My Hubby Turns 66 on Flag Day!

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

Weíve been pure vegetarians now since January of this year and the rewards are priceless! My hubbyís blood sugars remain perfect (even though he eats goodies everyday) and my arthritis and claudication are still gone. Woohoo!

I am so excited about walking because I havenít been able to walk much at all for way over 10 years without the aid of a cane or walker so I was trying to ignore the foot and back pain (wish there was a particular diet for that!). I over did it! Now Iím wearing ugly specialty shoes and still having some foot issues and last week my back went out (but at least Iím not having the sciatica pain that usually goes with my birth defect.) Iíve been just barely getting around but thankfully am a wee bit better every day.

The good news is I can walkÖthat is, I can walk when my foot (planter fasciitis) and back (birth defect) will let me. The bad news is thereís no cure for this kind of defect, itís just a continuing progression of one vertebrae sliding off another slowly but continually. Surgery is only 50% effective and good only for up to 5 years because it doesnít keep the rest of the spine from sliding. I currently have 7 vertebrae that wreak havoc on my sciatic nerves!

Can anyone tell me where that fine line is between ďover doing itĒ and ďdoing itĒ is?

Our son is treating us to a fishing trip this weekend in honor of my hubbyís 66th Birthday and my hubby REALLY wants me to go too, so Iíve been trying to take at easy. The thing is Iím not really comfortable on boats under 325 feet in length and with less than 4 or 5 upper decks! LOL But for my hubbyís sake I will go. I donít know how that might affect my ailing back, but if it will make him happy, Iíll go. It usually takes about two weeks to recover after my back goes out. So hereís to hoping Iíll be okay for the fishing trip. AND hereís to hoping that trip doesnít mess with my back! Weíll see.

THE DOCTOR WAS AMAZED!

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

What a lovely trip to the coast! The weather was delightful even though the ocean winds were a bit nippy yet this time of year!

I got to walk barefoot in the sand on the beach as well as walk on the boardwalk for the first time in over 10 years! The relatives we seen there were surprised because we had just seen them in September of last year when I was hobbling around just like I had been for the past 10 years. They even said I looked younger, I think they meant better, but it worked for me! LOL

My hubby saw the doctor today and was amazed at how much better he was since the last time and told him, ďwhat ever you are doing, keep doing it because itís definitely working for you!Ē He had a complete physical and when the doctor checked the nerve damage in his feet, it was totally gone! Last time he seen the doctor, his skin problems were constant, today the doctor could only find a couple places where some of the problems HAD been but for the most part you would never know that he had been fighting full body skin problems for over 30 years. The neuropathy gone, the arthritis pain gone, the uncontrolled blood sugar, normal; the doctor was amazed. I told his doctor that we had been following Dr Neal Barnardís food program and he said ďIt is probably the difference in proteins that is healing you, keep doing what you are doing, itís definitely working!Ē

Its amazing what affect our food choices and 3 months will make, isnít it?

I feel so very good some days, then just awful. I think I found some thing good for me and I feel great, then in a few days, boom...back on the ride again.

It sound like you have found your golden key! I am so happy for you and it gives me GREAT Hope!

So glad your anniversary was wonderful, congratulations!

Dusty, I am so proud of you. The choices you have made have made such a difference in your life and isn't that what it's all about? Making good choices? My dh has promised me a trip to the beach ( I haven't been in about 15 years), as soon as I lose enough weight that I will feel good. This isn't his stipulation, it's mine. I really want to go, so I really want to lose to get there!

Dusty that is GREAT about all the improvement in both your health issues. People don't realize just how much their food choices really make. I can tell the difference daily when I eat too much sugar. I know Vegan is for all of us but just making better choices can really help with pain etc. The other thing that makes a big difference that people don't do often enough is to get the 8 Hours of sleep every night. I'VE BEEN GIVEN ANOTHER CHANCE AT LIFE!

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

Iím so excited I just have to share this info with those who will take a moment to read it!

I donít know if many of you know that for the past 3 months that my family and I have not been eating any animal products at all or not, but I canít begin to tell you the benefits of eating vegan and how it has changed our lives!

I say ďourĒ because for the first time since my husband was diagnosed with diabetes, his blood sugar is normal! On Monday this week, he got his lab results back and his A1C test came back 5.2 and that is perfect! Woohoo!

Also, neither he nor myself suffer from arthritis pain anymore since we began cutting out all cholesterol. We still have arthritis riddled throughout our bodies, but the pain is gone without the aid of drugs! Woohoo!

My hubby has only bone on bone for knees and he could barely walk before because of the painÖgone!

Also his legs and feet were always so painful from diabetes neuropathy, but the pain is gone! Woohoo!

Seriously, this Ďeating veganí has given me a new chance at life that I havenít felt in years! I no longer suffer from the Claudication that had kept me from walking! Some of you may know that when I first began sparkpeople, I could barely walk from one room to the other, but slowly I have been able to walk a little here and there with great effort and much pain, but nowÖitís totally amazing; I no longer have the excruciating leg pain!

Weíre leaving for the coast to celebrate our 41st wedding anniversary, and I hope the weather is pleasant because for the first time in years I want to walk on the sand barefoot! I havenít been able to do that in so many years, and now that I can walk without pain, I canít wait!

So that should explain why I havenít been spending as much time on the computer; I have a new lease on life! I feel like God has made me privy to all these amazing discoveries so that we can enjoy life again and Iím so thankful! Woohoo! (My inspiration came from a professor who teaches medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine!)

I feel like a puppy with a brand new tail!

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Hugs and good health~Dusty

Dusty I have some questions for you --like does your dr. back you? Do you find it hard to get the proper proteins you need? Do you feel weak or sick much of the time...what do you do when you crave meat..and are you still eating a vegetarian diet? What is the best thing that's come from your change in diet? How hard is it to start?..How did you convince your husband to do it with you?--you can send me personal mail on SP or on my page for these answers..I would love to know what you say...

Hereís a lesson I want to learn...

Thursday, April 09, 2009

A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with his hair fashionably combed and shaved perfectly, even though he is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today.

His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready.

As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on his window.

I love it,' he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.

Mr. Jones, you haven't seen the room; just wait.'

"That doesn't have anything to do with it,' he replied. Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged ... it's how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it.

'It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice;

I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do.

Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I've stored away.. Just for this time in my life.

Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you've put in.

So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of Memories!

Thank you, my sparkfriends, for your part in filling my Memory Bank; Iím still depositing.

'Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

1. Free your heart from hatred.

2. Free your mind from worries.

3. Live simply.

4. Give more.

5. Expect less.
