Easter Rock and Roll (not a race-a quake)...

Easter morning was very lovely here. That bunny person visited overnight and left baskets for the kids and hid some eggs (plastic ones with jelly beans-thank goodness because hubby didn't make a map and one is still AWOL-LOL). We had a beautiful morning, had brunch at my sister's house. The kids hunted eggs and had a blast. Went to church to watch Conference (a twice yearly broadcast meeting in lieu of regular services, just happened to land on Easter this year). Came home, got the ham in the oven. Sat down to relax for a bit and then the rock and roll part of Easter started!!

I have lived in Southern California my entire life-except 3 years of college out of state and a year and a half in Germany. Earthquakes are a part of life. I'd rather face a quake than a hurricane or tornado. When they happen at night I pretend I am being rocked back to sleep. They generally don't rattle me at all and I actually seem to be tuned into whatever frequency earthquakes travel on. I can often "feel" it before anyone else in the room. I freaked out a co-worker once when we were having swarm quakes one day. I was standing at my desk and felt the next one coming and said "here we go again" and right after that the shaking started and my co-worker sat there with eyes wide, looking at me as if I had caused it!! She even asked "how did you do that?" I told her it was because I was standing and everyone else was sitting so I could feel it before them-which is true.

Tonight I felt it coming and said "is that an earthquake?" Husband hadn't felt it yet and stopped walking and felt it then. For a long time (in earthquake-ese that is 10-15 seconds) it was just the normal shaking we are used to. We called the kids into the living room and just after they came in the shaking REALLY started(that lasted less than 10 seconds) then it was back to gentle shaking until it was over. It was definately one of the strongest quakes we have had in a long time, but not the biggest I've ever been in. The quake was centered in Baja California-about 120 miles south and has been upgraded to a 7.2.

The kids stayed calm and only said "that was a little scary" after it was over. No tears, no panic. They were very good. I focused very hard on acting like it was no big deal, not letting any emotion show in my face or voice, even during the strong shaking and they fed off that. I think the pets were more adversely affected. Haven't seen the cat since it started (she is indoor only though so I'm sure she is sleeping it off under a bed somewhere) and the poor fish-his water was sloshing everywhere-thankfully not out of the tank-that was good. Dog is just a little hyper, barking at shadows. He is blaming anything that passes I guess. Nothing fell, nothing broke-nothing even tipped over, so while it felt strong it definately wasn't too bad. My older daughter said she knew it was a big earthquake because one of the easter eggs in the fridge was cracked-LOL-I think that poor egg met an earthquake during the egg hunt while the eggs were being banged together like crazy!! The kids seem to have forgotten all about it, though I'm sure they will talk about it tomorrow. Took the opportunity to remind the kids about staying away from the bookcases and the hutch (they are bolted to the wall since we are good California citizens, but you can't trust anything in a quake). Son, smarty that he is, asked why we have earthquakes so I explained the whole plates and shifting thing to him, seemed to understand. So we had a really shake 'em up kind of Easter.

Dinner wasn't affected at all!! Ham, yams, broccoli and biscuits all turned out just fine!!

    Yes - the Easter Bunny was doing such a wild bunny hop he caused an earthquake! Definitely one of the strongest I have been through - I slept through Northridge! LOL It sure made for a different kind of Easter...

    Sounds like you managed well! I live in SD, and luckily, I didn't feel a thing (I was running at Lake Murray), but my husband and kids were scared! I'm glad you were ok!

Virtual Race report, April Fool's pics and did so much this week...

Today was another virtual race-the 5K bunny hop. My final time was 47:58. Slower than last time. But, I am happy with that because it felt like I was running in oatmeal today. While I ran I comtemplated the advantages and disadvantages of increasing the intensity of your training program!! This week I really cranked out the exercise minutes. Aerobics for 60 min on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Then intense strength training on Monday and Wednesday, one more session to come later today. Then I walked to the school for pick ups most of the time this week. Several times I walked for both pick ups (one is on half day and the other on full day). Thursday, due to a) lack of planning and b) lack of sufficient vehicles, I ended up walking to the school for a THIRD time for the school's open house. Then, due to date night last night, hubby and I got in late last night and I only got 6 hours sleep so I woke up tired. So, all things considered I did pretty well!! The disadvantage of increasing the intensity of your workout is that you are a little (or a lot) more tired than usual and that decreases your speed. The advantage of increasing your intensity is that someday down the line you will be running a lot faster than you had been before you increased your intensity. That was my mantra this morning, someday this will all pay off in a faster run....

