Ding Dong the Beast is dead the wicked beast is dead...

Saturday, September 04, 2010

I've been kind of AWOL lately. Things have been busy, but I am getting a schedule down and will make time to catch up with as many of my friends as I can tomorrow. :)

Today the Beast died. For those of you saying "what the heck is the beast" is what my sister named the hill we decided to run up before Labor Day. Today was the day.

My sister (4everadonegirl), AWEISE, and myself met up at 0530 in the dark, to start our run. It was darker than usual due to a stretch of streetlights being out and the moon being a mere sliver. Where we begin our run is at the bottom of a hill leading up to a reservoir lake. The lake is man made, created by a damn and for the express purpose of storing water. To make it a little more fun for locals they added some fish and let boats that pass an inspection onto the lake. Every other Saturday we show up and there is a long line of trucks, boats and cars waiting to hit the lake in hopes of catching something fresh for dinner. I call it the guy version of "open, open, open".

Usually we run just a small section of this road and once the line mo ves to the top of the hill we see only the occasional car and boat. Today was a bit different.

We started out with our normal warm-up loop and headed up the hill. My sister, of course was way ahead, she's getting quite speedy!! AWEISE and I hit our normal "stop here and start repeats" section and kept going. We stayed right together until the top. I got to the guardrail where Kristen usually turns around and took a walking break. Got past a fairly steep section and started running again. Made it, maybe, 2/3 of the way up the next section of hill...

This is the view from just about the top of that hill. Right at the top we caught up to all the cars. Turns out once they head up the hill they end up in a new line waiting to pay their fees and be let in. So now, here we are running past a hundred or so guys, kids, and occasionally a woman. We got a couple odd looks, oh well emoticon. Several people said hi. I walked a bit again and then lo and behold a downhill stretch ending at the parking lot!! Downhill was a lot of fun!! Before we knew it we had gotten to the top!! That really wasn't so bad at all.

The beast had nothing to say. My sister, who blasted up that hill, stuck the knife in and Aweise and I finished him off. A dad and son ended up joining us for the last 100 yards or so, just for the heck of it. I think they were bored and just wanted something to do. We met up with Kristen and picked a good spot to take a couple pics....The dad who raced his son took this one for us...

Oh look, I almost forgot, my sister and I are wearing our Bondi Bands!! My sister is in the blue-her's says "It's just a hill-get over it". I'm in pink and mine says-"Hills...What hills?" The Bondi did it's job just fine, kept sweat from dripping and kept hair out of my face.

Just my sister and I...courtesy of Aweise.

Pretty soon it was time to turn around and go back. Remember that little downhill we got? Well, naturally now it turned into an uphill!! But, even though my legs were tired, I was tired, and it was uphill, I made it all the way up that short hill without stopping-YAY!! This was our view on the way back. We totally missed the awesomeness of the view on the way in because it was behind us as we ran in.

You can see some of the many cars waiting for the lake in this shot too.

Now, downhill all the way babe!! Walked for a tiny bit to recovery from the uphill and then down we went...

Met two runners coming up...

Around the bend and done!! Up and down in under an hour (not counting taking pictures, talking, etc, at the top). Took about 35-36 minutes to get to the top (including warm-up run), took about 20 minutes to get back down. Overall, not bad, something to work from. Because of course, now that we killed the beast, it will be to the top everytime emoticon.

Great job!

"I meant what I said and I said what I meant....."
Oops. Wrong book. Right sentiment.
You did what you said you were going to do, WHEN you said you were going to do it. That in its self is impressive. The fact that it was running up a hill.....
Sounds like it was kind of fun too. Who knew?

Congratulations on reaching a personal goal.

First day of school...

Monday, August 23, 2010

Today 2/3 of my kids went back to school.

Hopefully, right this minute they are learning something and having fun doing it! The house is sooo quiet. I still have one at home, but it is so peaceful right now.

This week will be all about getting our new routine down. We are expecting some of our hottest weather yet this week. Once it cools down we'll start walking a couple times a week for a little extra exercise.

