Continuation of Overboard . . .

Friday, June 29, 2012

Ok ladies, now that TCHNCRFT has explained how to change the calorie limits and Julz helped me get this report. Now what? What do I change the daily range to? Tch? Julz? Anybody? :/

Ok. I figured it out! :) When I first started, I listed a pretty much sedentary lifestyle when I should have listed what I INTENDED to do! I couldn't figure out how to go back and change that, so I went to a couple other sites and put in my new lifestyle and got a more accurate idea of what I should be consuming with all the extra activity. So I changed my calories needed to 1300 - 1600 for as long as I maintain my new fitness level, I should continue to lose .5 - 2lbs per week. :) Thank you to everyone for your helpful comments and feedback! I new I could count on you! :)

Hey Jackie, I think I understood what you are supposed to do and explained it on your original overboard blog. Hope it helps, Jackie

Me too! I am also trying to tone up as well! I just don't want to sabotage my efforts by not eating enough. I feel full, I am losing weight (slowly). I was just concerned about the message that keeps popping up. Thanks for your input! :)

DESERTJULZ 6/29/2012 7:44PM

Well, I'm not sure that I am qualified to answer. We're different people, different height, size, different activity levels. What I can tell you is that my calories eaten typically falls really close to the amount of calories I would burn if I were totally inactive, in other words, near the top of the "honey" brown bars on your chart. I've lost around 11 pounds since joining SP, which is a bit over 5 lbs a month. However, my total weight loss goal was only 15-17 pounds. The main reason I'm here is to inspire me to take exercise very, very seriously, because I've started the decline toward osteoporosis and my doc believes I can rebuild the minor bone-loss that I've experienced before it actually becomes detrimental to my life/health.

Basically, I'm relying on my exercise to generate the calorie-burn I need to actually lose weight, and likewise relying on the calories I do eat to maintain my normal, non-exercise, needs.

Overboard?

Friday, June 29, 2012

Ok, so once again I need my spark peeps to explain something to me! I am currently exercising daily, predominantly the gym on M-W-F and usually Saturdays too! And only walking on T-TH and Sunday. But when I add any additional exercise (like today, because I stuffed myself full of 1,066 calories at the buffet - even though it was lunch AND dinner) to my regular fitness tracker, it gives me the following message.

"The number of calories you should eat to manage your weight depends on many factors, including how many calories you burn through exercise. It may seem counterintuitive, but eating too little while burning too much can actually hurt your weight-management goals and the outcome of your fitness program. If you are consistently burning more calories than recommended here, please update your fitness settings as soon as possible. This may adjust your calorie ranges (if necessary) so you can reach your goals in a timely and healthy manner."

Problem is, I cannot change my calorie intake it is set automatically by current weight and goal to lose! I only burned 683 calories in fitness today but I ate 1,523 (27 calories under my suggested range) ?? I am totally confused! :/ If I could update my calories needed based on calories burned, I would. Anybody know what the problem is here? I DO NOT want to do less exercise. :( I am trying to get fit and train for the upcoming 5K. Help!

I keep getting this message, also. I ignore it because I figure that as long as I am losing and feeling good, I'm fine. However, what I think it means is that your calories have been figured out based on the amount of exercise you put into sparks fitness on the start page. If you are doing more exercise than you originally put in there, you are supposed to change it so it has an accurate look at how much exercise you plan to do. Then it will adjust your calorie suggestions accurately.

I wish I had and answer... me personally I went in and changed my calorie intake to 1200-1500 because it suggested a much higher when I dropped my 10 pounds...... it did it based on my weight loss and exercises as well.... but I knew I was losing at the lower range.

Good luck... I think most important is to listen to your body and make sure you are feeling good and medically are okay... and feel fueled.

I've gotten that message myself as well. I ignore it now. SP has suggested 1550-1900 for me now that I have amped up my cardio to 30 mins for 5 days. I struggle at times to make this range. I still average weight loss about 1 pound per week.

Also CONGRATS CONGRATS on your awesome calorie burning regime emoticon

Spark people suggests 1200 - 1550 Julz. But like I said, I keep getting that message when I log my fitness. :/ I am losing weight (1-2 lbs on average per week) and the last time I lost 30 lbs, I only ate between 1200-1400 (but I wasn't going to the gym 3-4 times per week). I guess I will just ignore the message as long as I continue to lose regularly. :) Thanks for your support! :)

Seems like a lot to me, too. How many did SparkPeople calculate for you as a daily goal?

Report Inappropriate Comment
HONEYPOT319 6/29/2012 7:18PM

According to fitness magazine (online) I need the following:

Your current calorie needs are 2773 per day.
The number of calories consumed should be broken down as follows:
Carbohydrates: 1248 - 1802 carb calories, or 45-65% of daily intake
Protein: 277 - 971 protein calories, or 10-35% of daily intake
Fat: 555 - 971 fat calories, or 20-35% of daily intake

Seems a bit much to me!! :(

IMPORTANT! Calories burned through exercise are NOT the only calories you are burning! You burn calories sleeping, believe it or not!, just at a much lower rate than exercising. SP offers a great report that shows your TOTAL (including normal body function) calories burned vs. calories eaten. This report will help you understand.