The other part of this morning was running an extra mile after the race!! Today was also the 4 mile run on our 10K training schedule!! So when I finished the 5K I just kept running!! It was a killer extra mile, but I did it!! I noticed that brain function was starting to decrease on that extra mile!! I forgot the path I was supposed to take and then trying to think of things other than just keep running was darn near impossible!! It was a great feeling to accomplish that though!! I am still using Jeff Galloway but ditched him for the most part on the last mile, choosing instead to run the trail then walk to the where the next trail picked up and then run the trail again. Worked out pretty well. I am ready for a nap though!!

Lastly, here are the cupcakes I served for April Fool's
The frosting is tinted mashed potatoes, underneath is meatloaf. My son was hillarious!! He stuck his finger in the "frosting" , tasted it and said "this frosting tastes like potatoes"!!! The adults all played off that there was something wrong with his taste. I also set up jello in drinking cups and passed it off as juice. I told him to take a sip of his juice to clear his mouth and taste it again to see if the potato taste went away. He picked up his cup and tried to drink and nothing came out!!! LOL!!!! I was busting a gut!! He pretended he hadn't been fooled. The girls then really started to get into the April Fool's game and I had spiders or ants all over me for rest of dinner. "Mommy, there's a spider on your glasses!!" Me-"Get it off, get it off I hate spiders!!!" " Girl "April Fool's!!"

Here is the sushi I served-I couldn't find green fruit roll-ups so just passed off the others as blue and red sea weed. These were hugely popular since it is fruit roll up on the outside, rice krispy treat inside and a gummy worm in the middle!! My 3 year old thinks sushi is the best invention EVER!!

It has been a busy, fun, exciting, interesting and exhausting week!! So glad I get to sleep tomorrow-oh yeah-Easter, think the kids will hold off on the baskets and goodie hunting until I want to wake up? Probably not-darn...

Went running this morning. Ditched the intervals and just stuck to a gentle, slow jog, took a break when I felt like it, kept the breaks short and then jogged some more. Just a really great, totally enjoyable run. No records to break, nobody to beat. It was really nice. Felt kind of lazy, actually, just lopping along and not trying to keep up with anyone, but it was nice-lasted just shy of 40 minutes. Saturday is another virtual race so that will be my day to speed along. Well as speedy as I get anyways.

Walked to get the girly from K-garten, then walked again to get the boy from school too. Now I have one more walk to school coming up for Open House tonight-1.33 miles three times pushing a stroller loaded with about 80 pounds worth of girls is getting a little exhausting. The k-gartener is very excited about Open House. The son has his first baseball game of the season but I will miss it. The parents have to divide and conquer in order to please everyone tonight. Grandma will go to the baseball game to take pictures and son is fine with that arrangement. We gave him a choice-mommy or grandma and he picked grandma. I am fine with that too. Tonight is probably not going to be the best they will play so I can see them do a little better next week!!

Tonight the kids will be getting meatloaf that looks like cupcakes (the frosting is tinted mashed potatoes) and dessert that looks like sushi (rice crispy treats wrapped in fruit roll "seaweed". That is my little April fool's joke on them. (Photos coming tomorrow)

It has been an exhausting day. Glad it is almost over. Just a few more hours to go. Too bad I have to wake this one up

    You are simply awesome. I had 3 boys who were all involved in sports and did the divide and conquer thing too. And I used to walk them with baby in stroller to school and back, about a mile each way. Wish I hadn't kept eating like I had walked 3 miles. LOL. What a cute pic. Aren't they heavenly when they are asleep and serene?

Another great aerobics class, now strength training, then walk to pick up daughter from school before it starts storming. Couldn't walk yesterday because son had to come home early due to a coughing fit in class. No fever, no mucus or snot, but he still had to come home, where he proceded to NOT cough for the rest of the day!! Oh well. At least it wasn't an absence. I am sure this cough is being caused by allergies or some other irritant-tis' the season.

Our gorgeous weather is taking a short hiatus to let a storm come through. Our inland area is expecting high winds, but minimal rain. The shore will get hid harder, it is supposed to last just through tomorrow so hopefully it will not interfere too much with walking to school at least once a day.

Well, off to get busy. Daughter wants to quiz me on my numbers. Right now we are doing flash cards with older daughter who is a little stuck on her numbers, 1-10 no problem but she is getting her teens and twenties mixed up. So now youger daughter needs to play the game too!!

