I began this journey in June after realizing that the time had come to do something drastic about my weight and overall health. During a May weekend away with my wife on our first vacation of 2009, we visited a diner for our meal. The waitress seated us at a booth near a window with a nice view of the harbour. Much to my embarrassment, I could not fit into the booth seat. We took a seat near the entrance and waited for a table to come available.
Upon returning home, I knew it was time to take charge of my diet and lose the girth around my midsection. Luckily, in searching the web for a diet program, I came upon SparkPeople.com. Following Spark guidelines, I established a nutrition and exercise program geared to my target. Since June, I've lost over 80 pounds and established a new, maintainable lifestyle.
I've visited my doctor on my 3 month schedule and have amazed him with my success. My latest physical exam showed a tremendous change in my cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Plagued for many decades with psoriatic arthritis, pain management had been a real challenge for me. I struggled with chronic, clinical depression for the past 3 years taking prosaic and respiadone to control and modify my disorder. I'm now pleased to say, since losing 80 pounds and improving my life, I'm no longer dependant on these medications. My blood pressure is under control and that medication has been lowered in half. In total, I've gone from 8 daily medications to 3. What a change in pain management!
As of today, I've established a new maintenace program and look forward to continued success in 2010. My thanks to SparkPeople and my new friends in helping me to reach my goals. I truly look forward to continued improved health this year.

Well, I'm there. Broke the 200 pound mark and hit a weight that I haven't seen for many years. Now comes my next challenge to manage my diet and exercise to maintain a healthy living style. I'm adjusting my daily calorie intake and modifying exercise routine to sustain my new found health and fitness. Moderation remains the key to my success. Blood pressure is under control and anxiety greatly reduced. I'm certain that my physician and specialists will be very pleased with my results.
I know that daily visits to SparkPeople and continued logging into message boards will keep me motivated. I will be interested in seeing where I stand when my 6 month anniversary on SparkPeople arrives in another month on November 25th.
As always, happiness for me lies, first of all, in health.

My September 30th goal is met ahead of schedule. Weigh-in this morning @ 210.0 pounds. I've lost 62 pounds since May 25th, 8 inches in my waist, and feel great. An even bigger achievement was realized Saturday when I stopped by my local pharmacy to have my blood pressure checked and registered 116 systolic, 64 diastolic with a 62 pulse rate. Quite a change from my high hypertension readings around 140/92 back in May. Perhaps, my physician will cut back my blood pressure medication dosage when I visit him again in December.
With this goal met, I'm resetting my target today. My new target will be 200 pounds by October 31st. My challenge is to lose 10 pounds before Halloween and yes, I am registered in the SparkPeople team challenge.
Another major achievement for me, which has brought tremendous pleasure, is shooting my lowest golf score of the year at yesterday's club outing. I recorded a 76 (no mulligan) and lowered my handicap to 7.8. I'll be posting my results on The Guy's Lounge later this morning.
I owe a lot to SparkPeople.com and all the friends that I have met along the way. My weight loss, improved fitness level, and healthy lifestyle is a direct result from the support and advice received at SparkPeople.
