What do I have to lose?

Saturday, September 18, 2010

The 15th marked my 3 month Sparkaversary (go me!) and I was thinking about why I decided to become a part of this amazing community... I guess when I decided I needed to really take charge and lose all of this extra tonnage, I was going to need some help. I joined T.O.P.S. and found SP! I'm not much for online communities, I took my profile off of Myspace and Facebook because I wasn't a fan, why would I want to join SP? Then I thought, if I could get some feedback on weight loss and maybe some encouragement, what did I have to lose??? I'll tell you what I lost... 40 lbs, 12.5 inches off my entire body, my third chin, the inability to walk up a flight of stairs, 2 pants sizes, a shoe size (didn't know that was possible), and the belief that I was going to be fat for the rest of my life. I've lost a lot by joining SP but I've gained even more... Unbelievable and unwavering support from my sparkfriends, a better knowledge of health and nutrition, and most importantly, the knowledge that I AM able to lose weight, be healthy and do things I didn't think were possible, including the C25K (thanks AmyJean). Thanks to all of my friends for all of the support and encouragement. That's what SP is all about and that's why this site and the program works!

I LOVE the word "tonnage". I think that's pretty much the best thing ever, except for losing it, and "40 lbs, 12.5 inches off my entire body, my third chin, the inability to walk up a flight of stairs, 2 pants sizes, a shoe size (didn't know that was possible), and the belief that I was going to be fat for the rest of my life." Rock on with your bad self!!! AWESOME!!!

I thought I was gonna be fat forever too! This whole hope and optimism thing is a strange, strange phenomena to me. I'm SO glad you decided to do the C25K!! Besides the obvious awesomeness of this site and the amazing sparkfriends to be made, I think the coolest part is realizing that we're capable of SO much more than we ever thought possible.

Wait... what? Why are you giving me crap???

Thursday, August 26, 2010

So, I went to dinner last night for my dad's b-day. I did really well, I looked up all the nutrition info and knew what I was going to order so I wasn't really worried about it. When we got there I found, that because it was a chain, not all the items listed on their "nutrition menu" were actually served at the restaurant. That's ok, I left me with only 2 choices, so we're still good. I ordered steak and asparagus and then I asked what it was cooked in. That sent up a big sigh from the waitress, "I'll have to check." The other issue I had was when I ordered the dressing for my salad, they didn't have the low fat honey mustard I wanted so I asked what other low fat dressing they had. The waitress looked at me like, "you're so big now, why does that matter... do you REALLY want to know about LOW FAT options, come on..." I'm sure it's all in my head, but that look just really unnerved me. I don't care what SHE thinks, who is she anyways? I know by questioning the food, that I'm going to get exactly what I want. I'm just sorry that there may be others out there, not wanting to ask for low fat options or get thing "on the side" because of that look. Don't let anyone make you feel bad for asking 100 question about their food, you're paying for it, you deserve to get what you want. This is why I cook the majority of my meals at HOME!!!

ps - the food was really good...

Sorry that you had to deal with this. I wonder if she was hoping you would just say, "Oh - never mind!" when you realized she was going to have to delay ordering your meal because she had to go ask how the food was prepared. Whatever, right? You ended up winning in the end and that's what matters.

I hate to say it, because my sister was a server forever.. but it has been my experience that people that work for tips are getting so complacent that they are going to get a tip, no matter how they act, they just don't care. I know most people don't want to make a scene, especially when they are with family, but if it'd been me, I would have asked her, flat out, why she was giving you attitude. I mean, the prices that those kind of places charge for their food anyway, you should be able to get it however you want it, without any attitude from the wait staff.

I'm not saying that all servers are like that, believe me. I just know from experience, that good service is hard to come by.

Good for you for hanging in there and not letting an incompetent waitress steal your resolve to take care of yourself. Restaurants can be frustrating, but there are good ones out there, even though they can be hard to find. It's really disgusting how some chain restaurants make horribly bad-for-you food sound so healthy on the menu. It's up to you to ask, and it's up to the servers to know how food is prepared. AND...... you can ask to have food prepared differently. It's your right. Thanks for inspiring me!

#1- the waitress should always know how something is prepared- it's her job to know!
I don't think your requests were over the top at all- people ask for stuff on the side all the time.

I've gotten a LOT more confident about ordering things MY way when I go out to eat. I used to always worry about being a "bother" by demanding substitutions or asking questions. All-in-all, my experiences with being more picky have been pretty positive. I rarely have places get my order wrong or have a server make me feel like I'm being an nuisance. If I did encounter that, you can bet it would affect their tip!

I think...that it was not that she was looking at you thinking why are you trying to eat low fat, but rather that she did not want to do her job and go ask questions about the food that she did not know the answer too. If she had been waiting on me, her attitude would have greatly affected her tip.

Good for you for getting the food how YOU wanted it!!! emoticon emoticon

Sweets, you are correct in not worrying what others think. YOUR opinion is what matters!

Another technique is to get your dressing on the side, just dip in your fork before you spear a bite of salad. That way you get hardly any...and it doesn't matter if it's low fat or not! You still get the flavor, though.

Spark on! emoticon emoticon

She's pure EVIL!!!

And, NO, I'm not talking about the venomous duck at the end of my road... Some of you may know that I have recently bought a treadmill. As a bonus, it came with a Jillian Michaels iFit card. I was really excited to try it out tonight! She welcomes you to the iFit software and tells you she's here to help you get stronger and into shape... I had no idea what that meant exactly. Apparently it means working you out till your lungs bleed! It started off all nice and sweet, 2.5 miles and 0 incline. I can handle this... immediately it moved to 3.0 at 5% incline. I can go 3.0, not a %5... barely at 0. Then it switches to 7% incline at 3.2 mph. I THOUGHT I WOULD DIE!!! She kept saying, "stay with me, we're almost there and it's all down hill from here." We NEVER got to the downhill part, except at the VERY end. Does she not know I'm terribly overweight? Does she not know I could have set kindling ablaze with my thighs they were rubbing together so fast? Who is this woman and why is she trying to kill me? But I have to say now that's it over and oxygen has returned to my lungs it was FANTASTIC! I can feel it in my thighs and calfs and it felt really good... afterwards! I lived to tell the tale and try another one of her workouts... another day... Jillian ROCKS!!!!

I decided to try her 30-Day Shred...and thought she's equally as evil in that too. And she talks about how anyone can do it no matter their weight, fitness level, etc., but her two "helpers" on the video look more toned than she does! So there's me trying to keep up with three skinny mini's.

She does not even have "eaters arms", and you can actually SEE between her thighs when she stands up!! What's that all about????
You are a gutsy woman to keep up with her!! Great job!

I never knew...

Saturday, August 07, 2010

that I could actually accomplish the goals I'm trying to reach. We all know I'm not talking about getting a job or cleaning the house.... I'm talking about changing my life. When I started this whole thing on May 24, 2010 my goal was to lose weight, plain and simple. I never thought it would get to this level! Maybe it's because I've never stuck with a diet for very long, never exercised, never anything! I never thought I'd care so much about how many calories are in foods never mind the fact that I'd actually be "counting" them. I never wanted to walk down my driveway to get the mail and this morning I walked 3 miles on my treadmill and didn't even think twice about it. I never knew, that by starting with small steps and writing down your goals, I'd be able to accomplish so much! Thanks to Sparkguy, sparkpeople.com and all of the support from my new sparkfriends!!! Everyday, I'm learning more about the things I never knew I could do!
