Carboloading

Friday, May 27, 2011

emoticon
With the next 3 days jammed packed with running, biking, hiking, and hopefully some golfing and swimming, I feel the need to carboload today. Actually, I feel ready for lunch and it is only 10:35. I guess I didn't eat enough breakfast. Part of me thinks I am using the carboloading as an excuse to eat moe than I should. Another part of me thinks, "Bring it on!" I guess we'll see which part wins.

One thing is certain, I will take more water for my biking. I definitely did not last weekend. I thought I'd be passing some water fountains but saw none.

It is only Wednesday but I'm looking forward to the weekend already.

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Woke up this morning and got to work wearing dress shoes with no orthotics or carbon plate and just realized that I have absolutely zero foot pain!

So that means I did not do too much exercise last weekend. And with this weekend being a long one, I have a chance to get in another longish bike ride in addition to my running. Running plans will include a longish trail run. The only race I have planned this year is the Oil Creek 50K in October which is on trails. All exercise is again scheduled to be at a somewhat easy pace. I should also have a chance on Sunday to get in some swimming, which I neglected last week.

Now if the weather forecast for Sunday and Monday holds true (low 80's and sunny), I will see another pound melt off, gain some fitness, and get a chance to try out my new clip-on sunglasses.

380 fitness minutes this weekend!

Monday, May 23, 2011

Now that I've added them up, it seems like a lot! But it didn't at the time. The higher than expected total was not unexpected after the planned 5-6 mile easy run with JOPAPGH Saturday morning ended up being 9 miles at just under 9:00 pace. The rest of the miles were easier than those.

Breakdown by exercise:

108 minutes.

92 minutes.
emoticon
180 minutes.

In retrospect, I think I might have done more than I should have since it has only been 3 weeks since I have been able to exercise again after recovering from my foot injury. On the other hand, I have no more than mild soreness in the foot today and am slightly miffed that I found no time last week to do some of this:

My exercise minutes should not really count at all: golf! Two 18s, 4 hours each. Pulling my clubs on a pull cart! Walking with moderate briskness, taking more swings than I would wish (from a golf score perspective) and bending over to pick up balls.

But: it's in the tracker. And I did put in a rousing cardio and weight sesson at the gym on Saturday as well!

Good job! Double points for not realizing how much you did till you added it up. It didn't feel like work to you. Yay!

I've got a great day planned.

Saturday, May 21, 2011

But first, let me check and make sure that lousy day I had yesterday is over. I haven't blogged recently preparing for yesterday and it was one heck of a day.

First:

I'm running at 7:30 with the group that meets at Mullins Diner. This has been part of my weekend routine for years but I have missed the past 2 months with my foot injury and a schedule conflict last week.

Second:

Since the run begins and ends at a diner, I will be eating breakfast with friends. Pittsburgh Marathon stories are on the menu today.

Third:

[picture not to scale, lol]

I promised my wife I would go bike riding with her as she is training to ride from Pittsburgh to Washington, DC with friends next month.

Fourth:

I'm going to the Pittsburgh Pirates game against the Detroit Tigers, one of 3 American League teams I like. Bucs won 10-1 last night but the Tigers have a pitcher with a 6-0 record going tonight. At worst, I'll get a Neil Walker bobblehead. We are sitting in prime foul ball territory. And I'm sure to have a good time with wife, daughter and almost son-in-law.

In between parts of those events, I will be enjoying a sunny day with temps near 80, watching the Preakness, noting that the almost SIL has cut my grass, and just possibly enjoying a couple, well earned,

Hope yinz all have good days today!

It feels great to need Monday as a rest day again.

Monday, May 16, 2011

When I am in any level of training, I always have Monday as a rest day. This is because of the great amount of fitness minutes I pack into the weekend.

After not being able to run for too many weeks and not being able to walk for exercise for maybe a month, I have had forced rest from exercise on Mondays.
emoticon

This weekend, I walked and ran a combined total of 8.4 miles on Saturday and then ran 8 miles on Sunday. I did extra on Saturday because I did not think I'd get a chance to run on Sunday. Then a flooded golf course freed my calendar and off I went.
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I considered walking 3 miles at lunchtime today but my legs are telling me that I need a rest. It feels great to feel sore from exertion rather than pain from ailments!

Great news! My knee is not 100% today after the half, so I will be laying low for a few days.
