other end of the trail were closed!!!! There was no notice of this at the trail head! We had noticed that past the lake the trail was not well traveled and figured most hikers stopped at the lake view and went back. We didn't think it was because there was no trail access at the other end. After an additional one mile hike we found a place where we could slip through a fence and meet up with my BIL's truck. It was awefully nice having a ride back to the start of the hike! The pedometers registered between 7.79 miles and 8.5 miles walked, between 19000 and 23000 steps with between 10000 and 15000 of those steps being aerobic steps. WhooHoo we blasted the calories today! It was a terrific hike, my legs and rear are feeling well worked and I am looking forward to doing it again soon! Sister and Mother on what we would come to think of as a mild hill. Overlooking the west end of our valley. Done Girl Sister Done Girl Me

Last night was Youth Baseball Night at the Lake Elsinore Storm-our local minor league baseball team. We had seats on row G-so really close to the field. The little league teams got to walk the field and be announced. A really awesome part of the night got me really choked up and kind of emotional. The Storm was honoring our armed forces this weekend and a big part of the opening ceremonies was devoted to them. I have a nephew in the Air Force and a nephew in the Army-the Army nephew is currently in Iraq. The night started with Navy Seals parachuting into the stadium. One was carrying the POW flag and another was carrying the US Flag. My heart soared as I watched our colors flying into the stadium. The Marine Corps Precision Band marched in and played a few patriotic songs and then remained on the field while a new group of Marines were sworn in and applauded by the crowd. Then the Marines played our National Anthem. It was stirring beyond words. We should do away with mediocre singers doing their own horrible rendition of our National Anthem and just have the Marines play it everytime. I was so proud of our country as I watched these wonderful young men and women display their love for their country. I am so blessed to live in this wonderful country.
The rest of the night was just fun. I missed every exciting moment of the game because my daughters made me take several trips to the WC. Our seats were quite close to the field so each trip meant going up some stairs. Each trip I went as fast as I could (remember a couple trips were with a two and a half year old). Each time I was barely winded at the top! I was sooo surprised. This exercise thing is working!! So that is the good news, the bad news, I ate nachos and I ate them with GUSTO! I ate the cheese, I ate the chili, I ate the salsa (which was probably the best decision of the night!). My tummy was not happy with me on the way home-amazing how eating mostly right can turn your stomach against things that are soooo wrong to eat. To help off set some of the nacho binge I ran down the stairs too! I gave daughters a head start and then raced down to catch up!
The Storm played the Quakes (California-earthquakes are a thing to name baseball teams after). The Quakes are affiliated with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (what a ridiculous name-many of us in CA hate it-it doesn't make any sense (Anaheim is in Orange County not LA)okay rant over). The Angels have a player, Vladimir Guerrero, who is currently on the disabled list, but to stay in playing shape until he can come back to the Angels he is playing with the Quakes. SO, it was an exciting night! Of course, the Quakes won..Vlady got a hit that started a chain reaction resulting in 4 runs in one inning-ouch! (I missed the hit because I was with a daughter in the WC-awww man).
As much fun as we had the highlight for me was my ability to walk from the parking lot to the stands, to run stairs, and then walk back again at the end of the evening without getting really winded. I am enjoying this being healthier thing! It's pretty cool-next test is our long hike on Monday-I have new hiking boots and everything-I am wearing them around today to get them a little broken in before Monday. Everyone have a safe and happy weekend! My family having fun at the game!

Wow! Yesterday turned out to be even busier than I expected! Husband "forgot" what time it was while at work and did not make it home in time for baseball practice so I had to run it (he is the coach for our kids' baseball team). I got some arm exercise in pitching balls and ducking balls (my son and his friend are pretty good hitters and I ducked a few times, afraid I was going to get beaned! So, when I mentioned, in yesterday's blog that I am thinking about moving strength to Wednesday instead of Thursday-it's a done deal. I didn't get my strength in yesterday. So it is Strength today and then I will do small challenges tomorrow (Sunday is my day off-no exercise except a walk) and then back to full strength training on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I got my cardio in and that was great! I had planned to do a video I have and enjoy. But, then HAPPY DAY, Netflix came before I started my workout. The kiddies get so excited about Netflix that I had to open them before they would let me do anything else. I had totally forgotten that a Leslie Sansone DVD was on my delivery list. It was the 5-day slim program. I had Netflixed a Leslie Sansone before, but I was involved with an exercise class at the time and I kept not being able to fit it in so I sent it back. I LOVED it!! The moves are basic and easy to follow, she is happy and motivating without being annoying and she gives clear instructions and, when appropriate, describes modifications for those who are beginners or not as fit as herself. I was having so much fun that I pushed the limits of when I had to leave to pick up my son from K-garten to the very last minute. I ended up doing 2 miles (which I am very proud of since I was new her program) along with warm-up and cool-down. One of my favorite parts is that I don't have to be terribly coordinated to keep up with her (LOL-because I am not really coordinated). You should watch me do one of the FIRM workouts sometime. I return to a basic march ALOT because I keep getting the wrong foot in the way or just plain messing up the moves (it truly is comical-my husband rarely laughs at comedies-he laughs at me doing The Firm). Anyhoo, another busy day today, but Leslie is on my list of things to get done for sure and strength today for real!! I gotta build some muscles to help me burn off that last pound to hit 20 (and of course the next 100+ after that)!!

Thursdays are my busiest day. Today is "library day", as my girls like to call it. It is focus on the kitchen day (it needs a lot of help right now). It is also cardio and strength day! I think I need to change that! Next week I will shift strength to Wednesday instead of Thursday! Today is going to be a good day! I recently changed my weigh-in day to Monday instead of Thursday, but I still weighed today! I am down another 2 pounds! I am 1 pound away from 20 pounds lost!!! YEAH! So, today is not going to be a slacker day! No, I will do what I need to do for my family and then it is time for some SERIOUS cardio and some awesome STRENGTH training, and my challenges. What a great day!! I will not look like this for long!

While yesterday was much cooler than it has been the kidlets still wanted to swim. We were at the pool for 2.5 hours! But we had fun! I stayed in the water the entire time. I did a variety of activities most of the time too. When I added up all the time and what I did the tracker said I burned almost as much as I ate! I did short laps-along the short side of the pool and in the shallow end so I could keep an eye on the kiddies-for 20 minutes (I wrapped my phone in a towel and kept it poolside so I could check my time). I jogged, racing my son, for 15 minutes. I would race to oneside going forward and then race back going backward (really worked my behind), the water added resistance and kept me from falling over when I ran backwards, LOL! I did 100 hops, over the line deliniating the shallow and deep ends. I did 50 forward-backward and 50 side to side. I did 100 jumping jacks. I did some wall push-ups, pulling myself back towards the wall since the water wouldn't let gravity do its job and naturally pull me back towards the wall. I did some lunges and squats and I carried kids across the pool piggyback in a walking lunge. I was sooo tired when we got back to the house I was ready for a nap. Instead I showered, made turkey burgers for dinner, went to vote and then gave the kiddies a bath. Today I am just going to do a video and my challenges. The kids want to go to the pool again-I think I'll let their dad do that-it's too much WORK!