Well, since the house is nearly empty, it is the perfect time to accomplish something :)! Have a great week everyone!

Shoes and hills...(quite a few pics)

Saturday, August 21, 2010

First, got my new running shoes! Kristina, you were right, I overpronate! I got Asics motion control running shoes-love them. I am still getting used to them, but they are good shoes. They aren't clunky, which is VERY good, but they are a little on the heavy side. The difference today was immediately noticeable. I made it pretty much all the way through my first mile before feeling ANY stiffness in my shins and even then it was very mild. Awesome!! Picture of them coming up...

So, the new shoes were tested out on our hill run on the beast. One, small, tiny part of a giant hill that my sister christened "the Beast". We started while it was still dark and somewhat cool. My sister and I were joined today by another Sparker (AWEISE) so that was fun. Here are some pictures...

This is taken near the bottom of the hill. The blue shirt is my sister, the pink shirt is AWEISE.

This is looking down the hill...the others are standing near the point where I turn around and head back up the hill...

I'm headed back up again...If you look between their faces at the bushes behind them, that is roughly the spot on the hill where I turn around and go back down.

There is one of the new shoes. There is a spot on the curb where the asphalt is kind of torn up, there is a big gouge in the curb. I can see the gouge from the bottom and this is what I use as my turn around point at the top. Call it superstition or OCD or whatever, but I always touch the spot with my toe before I turn around. It probably falls under the category of OCD since I have a similar habit in other locations. Next time I do the hill I'll be running right past this spot and heading all the way to the top. I'll probably still have to give it a toe touch as I pass =).

Okay, so, look closely here...see the little white rectangle near the middle/top of the hill? That is an R.V. heading up the road to the lake. That is where I am headed in two weeks. The road curves at the far left of the hill and keeps going up a bit more. two weeks, wish me luck. I'll take my camera again and show you what it looks like from up there. Good thing I'll have my new shoes to help me get there.

Move Along

Thursday, August 19, 2010

It was supposed to be an easy 3 mile run this a..m., it wasn't. It was HOT this morning and a bit humid and all around yucky. It was probably only in the mid 70s or so, but when you are running in the dark that its hot. and it was a bit more humid this morning than we are used to. I am still having mild shin problems. The first mile is always bad and right now I ALWAYS have to stop and stretch again. It is a little annoying, but after the second stretch I usually am fine and can start running for real. I'm supposed to go get my new shoes on Saturday, but I might have to justify two trips out of town so that I can have the new shoes when I tackle our hill again on Saturday. The question is how do I entertain 3 kids while I shoe shop alone...hmm I've got some time to work on that one.

So, I am into mile two today, trying to finish it and be done, but I am flagging...I'm tired, I'm hot, there are no cooling breezes, I'm sweating like a pig, but my shirt is doing a great job of not soaking it up and weighing me down. So I am ready to stop and somewhere between 2 and 2.5 when this song comes on my ipod. I love it when the ipod is intuitive and puts the right song on at the right time-Move Along by the All-American Rejects.

Speak to me, when all you got to keep is strong
Move along, move along like I know you do
And even when your hope is gone
Move along, move along just to make it through
Move along
(Go on, go on, go on, go on)

When everything is wrong we move along
(Go on, go on, go on, go on)
When everything is wrong, we move along
Along, along, along

When all you got to keep is strong
Move along, move along like I know you do
And even when your hope is gone
Move along, move along just to make it through

Okay, okay, I get it. I still didn't make it to three, but I did meet up with my sister close enough to that mark. I still need to track it, but I am calling a solid 2.5 today.

The song made me think of this ad that has been appearing in all the fitness magazines I read, especially Runner's world. There is a t.v. version too. In print the ad has a runner going through a wall of water. On the one side of the wall the runner is surrounded by words. The words vary by ad, but they are things like fear, doubt, insecurity, etc. On the other side of the wall of water the words are gone and you see just the runner. The idea being that running is the wall of water and running washes away all those stressors we encounter each day. I love this ad, it really resonates with me. Running is cathartic. It might be a huge pain some days, but it is still cathartic. The ad, by the way, is for ASICS shoes, which interestingly enough is an anagram for the latin phrase translating to "a sound mind in a sound body". Cool. I learned that just today.

