We talking Vegan here

Friday, July 24, 2009

A friend of mine, Kim, has decided to go Vegan. Kim's lost weight doing this but she says that is just a nice bonus, that she is really doing it for health reasons. She read about the people in Okinawa, Japan who have crazy long lifespans and are very healthy and they are Vegans! So I've been looking into Vegan dishes so that I will be prepared when she comes over for our dinner and game nights. I have to admit that the recipes are actually yummy sounding! I don't think I could ever go fully Vegan though. This country girl HAS to have her side of cow now and then! So what I am considering is being a "Flexetarian" ( did you know they even had a name for this???) LOL! Basically I'm thinking of have 4-5 days of vegan/vegetarian meals and 2-3 days of meat dishes. Kim says this sounds like a great compromise. What do you think?

I've also got a couple of internet diet buddies from my PsychicSparkers Team! We're setting goals and determined to make it work!

And on that note, my plans for the weekend? Well I'm off the the unhealthiest state in the USA. That's right! Louisiana!! So I'm figuring healthy eating is out till Tuesday! (80s band reference un-intentional but funny!) And why are we going to Louisiana you ask? Well.. that's the hard part. Crystal is taking a job over there. She will be moving to Louisiana until she can find a job here in Texas. We don't like it, but a job in Louisiana is better than no job in Texas right? So we are doing what we have to do. Did I mention that recessions suck? But we have faith in ourselves and faith that this is not going to be a long term thing.

Ok so that's that. I'm off! Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Here we go again...

Thursday, July 09, 2009

106 degrees outside today. It has been in the triple digits here for a couple weeks now. Wouldn't you know it.. I finally get good shoes to go walking in and now it's so hot out that there is a public health advisory to stay indoors if at all possible. Yeah right!

Cooking is not easy right now either. If we try to cook it heats the entire house up to the point that if feels like we are living in a blast furnace! So when it comes to eating we're either having yummy raw veggie nights (good and healthy right?) or we order out or go out to eat. Pretty much anything to not have to cook. I wanted to get up this morning and cook a yummy breakfast scramble but stepped into the kitchen and said "Damn... it's already hot in here and it's still morning!" so we ended up down at Jim's (think I-Hop only with friendlier staff and better food) and had biscuits and sausage gravy. That is SO not healthy. I could have made a healthier menu choice, I know that, but I didn't even look at the menu long enough to think about that. So it's either yummy healthy raw veggies or garbage food! I am getting a tad frustrated with it too. But I don't know what to do about it too much. I'm going through SparkRecipes now trying to find recipes that require little to no cooking. I am open to suggestions for this is anyone has any!!! Or if you know of ways to cook healthy foods without burning my house down and melting me from heat.

I just filled out a questionnaire on one of my SparkTeams in hopes of finding a Weight Loss Buddy. I hope I find one!

Also, I'm changing my perspective. I'm not caring as much about how I look. Crystal thinks I'm beautiful and sexy. That should be all that matters in the looks department. What I want now it to be comfortable with myself and get healthy. I feel better when I eat better. I want to get physically healthy again so my blood pressure is lowered and the AFib is under control so I don't drop dead. I want my bones, joints and muscles to stop hurting. So, even though I know losing weight will accomplish this I can't focus on that anymore. Eating healthy and getting more active than I am now will get my insides healthy...right? So I'm going to focus on that. Good food and going and doing stuff to be active. I also just want to have fun in my life. So I'm going to try that too. When we went out the other day and I danced I felt wonderful! I was so sore the next day but I didn't care. I loved it. So I showed myself I can have fun and be active and love how it feels. So I'm gonna try to do that as often as I can. Even if it's putting on a CD at home and dancing in my bedroom all by my lonesome!

I am heading to the coast (Port Aransas) this weekend. We are leaving on Sunday and coming home Tuesday. I am gonna fish fish and fish some more!! I can't wait!!

    Same suggestions as below really.
Grill a lot. It will suck being outside to grill, but it won't heat up the house. It'll at least be cool when you come back in.
Crock pots won't heat up the kitchen like the stove will, so I would look for crock pot recipes if I were you.

Did you have fun fishing? I went to the beach this weekend, too, after seeing No Doubt and Paramore in Chicago. The beach was on Lake Michigan though. It looked like the ocean, but was freakin cold as all hell. The water temp was 70 which is cold when you are used to the Gulf of Mexico water.

I often start the crockpot over night. Soup warmed in the microwave makes a salad or a sandwich feel more like a meal. My other favorite hot weather food is hummus.

It is hot! We're 105 today!

I'll share what we do ...

