I Believe ...

Where's the Fruit?

One of the reasons why so many Americans don't eat enough fruit is because it's hard to do. Two to three cups of fruit per day, which the Food Pyramid recommends, can be a challenge to some people, especially those who are hurried.

To complicate matters is the huge selection of foods "made with real fruit." Every body prefers real apples in their toaster pastry. Problem is, nutritionally speaking; fruit products are not whole fruit, or even mostly fruit. Some barely pass a piece of fruit on their way to being packaged. To see if you're getting real-fruit as claimed, take a look at the nutrition label and the ingredient list to see what you're actually getting in a piece of, say, strawberry fruit leather.

VEGGIES & FRUITS

It's time to incorporate extra veggies and fruits into the diet for a good kick start for the New Year!



Don't worry about robbing yourself of protein; the fact is: most vegetables and fruits contain protein.
Eating the extra veggies and fruit will also increase your fiber intake naturally and if you incorporate legumes into your diet as well, you'll get way more protein per serving than if you ate a steak plus you'll get ample fiber also.

People always want to know how to get more fiber in their diets; it's easy; eat produce, not products.

    Thanks for the awesome pictures and cool reminder to eat our fruits and veggies! Today for breakfast I made my green smoothie with spinach, banana, green apple, carrot juice, flaxseed meal, and water. Yummy and healthy. I am grateful to be a vegan, flourishing on my plant-based diet. Happy New Year!

POTLUCKS? BRING 'EM ON!

The Holiday potlucks are coming up and there will be more goodies there than you can shake a stick at, or (even in your wildest dreams) eat!


I'll share my plan that I use for just such occasions.

First is mindset. If I go to a potluck thinking...

"I wish I didn't have to go and be exposed to all that food" Then I'm not going to have very much fun and I probably won't be much fun to be around, and I'm not about to be 'the wet blanket'.

My solution: Since our brains believe every thing we tell it anyway...I just tell it (my brain) I'm not so hungry that I'd rather eat than visit, I'd rather visit.
And that's what I go for and what I do.

I deliberately try to go through the line last (maybe the biggest temptations will be gone by then anyway) and when I get there I deliberately fill my plate with vegetables (no salad for me, thanks, whoever said salad was social food! There's nothing graceful or appetizing about watching some one trying to eat a salad and talk!) and I love the fresh fruit platters! I stay away from the dessert and meat parts of the tables because that's usually where the highest calorie and more fattening foods are.

I try to make it a point to speak to everyone at the gathering. That keeps me pretty busy and I don't spend as much time eating. It's actually hard to eat and talk at the same time.

If someone asks me if I tried the _____(fill in the blank) I say, "I'll have to get it next round" (even though I know there won't be another time around) that way I don't hurt anyone's feelings, and I don't sound like I'm 'dieting' because frankly, nobody wants to hear that at a potluck.

If I bring something low cal/carb/low fat. I don't say it's diet, I say, "I'm trying out a new recipe on you, let me know what you think".


To me, potlucks are a time to gather with and visit with friends and family...not a time to fret over food. I'm not staying home just because of food! That would be pretty selfish of me. My food issues are not at potlucks; my real food issues are when I'm at home.

Potlucks? Bring 'em on!

    Great blog! I feel the same way about potlucks. I don't want to miss out on the fun just because I can't eat most of the food. I make a healthy dish that I can eat and choose from the fruit and veggie platters. You CAN be healthy and enjoy a good potluck!

    This is great advice! I do this, too, and I totally agree that the holidays are for putting people first instead of about the food. It's really about priorities, isn't it? I don't really feel like I missed out on anything when people are my highest priority.

I got this off my email, but it pretty much sums up an ordinary day for me...

Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. -
Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.

This is how it manifests:

I decide to water my garden.

As I turn on the hose in the driveway,
I look over at my car and decide it needs washing.

As I start toward the garage,
I notice mail on the porch table that
I brought up from the mail box earlier.

I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys on the table,
put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table,
and notice that the can is full.

So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage first.

But then I think,
since I'm going to be near the mailbox
when I take out the garbage anyway,
I may as well pay the bills first.

I take my check book off the table,
and see that there is only one check left.

My extra checks are in my desk in the study,
so I go inside the house to my desk where
I find the can of soda I'd been drinking.

I'm going to look for my checks,
but first I need to push the soda aside
so that I don't accidentally knock it over.

The soda is getting warm,
and I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

As I head toward the kitchen with the soda,
a vase of flowers on the counter
catches my eye - they need water.

I put the soda on the counter and
discover my reading glasses that
I've been searching for all morning.

I decide I better put them back on my desk,
but first I'm going to water the flowers.

I set the glasses back down on the counter,
fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table.

I realize that tonight when we watch TV,
I'll be looking for the remote,
but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table,
so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs,
but first I'll water the flowers...

I pour some water in the flowers,
but quite a bit of it spills on the floor.

So, I set the remote back on the table,
get some towels and wipe up the spill.

Then, I head down the hall trying to
remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day:

the car isn't washed

the bills aren't paid

there is a warm can of soda sitting on the counter

the flowers don't have enough water ,

there is still only 1 check in my check book,

I can't find the remote,

I can't find my glasses,

and I don't remember what I did with the car keys.

Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today,I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all day, and I'm really tired.

I realize this is a serious problem,
and I'll try to get some help for it and find out more about it on the Internet...
but first I'll check my e-mail...

    Well, I started out yesterday finishing a purse design and as I sat at the machine I realized that I needed some elastic.... so I headed for the kitchen drawer and that's when I got sidetracked by a few dishes that needed putting away..... as I was finishing that task I noticed my favorite coffee cup....it say's "Got Caffeine ?" on it then I realized that I hadn't had any coffee yet so I headed toward the coffee maker to get that party started....lol. Not long after that I found myself painting and redecorating the entryway to my sons bedroom. "Oh yeah" I'd better mention that it is his wife's room too..... and I am just visiting. God bless you.