I think one of the reasons this ad speaks so strongly to me is because running is one of the ways I am using to retrain my brain to that mentality. If my mind is strong my body is strong and vice versa. It is the vice versa that I'm working on! I think many of us understand that idea of using food to deal with stressors. It's how I was raised. My mom did a great job raising three kids to adulthood all by herself. She worked all day and then came home to three kids all needing her attention, time and effort. It must have been so hard for her to do that day after day and not go completely insane. She didn't have any "me time" ever!! So one of the ways she dealt with the stress of all that was through food. I can't and don't blame her for that, the effect though is that it was what I learned. That is how I dealt with stress for most of my life, still do from time to time. Stressed=eat food. Cookie Dough from the tube=family time. M&Ms=sharing somthing with my siblings. McD's=Friday night tradition. I think I am not wrong in assuming that many of us are here on Sparkpeople because of similar habits.

It isn't easy, but the key is retraining my brain. Stressed? Work out! Don't go in the kitchen!! NO!! Go outside. Feeling insecure? Don't reach for those cookies. Do yoga. Doubting yourself? Don't lift that doughnut. Lift weights.

Asics could have used Move Along as background music for their ad.

When everything is wrong we move along
(Go on, go on, go on, go on)
When everything is wrong, we move along
Along, along, along

The fun part doesn't have to be running!! If it is good for you it works! That wall of water could be representative of a good walk with your best four legged friend, a hike in the mountains, a good yoga session, a trot on the treadmill, a ride on your bike, a dip in the pool, etc. It is amazing what all this technology we have at our disposal now is teaching us. Endorphins are good for you, endorphins make you feel good, exercise releases endorphins. Endorphins are released when we are with those we love. Endorphins are released by food. No wonder some of us have such strong connections to food and stress eating. I think it is time for me to take this retraining of my brain to the next level. Time for the food diary. Not to track every bite I eat, but why I am eating it. If I can be more aware of when I am stress eating I can work harder on the retraining process by replacing the food with a short, quick exercise session. There are plenty of 10 minute programs I could use. Bust out a few crunches, or push-ups. The possibilities are ENDLESS. Time to move along....

That is so funny, when I went to visit Katie's Father and Step-mother in Las Vegas before going to the Disneyland HM, I did some running and was scheduled for a 4 miler. Of course it ended up being just over 5 since I made the wrong turn. But I started off in the morning at 99 degrees (but its a dry heat I get told) which when I finished it was almost 103. But when going it over in the map program it doesn't show elevation so when I go I hit a hill from hell. It was steep and long. Of course what comes on the Ipod but AC/DC playing the song Highway from Hell. It was perfect. I actually had to laugh.

Watch those shins as shin splints is the last thing you need.

When I struggle with my runs I remember the movie "run, fatboy, run" with Simon Pegg. He hits a wall about mile 24 in his marathon - a literal brick wall! And he spends several minutes breaking through it. My friends found it "funny" but it touched me in a different way. My DH mentioned it this morning - he says he breaks thru the wall that way too!

Glad that song kept you going, I may have to add it to my playlist

I loved your blog today. Thank you so much for sharing. And I think I'm going to make my food journal today. I've been mulling the idea for a while, but it's time. Writing down why I'm eating or why I'm craving something in particular will give me the moment to really consider if I want it, and I need that moment. I also think I need a list of substitutes, like you suggested above: feeling insecure, do push-ups; feeling bored or anxious, take a walk; feeling worthless, go for a run; feeling lonely, do yoga...and so on. Retraining the brain and body is such a wacky, multi-faceted process, so let's utilize as many tools as we can, right? - plus, being persistent in our efforts is key. Gotta keep on moving forward.