So, in my new commitment to strength training I kind of toasted some parts of my bod yesterday. Before some of you get too worried, I did NOT overdo it, I just did enough to discover some muscles that I'd forgotten about. Started off with aerobics class which ended with a little relay race-oh my goodness, I think Gina stays awake at night dreaming up torture for us.

Let's see if I can remember the order of how this torture went. We divided into two man (oh, no men- two girl) teams and everybody started out in a seated wall squat. You know where basically you are sitting against the wall but there is no chair. Then one team member from each team sprinted to the opposite side of the gym (standard sized basketball court) and back. The remaining member had to stay in her wall squat. Then tag and the other member sprints and returns to her squat as the first member started hopping, bunny hop style across the floor and then hop/skipped back-not a real skip but a hop with a little skip attached, just because hopping was so hard. I CAN'T hop more than a couple hops-a) not co-ordinated enough and b) it is the single most aggravating motion on my tricky knee so I slowly hop/skip shuffled the entire way there and back. Back to wall squats for the non-moving partner and then the last lap-walking lunges across and high knees back. Mine Gute (My-nah Goot-ah-German for my goodness, my all time favorite phrase in normal life-my kids know when mommy says Mine Gute she is mildly ticked about something)!!! Return of Jelly Legs for the first time since that first aerobics class a couple weeks ago!! Then on to abs work before stetching and being done. Well, there again, Gina found a couple new abs exercises I hadn't done before. Put your feet together to form a diamond with your legs (basically Butterfly while lying down), hold your legs in the air, don't let them touch the ground at any point and lift and lower, lift and lower until you can't stand it any more. Now, keep your feet in that same butterfly position and put them on the ground while you do regular crunches, again until you think somebody set your abs on fire. Now just to make sure the torture is complete combine the crunches with the leg lifts (still in butterfly) until you are screaming in agony and when Gina says just 5 more you say "no way"!! I must be a masochist because I really hope she has us do those again-LOL!! Could REALLY feel those muscles working!! I have the weakest abs in the entire world to start with. They've never been strong, but 3 kids all delivered by c-section and my abs are fl-abs.

After that it was home for strength training. A fun new workout I found that has you combining three moves for each muscle grouping. For instance-chest press-you perform you basic chest press but each time you hold your hands a different way to target a slightly different section of muscle. On your first press you push up, turning your hands away and angling your bells down into a "v", next press has you turning palms in so bells touch end to end and arms are close together, last press palms face each other to the top of the press and then arms open outward to shoulder level then back up and return to start. 2 sets of 15 to 20 reps. I did about 10 to 15 reps of most of the exercises. I skipped the "Butt and Thighs" and "Abs" sections-LOL!! Today I am feeling my biceps, triceps, latissimus dorsi (side of the back), trapezius (back of shoulders up the neck and down to the middle of the back-picture a trapeziod with the point at the edge of the shoulder (top of the arm) with short sides running up neck and down back, with the spine being the third and longest side). I am also feeling my gluteus maximus, hamstrings and quads!! Lower arm and lower legs are doing just fine!! It is a great feeling though and I can't wait to do that workout again, yesterday was the first time I've done it and it was a little awkward at some points, tomorrow will be smoother and more fun! Today is yoga and push-ups. The yoga should help, especially a few downward facing dogs (my least favorite pose, but one of the best lengtheners and looseners for everything at once).

The title comes from last night...after sitting and relaxing for a bit I could feel a little stiffness settling in. I go get in bed and lay down then start shifting over to snuggle into hubby before falling asleep and as I scooched I got a cramp!! Right at the bottom of my bottom and the top of my thigh!! Weirdest place for a cramp!! I said "ouch" and hubby says "what" -"I've got a cramp" told him where and he just laughed!! I thought he loved me...oh yeah he does, part of why he loves me is because I make him laugh-darn.... :)

    I love your sense of humor. It made me laugh to read this blog. You have quite a workout going for you. Great job! And yoga is essential I'm finding to keeping your muscles loose and flexible. Downward facing dog is one of my favorites, especially before bed. It seems to just relax everything for me. I see you are into scrapbooking too. I have grandkids and that is how I got into it. Anyway, thanks for an inspiring blog.

    I love those moments. I must have done an aerobics class on my toes yesterday, because my calves were burning. Glad someone else had a hard aerobics class yesterday.
