Another muscle that needs building is our mental endurance muscle. How do you strengthen a mental muscle? What scientific evidence is out there that teaches the principles of 'Try try again"?

My feeling is SparkPeople's approach of setting small goals is one way to do this. I've found that the "cycle of set a goal - achieve a goal - feel good about it" is one smart way to condition the tenacity muscles. Perhaps it's how we lay down new neural pathways in our minds to remain consistent more easily.

What are your thoughts? Rough Patches

Thursday, June 28, 2012

The journey to healthy habits is not a smooth one. It is loaded with pitfalls, detours, setbacks, as we all know.

We're doing great until...
- we get sick
- we injure ourselves
- work happens
- family happens
- love happens
- tragedy strikes
- we fall off the band wagon
- we lose interest
- we lose hope

... and then we find ourselves discouraged in not only the areas listed above, but with our lack of consistency or success in our health and fitness goals.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS on how to hardwire our minds and bodies that healthy eating and exercise as a stress reliever, not not a stress adder?

Mini- Reset

Friday, June 22, 2012

In one of my past blogs, I remarked about seeing my endurance patterns displayed in some of the Spark Reports.

I have been waiting for the beginning signs of those patterns to manifest, and sure enough they arrived. It made me very nervous at first, you can bet on that.

The behaviors were very small in the past few days-
emoticonBreakfast has been later and later in the day. Where it used to be at 8:30, it was at 10:30 today.
emoticon My water consumption went down because I drank small amounts of coffee first thing in the morning (hence the later lunch).
emoticon I lost interest in the last two work outs
emoticon The amount of vegetables dropped
emoticon I stopped walking at lunch

I'm actually glad this happened. I am going to view this as an opportunity to have a mini-reset today.
emoticon My caloric intake is still on pace
emoticon I do not have a desire to 'pig out' or blow my calories
emoticon My husband is still supportive
emoticon My weight did not fluctuate or increase
emoticon I resisted my raw sugar cravings (I was literraly crawling under my own skin and twitching)
emoticon I am going to take this time to celebrate my past success over the past two months
emoticon I am going to explore new fitness options
emoticon I am going to read my past blogs
emoticon I am going to find inspiration in others.

So there you have it- recognizing the signs early so that I don't fall off the wagon or lose motivation.

Marketing Tactics of Food

Thursday, June 21, 2012

My recent journey to lose about 20 pounds has made me acutely aware at just how insidious the ploy is to get Americans to overconsume. Here is my interpretation of some of the commercials I've seen in recent months.

THIS FOOD WILL MAKE YOUR FRIENDS LIKE YOU- THIS FOOD WILL MAKE YOU POPULAR- THIS FOOD WILL MAKE YOUR KIDS THINK YOU'RE GREAT
Watch the commercials for Pizza Bites, Sunny Delight. When the kids' friends see that he has these items, they light up and literrally pat the kid on the back. The mom is the hero.

WITHOUT THIS FOOD, YOU WILL FAIL AT YOUR GOAL
THIS FOOD BRINGS YOUR FAMILY TOGETHER
Gatoraide commercials. Enough said.
Pasta commercials depicting a family celebration, The entire family is around the table looking sad and disconnected- that is until that right pasta sauce arrives. The celebration commences and they are laughing, talking, hugging.

IT'S NOT ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU NEED, IT'S ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU CAN GET FOR YOUR DOLLAR. THE BIGGER THE BETTER
Giant serving sizes in fries, burgers, drinks, pizzas, salads, desserts

THIS FOOD DEFINES YOUR SOCIAL STATUS/WILL MAKE PEOPLE ADMIRE YOU
Look at the commercials for certain alcohols. They tie it right to image, class, and admiration. Dos Equis, Heineken

THIS FOOD IS NEEDED TO HELP YOU RELAX/IS SENSUALLY STIMULATING
Dove Chocolate- a woman slips into rapture upon eating a piece
Carl's Jr. commercials that show hot chicks consuming burgers passionately.

WE ARE NOT CAPABLE OF MAKING DELICIOUS, NUTRITIOUS MEALS
Frozen food commercials that show the women sitting around the lunch table, discontent with their home-made meals, while another boasts about the delicious (and salt laden) lean cuisine she purchased.

There are lots more examples to be sure. With the billons of dollars in marketing spent each year that tries to get us to consume more and more food, it's no wonder the obesity levels are sky-rocketing, and we equate responsible eating with denial, and not what it should be- our REWARD.

I truly believe that one of the keys to successful weight loss is rooted in how we communicate to ourselves about healthy eating; that it must start there before we can hope to have PERMANENT, LASTING results.

Love this blog. So true that like most marketing they are trying to make us feel less than worthy so we will buy whatever they tell us we will need to be pretty, popular, sexy, successful etc.

Renewal

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Today will be about going back to basics.

Back to ensuring I drink enough water. Wearing my pedometer. Walking at lunch today. Workout in the evening.
