Why I Still Exercise

Friday, June 12, 2009

You know, once you've lost a lot of weight it can be really easy to get complacent and end up going back up the scale, and up the path to obesity. It had happened to me more times than I can count. I'd lose weight, stay that weight for a short time, then quickly gain it all back plus some!

When I lost my 150 pounds, (read the story here), fittothefinish.com I knew I didn't want to go back to living the fat life. And fortunately, it's been twelve years now since I lost my weight and I haven't gained weight (except during pregnancies) since then!

People ask me why I still exercise even after maintaining for all these years. I explain that while I was fat exercise was something I hated and swore I'd never do. As I was losing weight, I forced myself to exercise, and to my surprise, found I actually enjoyed it. Now that feeling didn't come overnight - it took several months, but it did come.

Today, I still exercise for three reasons:

1) It allows me to eat more food (which I love)
2) Keeps me in shape
3) I really like it and miss it, if for some reason I'm unable to exercise

Who knew? If you are in process of losing your weight, I'd encourage you to always push for the next level of fitness by increasing your exercise goals. For me, exercise is the magic bullet of weight loss. Sure you can lose weight without exercising, but it's easier to lose it with exercise. By incorporating exercise into your daily routine, you may find, as I did, that you actually like it!

Legacies We Leave

Thursday, June 11, 2009

I posted these thoughts in more detail on my blog at www.fittothefinish.com/blog , but I thought it would be nice to share some of it here.

You know there are a lot of things we will leave behind when we finally exit this world, and one thing I hope and pray to leave behind is the legacy of the benefits of living a good, healthy lifestyle. Over and over throughout my obese years I knew I was setting a bad example for my children, but I couldn't seem to stop eating candy and cookies all the time.

When I finally got serious about my weight loss one thing I was happy about was that I was finally showing my children that we can control our desires and be healthier physically and emotionally.

That's my thought for today - live healthy for YOU, and for future generations.
