Happy, Healthy New Year!

Friday, January 01, 2010

I didn't wait until today to work on a healthier me, but since many people do wait until NY's Day, let's challenge each other to do our best to be healthier this year. Leaving that which is behind (bad habits, multiple slip-ups), let's press forward towards living better.

As late as 11:00 last night we were forecast to get rain/freezing rain turning to snow starting EARLY this morning. Turns out (thankfully!) the precip is all snow, but that means we can't get out. PADOT (PA Dept of Trans) didn't send plows out until about 7:30 this morning, and there are about 50 accidents in our county alone.
I called the shelter and the manager answered. It took her 3-4 times as long as usual to get there, but she has been joined by one other person - only 2 of them to do all the work this a morn. She urged us to stay home - no problem there except we feel bad about not being able to help today. At least the animals will be taken care of. (We live about 35 min drive away)

Bob's using the just-fixed snow thrower now, and Darby is barking her head off at it. She's so funny. Earlier, she was barking and growling (in play) at Bob's shoes and the shovel. What a treat it is to watch her. She loves the snow and tries to eat it all.

Guess I have time to work on a couple of crafty projects today after all. emoticon I still feel bad about not being able to get to the shelter.

The Interstate (1 mi from our house) is a parking lot I hear. No big surprise there. People just don't know how to drive in this stuff - even here where it DOES snow regularly. We have a small hill in front of our house - and Bob has already been helping someone navigate it. He and a neighbor pushed and talked the driver thru getting up the short hill.

Well, y'all stay warm, cozy and dry today.

Snow , yuck, I have to walk in it 4 days a week because we dont have a car - cant afford one and hubby was laid off. At least in spring dall and summer I dont chance falling because of slick side walks and streets. Its only upposed to get to 17 today so the snow we have now will be iced over and I get to look for dry spots that arent hiding black ice., Already fell once yesterday. If I could I'd hibernate all winter. So how are your other projects coming along Nancy?

Ugh. Our snow is melting a little this morning and we may not get more but the temps are heading to single digit. Think I'd rather have the snow! Enjoy your day!!

Yay PennDOT!!!! The roads are slick out in my neck of PA as well. Fortunately, I live 6 miles from work. With decreased volumes of traffic due to schools being closed and a lot of people having or taking off for the holiday, the commute only took a little bit longer than usual. I also start work at 7 a.m. so I'm out the door before most of the traffic kicks into high gear anyway.

Enjoy the beautiful white! And Happy New Year! emoticon

Wed update

God has been most gracious to me - I am still sick with a cold, but it's not severe. I've been taking store brands of Cold Eze and DayQuill, along with aspirin if needed; as well as drinking, drinking, drinking. Also had chicken noodle soup - Campbell's Healthy Request style. I'm eager to be OVER IT already! I'm not a good patient.

Still waiting for word when our new treadmill will be delivered - probably not until next week, I think. 'S ok since I don't like to work out when I have respiratory problems. BUT! I'm getting antsy because I want to resume treadmilling! emoticon

Darby (our pit bull) pulled up a rose bush the other day. Bob re-planted it and she not only pulled it up again today, but apparently ATE IT, too! Bob couldn't find it today, and Darby does like chewing on wood. sigh. Guess we'll be getting another rose bush next spring. LOL

There was a newspaper article this morning about a female pit bull that was found dead just off a hiking trail (about 15 mi from us). She was wrapped in a blue vest which obviously had been used to carry her there. The poor doggie was sans a collar, but obviously well-taken care of - until lately. The newspaper was speculating that she had been snatched and used as bait for dog fighting as all her (many) injuries were consistent with fighting. Grrr! I'd like to get my hands on whoever did that! Our Darby is a pit bull, and you couldn't find a more loveable dog anywhere.

Have a wonderful and safe New Year's Eve tomorrow, y'all.

I hear ya on wanting that treadmill delivered! I'm so glad that you are not too sick! That's really sad about the pit bull. People that fight them are beyond detestable. My older son and wife passed a puppy on their country road between two farms a couple of days but by the third day it was still there when they left for work so my dil called to see if we could go get it and put it in their dog pen. It took my hubby, the dog whisperer, a while to coax her out of the ditch where she was hiding. He finally got her with water because she was so thirsty! The fiends who dumped her left a little girl's pink purse with her! emoticon She was very young and at least mostly pit bull. After several months she's really a gorgeous girl, spayed and chipped, and very very devoted to my son. Here's Sophie's story if you are interested http://www.pointmanspage.com/2009/0

Striving to not let this cold get me down

Monday, December 28, 2009

I caught my husband's cold - he's about all over his, I'm just getting really started on mine! I'm taking aspirin for the miseries and headache, store-brand cold eze (which does help me), and striving to drink, drink, drink liquids. Also, I spent a lot of yesterday asleep.

I think I will try to do a teeny bit of housework before my shower today - the former to make me feel better mentally, and the latter to refresh my flagging physical self. I won't do too much housework - no worries there!

Good news: no plans for the rest of this week until Thursday when we are supposed to go to the animal shelter (and take our grandsons again) to work awhile. The good news for me: Tyle was helpful last week, and there are only about six kittens in the room I'm responsible for cleaning - all of which will mean less time to do the work.

Time to either get started, or go back to bed. emoticon

My DH brought home something from work and we have both been down. He got sick on Christmas Eve day and me on Christmas night. Like you we have slept a lot and are not eating or drinking much. We ran all of the kids off the day after Christmas and I don't blame them for going. I sure hope that they won't get this, too. I hope that you get to feeling better soon. I am just doing a little here and there!

Hope you will feel better fast! GospelClown is right about cutting back on dairy. My doctor prefers we eliminate all dairy plus concentrated frozen orange juice when we get a cold! You know the rest...lots of water/liquids and rest. emoticon

Sniff, sniffle, sneeze

Sunday, December 27, 2009

As hard as I tried to not do it, I managed to catch my husband's cold. Nuts!

I'm taking aspirin for the miseries and headache, and continuing extra Vit C to help my body heal. Haven't decided whether or not to exercise at all today. May give myself the whole day off.

I'm planning to watch my nutrition intake, though. In fact, it's about time for a snack. Mmmm, fat-free yogurt sounds good. Maybe with a piece of whole wheat toast sans butter.

Y'all take care of yourselves out there!

We usually cut way back on the dairy products during a mucusy cold. I don't know if that is fact or fiction, but that was one of the things mom always did for us.