Our refrig is a salad bar. Hubby and I get in the kitchen and chop up all kinds of goodies (colorful peppers, red cabbage, red onion, broccoli, cucumbers, carrots, etc.); we place these in individual containers. We also cook a large pot of black beans in the slow cooker, along with whole grain rice in the steamer. We grill or broil a lot of chicken. These are the staples in our refrigerator, along with a freezer full of other veggie favs (like corn and peas). It's very easy to make a gourmet salad in minutes and the rice/bean/corn can be heated in the microwave before topping the salad.

Sandwich wraps are also easy to make, especially when the refrig is stocked with the ready-to-go items above.

We also keep a lot of fruit on hand (apples, blueberries, red and green grapes, strawberries, blackberries, etc.); toss them in a bowl of fat free vanilla yogurt and top with a almond slices, walnut chips, grape nuts, and flax seeds. This can be a snack, or a meal depending on portion size ... consider adding a hardboiled egg for added protein.

Fresh mozz cheese is a great protein/calcium complement to the fresh veggie meal as well as grilled chicken (we cube it and serve with the veggies).

Cottage cheese (I have to add a small amount of splenda or sugar to cover the taste) with fruit.

Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich on whole wheat.

Whole wheat pita pizzas can be made in a toaster oven. Great for getting a pizza-fix, but homemade is so much better when you add veggies and grilled chicken, not to mention better portion-control!

Check out slow cooker recipes, it doesn't heat up the house the way the oven does and there are lots of great recipes!

Good luck with your goals!

Just stuff

Sunday, June 21, 2009

Well ok so I haven't been blogging like I want to, but it's kind of hard to when I don't have internet at home except on my phone with it's itty bitty keyboard. LOL so I'm revising my commitment to sya that I will blog as often as I can and that may be each day and it may not. I feel comfortable with that!

I haven't been walking everyday. But I have been doing other stuff almost each day. I walked around at Crystal's batting practice and moved my body in a neat twisty fashion while learning the correct way to bat a softball on Wednesday. On Friday I walked and walked and walked and walked some more, in the south Texas heat, while out in Dale Texas where a friend is setting for Ren. Faire. Talk about hot, sweaty and dirty! LOL Then last night I went to an outdoor concert and had a yummo salad for dinner, threw caution; sefl consciouness; and embarrassment out the window, kicked off my shoes and danced! Built up a good sweat and kicked up my cardio! It was much fun!! My body is soooo sore and it was sooo worth it!!!!

How was everyone else's Solstice (first day of summer)?

Sounds like fun. I would never get up the courage to dance. I have never fast danced. I have only slow danced like four times my whole life. The things this weight hold me back from. You would think I would do something about it. Congrats on your progress though. How have you been? The little boys still driving you crazy on the weekends? Kids...have to love them.

My Nala and an Evening walk

Monday, June 15, 2009

Yesterday was an extremely hard day. My oldest and dearest 4-legged friend, my darling Nala Kitty, passed away. She was 13 years old. We knew it was coming but no amount of preperation can really stop the pain when you love someone as much as I love her and then you lose them. We've been through so much together. She has been in my life since she was 2 weeks old. We found her covered in grease and oil, barely alive. We bottle fed her and loved her back to health. She got the name Nala because she would pounce on my daughter's Simba stuffed animal just like the character Nala in the movie The Lion King. She was a great pouncer! Back then, She would curl up on my shoulder, all snuggled in my hair, and sleep. We could talk to each other. She would sit and intently listen as I read books out loud to her. She would hug my neck, sleep on my head, sit at my shoulder or on my lap. She'd steal my food and smile about it. We'd share ice cream. She had a way of knowing when I was sick and she'd stay right by me till I was better. She helped me feel strong and could always make me smile. And I believe I did the same for her. She truly was my best friend with a Calico fur coat. I'm still heartsick and terribly sad. I miss her intensely. It will take time for the hurt to pass, she was so loved and she loved me back just as much. We had a wonderful full life together and I know I will be able to hold her again some day.

90 degrees
42% Humidity

5 minute walk
Built a sweat probably more due to the heat and humidity than anything else. Felt good though.

Since my treadmill is making funky noises I have decided to take the advice of a SP article I read and go for early morning and night time walks. Tonight was my first of these walks. I know this sounds small but I did a brisk 5 minute walk up my sidewalk and back. It was enough to kick my cardio up and get my blood moving. I think it was a good first time. I know my walks with be super short at first but they will bet longer. I don't care much for the fitness tracker on SP so I'm going to blog my walks here instead and include what the weather was like during it. I will probably do more evening walks that morning or daytime though. But we'll see!

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your furbaby. She sounds like a total joy and I'm glad you got to have the pleasure of having her in your life. Just remember, she'll be waiting for you on the other side.

I am so sorry for your loss my friend. Our furkids are just as dear to us as our best friends!

I am so glad you got out for a walk and of course it is best in the earlyu morning or later hours. Any movement is good!

It was hot today and rainy on my wy ontop work so breathing was a little difficult.

I hope the coming days make missing Nala easier,
Much love to you
