Skip this one, it's depressing

Thursday, November 06, 2008

My job search and the way my current boss is handling lay offs makes me want to crawl into bed with some krispy kremes and stay there for the next week.
I don't give into defeat, but that's how I feel right now.
That's all, sorry I haven't responded to everyone yet. I'll get to it, all my energy right now is going toward my job search and i feel weary.
I'll try to make my next post more upbeat since this is a downer.

Maintenance so far

Wednesday, November 05, 2008

Alright, here's a little recap:
Friday was a total buffet/gorgefest at work, followed by lots of drinking. Saturday I didn't go overboard on food, but my choices weren't exactly healthy. Sunday I got back into the swing of things big time with healthy meals (including some of the best fish tacos to date!!) I also did an outdoor run, ST, a mile walk with my bf AND a ton of cleaning. I burned over 700 cals, woohoo!!

On sunday I made a delicious pumpkin lentil soup.
Here's the recipe, in case anyone is interested:
Over medium heat in a large saucepan sautee 1 chopped onion with 1 tablespoon olive oil and seasonings (ginger, cumin, cayenne pepper) for about 3 minutes. Add chopped butternut squash (I used slightly more than half of a frozen package) and 1 can pumpkin (unsweetened) and cook on medium heat for approx. 7 minutes. Add 12 ounces of vegetable broth and increase heat to high to bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to low and let simmer, covered, for 10 minutes. Add 1/2 or 3/4 cup red lentils and let simmer for an additional 7 minutes. Taste and add more seasoning if desired. In batches, puree soup in a blender or food processor and reheat if necessary. Voila, simple and delicious :-)

Yesterday was a decent day, workout-wise. Out of excitement for Obama's win I jumped on the treadmill and did 3.5 miles of intervals. I'm so happy about the presidential election votes, I seriously cried yesterday - while laughing, it was a huge mixture of emotions. On the downside, I'm sad that Prop 8 looks like it will be passed (unless there's an overwhelming count of No's from the absentee ballots...) Voting to take away the rights of others is so backward and it makes me cringe that as a nation we don't seem to learn from the past. Civil rights battles shouldn't still need to be battles, but since it's the case, I'm willing to fight ;-)

Alright, that's all I've got to update. I'm planning on doing 30 minutes of hills tonight, as well as ST. Bikram tomorrow and a long run on saturday.

The soup sounds really, really good...thanks for sharing the recipe!

Glad to see you're still going fierce with the exercise, and I was emotional about Obama's win, too!! (But I get emotional about everything.)

Sorry for the dumb question, but were you talking about taking away gay marriage in California? I live in Massachusetts where it's legal...I have been to a beautiful, legal gay wedding here. (My boyfriend works with a few gay married men at his architectural firm.) I cannot for the life of me figure out why anyone would want to stop a loving couple from having the right to marry. What a step backwards.

Day ?? (not sure...)

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

So this 28 day plan is definitely taking me longer than 28 days. I keep taking breaks whereas the plan calls for 6 workouts per week. Oops...
Ok, I must confess that this weekend was awful. Well, actually it was really fun, but it was awful for my diet. I haven't even stepped on a scale, which is very unusual for me. I also didn't get back on track on monday like I normally do, which is the kiss of death. Except for 1 day of ST, I haven't worked out in far too long...
Ok, so now I've been honest with everyone, and I feel a lil, tiny bit better ;-)
Now that the holidays are here, I'm going into maintenance mode. This weekend/week was a major scare for me, because last year I gained 6lbs over the holidays and it's taken me this entire year to lose about 10lbs. To be honest, I'm completely comfortable with my body right now. But I find it devastating if I gain 2lbs, I feel like a fat pig and it totally changes how I feel about myself. On the bright side, I weigh approximately 2-3lbs less than I did going into the holidays last year, so I'm a winner, yay! I'm going to stop while I'm ahead and pick back up in 2009.
My new goals are:
*maintain my weight at or under 130
*eat more protein
*continue training for the half marathon
*limit fast food to 2x per month

Alright, so it's simple and will hopefully be effective because I do not want to waste time undoing holiday damage next year.

This could be the big break your body needs! Sometimes we stress too much about the details and forget about the big picture!

I wish I could just FLIP into maintenance mode, but I have to wait until the end of April 2009! I'm already comitted to this ONE YEAR PLAN!!!

I love your stradegy though, it will work out great for you!

