Body's Adaptation

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

I thought I'd try out a 'free day' with food, where I wasn't too concerned about calories. While I have to admit, it all tasted very good- the Strawberry Shortcake (the BEST home-made cake that a friend made), a cheeseburger AND a hotdog, AND chips and salsa... I have to admit, I felt terrible later that night, and those feelings were just NOT worth it. . emoticon

What is it about the body that changes so quickly? This was the first time I've had beef in about three weeks, and I had NIGHTMARES, and did not have a restful sleep. Pretty interesting from a purely biological standbpoint

I don't have any problems with sleep because of the food that I eat but I do feel bad if I eat junk. Sometimes I start to eat it and it doesn't taste like I was expecting and I wish that I was having something else.

Three weeks. Six and half pounds.

My success is attributed to three big changes in my diet. You won't be surprised- you've heard it a million times....

Proper portions
Very little dairy
Nothing deep fried
Serious reduction in sugar
Serious reduction in salt

Exactly right, but I would add adequate protein too

Funny how it always comes back to the basics of eating better, eating what our body needs, and eating in proper (moderate) amounts.

In just a few short weeks, I have begun to reap the benefits of focusing on food intake, and not calories burned in the gym.

Last year, I literally ran myself silly, and went to the gym six days a week, taking serious cardio classes and would lose about a half pound per week. It took 12 weeks to lose six pounds. I didn't focus too much on my diet, hitting around 2,000 calories per day.

This time, I am working out about four times per week, taking classes I enjoy and pushing really hard every so often, and I am losing about a pound and a half per week. Calories are between 1400 - 1700 as suggested by my nutrition tracker, and wow, what a difference.

Knock on wood that this trend continues!

It's so true - exercise has many many benefits and is a HELP in losing weight, but exercise alone cannot overcome excessive eating. In the time it takes to burn 1000 calories, we could easily eat many times that.

if you saw the show, what did you think if it?

The show was really informative but scary! Culture definitely must change, never thought about gaining weight due to "the food environment" It's part of the story too, along with personal responsibility. Hope lots of parents watch and take it to heart and avoid "kid food" They WILL eat what you give them once they get used to it, they can't drive themselves to McDonalds and they don't usually have any of their own money.

Skipped the work out today. Never fear, still time left in the week to ensure a 5-Day work out.

Lesson: not everytyhing goes to plan- that doesn't mean you throw in the towel or take on a poor attitude.