Click on "My Trackers" scroll down to "Reports" and look at the one titled "Calorie Differential Over Time." It's important to pick the "over time," as it is a very inaccurate assessment on a day by day basis, but averages out over time. Let me know if this helps answer your most excellent question!

TCHNCRFT 6/29/2012 6:14PM

First off, emoticon on burning all those calories through exercise. I don't come anywhere near that each day.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding your question correctly, but you can change your calorie range by clicking on "My Nutrition" under Trackers. Right near the picture of the water glass, click on "Tracker Options." There's a drop-down menu. Click on "Change Diet Settings."
You'll come to a screen where you can edit your calorie range and save it.

Hope this helps.

5K? Have I lost my mind?!!

Friday, June 29, 2012

Friday! Friday! Yay! Last day (1/2 day) of work before vacation! I am ready! Although we do not actually leave for Orlando till Tuesday, I am geared up and have my exercise (on top of all the walking) planned. Snacks planned! My child WILL NOT persuade me away from my healthy diet!! I have vowed to behave on this vacation. :)

Ok, so at the urging of a friend I signed baby girl and I up for a 5K walk/run in August! Temporary insanity as I have never done any kind of walk/run race! Need help from my spark pals! As most of you know, I do a good bit of walking and the treadmill at the gym, but what kind of training should I be doing to prepare for this 5K thing?!! HELP!!

I hope all my spark friends have a super rockin' Friday! :)

Awesome! I'm doing the virtual walking 5k on SP. I'm currently in the week 2 training and today's goal was walk 1.75 miles. I actually went a bit over when I used the mapper, it was 1.81 miles!

Join the Spark People 5K Rookie Running Program! I will invite you. I started it at the end of winter and I have never run before and hated running in high school even. And I didn't think I could do it. But the program starts you off easy and each week adds a bit more jogging and less walking and I am just starting the last week of the program now, and each week I was surprised that I could do what it asked. So it works!!!!! I have signed up for the sparkpeople 5K virtual walk/run which is the last week of July. (Don't be too intimidated, even in the last week of the program, you still get little minute rest periods) You can do it! Even if you don't think you can, the program works. Honest.

The 5K your way is a really good way to build up your stamina. I've done two 5K and and am doing the program in the hopes of bettering my time on my next one Labor Day weekend. The first time it took me almost 1 1/2 hours! The second one, 66 minutes. Don't sweat it, seriously. It sounds way more daunting than it really is. It will be hard, you will have to push yourself, but you CAN do it!! emoticon

Oh and... my oldest will be 20 in exactly a month... so yep... feeling OLD. *LOL* especially today.

Sparky Thursday!

Thursday, June 28, 2012

Good morning my spark friends! Tropical storm Debby has gone! Yay! No flooding here. It dried up pretty quick. Expecting highs in th upper 80s today. Looks like it will be super hot for vacation next week. Going to have to drink lots of water to stay hydrated as there is going to be tons of walking at the Disney theme parks! :) I can't wait!

Ok, I know I shouldn't have done it, because I will probably just be disappointed come Saturday at weigh-in if I weigh in higher, but I couldn't resist sneaking a peak at my weight. I only weigh once a week usually because of the fluctuation in weight due to water. I was feeling thinner (if you know what I mean) so I just thought that I would check it out. According to my glorious scale, I have lost three pounds this week! :) I guess I will just have to wait and see if the weight is the same come weigh-in day!

It going to be a great day today! I hope that all my fellow sparkers have a marvelous Thursday! :)

Sometimes I can't resist a "peak" either. Some mornings you just "feel" like you're lighter.

It's hot here in St Louis (my boss just came in and said her car thermometer said 108). emoticon Not a good day to be out walking around.

Glad Debby didn't put a dent in your vacation plans. You'll have a great time at Disney (everyone gets to be a kid there). emoticon

Wear some good walking shoes and keep yourself hydrated. emoticon

(BTW - you're doing a great job!)

You're doing so great. Congratulations on those 3 pounds. Hopefully they will stay gone. Talking about hot, we are expecting 103 degrees on Friday and 105 degrees on Saturday & Sunday. Yuck!! Too, too hot for NC. I have never been to Disney. I wish you a wonderful vacation.

You gave in and weighed yourself? What! Does this mean that you're not going to undermine yourself on Friday? Is Friday a low salt day? Yes, this is how I obsess when I weigh myself before my weigh-in day. It's just so tempting. How could I not weigh myself on the day I realized that I needed to go to the next size DOWN?

You have a marvelous Thursday, too.