I agree with everyone're a genius for switching into maintenance mode for the holidays. The half-marathon training will definitely keep you in shape too!

What a great and realistic plan. I may have to copy you. Maintain weight over the holidays, get back to the losing in 2009. Thats a good goal.

I am the same way as you right now - happy with my body but if I see that number go up by 1-2 lbs on the scale it just changes. Which is stupid bc 2 lbs could be water retention and doesn't suddenly make me look fat. UGH the woes of being a woman, haha.

Keep up that running and you'll maintain and maybe even lose :)

How very realistic of you to switch to maintanence for the holiday season!! I'm curious, are you still going to track calories during this period? What range will you aim for?

Did I know you were doing a half marathon? If I did, I forgot. Congrats - that's some hard work!! Have you ever done one before? When is it? How much running do you do to train?

OK, that's a lot of questions...sorry about that! I didn't mean to give you extra work! :)

Day 10, quick check in

Thursday, October 23, 2008

Yesterday went very well. I fit in my cardio and ST, just as planned. I also ate really low, around 1200, which is abnormal for me...

Today I walked almost 1.5 miles on my lunch break, but then I ate mexican food instead of my planned soup. I should come in a little under 1800 cals though, which is in range. I was gonna go to yoga tonight, but I moved that to the weekend so I'm thinking i'll pick up a gossip mag and spend an hour on the elliptical. It's been awhile since I've done a long cardio workout.

Are you working out at the gym? I find it best to break up my work out with time on the stair climber/treadmill/elliptical/bike when at the gym. I get too bored doing one for an hour. emoticon

Day 9

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

This morning got off to a lovely start {sarcasm}. I woke up a little before 5 to find out that my bf still wasn't back from San Diego (where he went to finish cleaning his apartment so he could get his deposit back). It was very dark and foggy outside and I was certain he had died in a car crash. I was calling every 2 minutes and he didn't pick up. And to make matters worse, he had borrowed my car because it gets better gas mileage, but he took his car keys too! So I was stranded with no way to get to work. He finally picked up his phone at 7 and I was almost an hour late to work, but my boss didn't seem to care and I suppose it all worked out.

Yesterday was supposed to be a ST day but I was exhausted and fell asleep early. I planned on working out this morning, but I was kinda distraught and it didn't happen. Oh well, tonight I'll do cardio (30 min of hills on the treadmill) and chest/back/abs ST and be back on track. Cals yesterday were low (under 1500).

On another note, I've decided my cat needs to lose weight. He's a handsome fatty, but I want him to live forever and being overweight probably won't achieve that. I've already cut down on how much food he eats to 1 tbsp. of tuna per day, and then I leave the dry food out. I'm thinking about getting a dispenser so that he can't just munch all day long. Any suggestions would be useful. The past two nights I've made a point of making him chase things for as long as I can hold his interest.

Alright, I'm done rambling for the day ;-)

Hi, Nina. I just noticed your blog. Making him move means a lot for his weight loss. But I wouldn't buy a food dispenser. We have one, but only use it when we leave the appartment for an entire day or more. First of all: a good food dispenser is usually made for both cats and dogs. That makes one serving to be huge (on ours, the smallest is 1/2 cup dry food I think). Secondly: after we install it, our cat sleeps next to it all day long. She does not move from there at all; it's like we don't exist and that's not nice. We only feed her dry food (serving size according to the info on the package, but a little less) and a Tbs or so of can food in the evening (as a treat, since she loves can food). And our cat is a little overweight. The vet recommended "light food" (weight management control food) and more exercise. I think the exercise part is what's missing for our Fiona :)

Oh man, you sound like me with convincing yourself the bf has died in a car accident. I tend to think somewhat crazy things like that from time to time and call his phone 100 times and leave a ton of msgs and texts. Well, I am glad he is ok and that things worked out alright.

Hope you get your workouts in tonight! My ST session got cut short by 10-15 minutes bc my friend showed up early for our run. Oh well, I still did 60+ mins of exercise today. I'll just add in some more ST tomorrow!

It is hard to have a cat "on a diet". Mine would just BEG for food, and I would not find that pleasant. My cat, MR. WILKS just comes and STARES, and I know his bowl is empty.
It might be good to buy the "older cat" formula food, as I think it is lower calorie.
I did see on YouTube a guy had made a "cat wheel" and his cats exercised on it, but I doubt my lazy bunch would do it more than a day, and then it would become a CLOSE RACK. emoticon
