Stroke updateThursday, August 16, 2012
I don't know why I took so long to update. It's been 1 year and 5 months since his stroke. He is doing good. He had to learn to walk and can do really well until he gets tired and then he gets a bit wobbly. ![]()

Great News! So glad that he is doing so well, but sorry that he has had to endure further pain with the tree falling on his shoulder after the rotator cuff repair, which is a very painful surgery in itself! Prayers and hugs continue your way from me! Report Inappropriate Comment |

I'm sorry this update took so long. I'm not that good on blogging. here goes.
March 9th we thought my husband had the flu. He had a terrible headache behind his eyes and was dizzy and sick to his stomache. We did" flu things" for him.
Friday 3/10/11 he woke up the same only he couldn't walk or stand he came almost flying or falling out of the bedroom and landing on the couch.
Gave him asprin, tried to get him to eat and he threw up. He said his eyes still hurt and was so dizzy.
He was on the couch and said he was going to stay there. I left for work (had to only one working) and said I'd call him at 9. Our son works near our house and always checks on us,too.
When I called he had a hard time answering the phone and when we finally connected hesaid come home now he can't see and feels bad.
I flew home and when I got there he was still on the couch and said he couldn't stand.Dizzy.
I called my son and told him I had to get him to my car to the hospital.(I thought the road would be too bad for ambulance to get up(snowy at the time) and if they got stuck we would never get him out.
My son came and him and his friend carried him to my car. My son drove us to the hospital.
He had to keep his eyes closed all the way. Too dizzy.
We have no coverage and we never see a doctor. He had a doctor a few years ago when we had coverage and he did take him back as a patient.
The hospital checked him when we got there, he never lost any strength in his arms or legs, never had the mouth droop, never had any memory lapse (i was so crazy he had to tell me our son's number) never thought stroke.
The hospital gave hoim an antivert and blood tests and cat scans and everything was "good" I guess. The doctors and nurses were so good to us.
They said they were going to see if he could stand and of course couldn't plus he was leaning to the left preety much. they decided to admit him after awhile.
They called in a neurologist who sent him for an mri. she said she thinks he had a stroke. I was in shock. My husband wasn't, he said he thought that's what happened.
The mri showed he had a stroke in the left side of his brain in the back.(Medulla oblongata)
He was 5 days in the hospital and then I had to bring him home. They tried to get him in a facility (no names) but they wouldn't take him without insurance. They got us Home Health Care a nurse and a physical therapist came to help him. He didn't need an occupational therapist because he could use his hands and legs (just couldn't walk or sit straight)plus the vision was double.
They were wonderful, she came twice a week ad worked with him so he could learn to walk first with a walker then a cane (still has cane but does great) He did get a card so he is in therapy now twice a week. They are going to do extensive therapy soon where he will go longer. They said in 30 some years they had only one other stroke similar to his.
He can walk now pretty good until he tires and then he stumbles around a little (to his left) His eyes were very vertically challenged and for awhile would just be jumpy. They seem to be coming together more (although his vision did get worse the doctor said) his left side of his face (especially his eye) is numbish his eye does hurt him at times. He said it feels like his left side of his face is like a charred piece of wood.
His right side of his body (from the neck down to his foot) this includes the groin area, is numb to the touch. He can't tell if he is holding hot or cold in his right hand His voice is raspy but he could always talk and his right arm to his hand always feels ice cold to him even though it is hot to touch.
He is recovering quickly, even at the hospital he could find center when they told him he was leaning and would walk with us supporting him. His eyes are the worst thing and we keep praying they will get better, too.
His one therapist that is studing the brain and stokes said that people don't usually recover when it's the Medula. Forgive Me, I don't do well with medical terms and things like that.
BUT!! This is it so far.
I bet you all are sorry you asked for an up date. :-)
We hope you will still keep him in your prayers,we sure do need them.
I'll let you know when he's all better.
Love you all.

My prayers are with you both, and I know this is taking its toll on both of you in its own individual way. The power of prayer is great, and he is recovering little by little as time passes. It is wonderful that he has made such great progress, though he still has a stretch to go yet. Many blessings. Report Inappropriate Comment |

So sorry to hear about your husband. My husband just came home from the hospital as well. He had major surgery and was n the hospital for a week. He's doing find, but has a feeding tube in his stomach and will have it for about 6 to 8 weeks. He had the lower part of his esophagus and the part of the stomach connected to it removed. Anyway, just wanted you to know you're not alone. Our prayers for your husband's complete recovery. Report Inappropriate Comment |
