Can You Help Me Avoid the Common Cold?

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

I don't know why I am so susceptible to the common cold! I already take a lot of precautions: I take a multivitamin with 100% of my RDI of Vitamin C, I eat a diet full of fruits and veggies from all colors of the rainbow, I stay hydrated, I keep my hands clean, I get regular physical activity... but I get at least five or six HORRIBLE colds every year. I'll often use +100 tissues every day when my colds are bad, and I blow my nose until it's red and raw. What can I do?

Make sure you get enough Vit D!

I know this may seem obvious but how about a flu shot? Not sure if that works for colds too. Also if you take a high amount of C then stop, your more susceptible to them.

Are you around little kids? If so, that could be the culprit. They are notorious for sharing their germs with the unsuspecting. If no little ones to blame it on, then I agree with the other suggestions. Burning the candle at both ends oftentimes results in illness. Rest and de-stress may be the key. emoticon

Try taking the supplements Echinacea and Goldenseal root. Natural live yogurt with probiotic cultures is supposed to strengthen the immune system too.

When you get a cold, make sure you buy tissues with a moisturiser in them to soothe your nose. Buy a steam inhaler and use twice a day for twenty minutes to shorten the duration of a cold. Hope this helps.

I was going to suggest vitamin D3. I have been taking it and did come down with a cold but it only lasted 3 days which is a real change for me since it usually takes me about 2 weeks to recover. It is worth a try.

Are you taking a good multi and Vitamin D? When I take enough Vit D (5,000 IU) during the winter I never get sick or only slightly. Also, make sure your diet is full of fruits, veggies, cut out processed foods and sugar. Lots of sleep too.

I agree with Maraude; you can be super healthy, but if lack of rest and stress are a common occurrence in your life, your immune system can still take a toll. A day or two off, doing absolutely nothing but watching reruns of old sitcoms/chick flicks and eating nutrient dense fruit and vegetables would do wonders. Hot yoga is also known for clearing your sinus'. Take some time for you to rest up and not worry about anything.

My dads a doctor, lol. This was drilled into me as a kid.

There are many factors at play; you didn't mention stress and sleep habit for example or if people are sneezing on your or if you breathe recycled air where sick people are ... and on. I've been sick for almost 2 months now, one after the other and I haven't got all of them so my immune system is working but like a damm it can only hold up to so much. :)

eta: Check zinc out; watch out for loss of taste though.

Do As You're Told!

Monday, February 13, 2012

I am a testament to the power of going to the gym and doing whatever the **** the instructor tells you to do.

I am not athletic. I am not coordinated. I am not (by nature) strong.

But I show up at the gym, four times a week, and do whatever the instructor says.

I run laps around the gym. I lift barbells. I step on the BOSU ball. I lift dumbbells. I step on the step. I do jumping jacks. I hold a plank. I do push-ups. I do sit-ups. I use gliders. I use resistance bands. I stretch. I warm up. I cool down.

I am obedient.

You don't have to know what you're doing!

The instructor will tell you!

All you have to do is show up!

Well, there is one other thing.

You know those little things you do to make it easier? Lifting the weights not quite all the way? Jogging when you're supposed to run? Taking a break from the stepping to get a drink?

Stop doing them.

Make every minute count. Make every move a little bit harder, not a little bit easier.

If you go to the gym, and do what you are told, and stop letting yourself get comfortable, you WILL lose weight. You WILL get stronger. You WILL get healthier. You WILL get faster. You WILL surprise yourself. You WILL become "that person" at the gym!

"Wasting Away..."

Thursday, February 09, 2012

"You're wasting away!" someone said to me today.

I know they meant it nicely, but let's get one thing straight- that is NOT a compliment!

Yeah, I'm way smaller.

But I'm also way stronger. I'm wearing a baggy sweatshirt, but if you could see my arms, you would see MUSCLES! And I don't know how you're missing my leg muscles, which you can see through my leggings! You don't need x-ray vision for that!

I know people have good intentions when they compliment someone on their weight loss, but saying things like "you're wasting away" or "you're going to disappear soon" can be more hurtful than helpful. While I'm small on inches I'm big on strength, and on health, and I don't like being compared to someone who is starving, impoverished, or sick... because I KNOW I don't look like that. And really, unless you're SURE someone has been actively trying to lose weight, it's probably better that you don't comment on their weight at all. While my weight loss has been intentional, I know that in many people it is an unwanted consequence of illness or stress. And nobody wants to be celebrated for being sick and anxious.

Mind your words, folks!

When I was down at 162, I had people telling me that. And I am planning to get even smaller than that! I hate comments people make (they haven't made any since I've gained back 35lbs tho..lol). Sometimes I think they have no common sense!

You're absolutely right ... my father literally wasted away, and it was so painful to watch, I can't imagine why anyone would say that jokingly ... I guess they don't know what it's like.

Seriously!! You're so right!!! STRONG is the new SKINNY! One of my favorite sayings! I seriously want to get a shirt that says that! (Bodyrock.tv has a t-shirt program where you can put together your own shirt with logos and stuff and I want to get one that says that!)

People need to watch how they're talking! You've worked your booty off! Literally! haha, and "wasting away" implies being sickly.. ugh... PEOPLE!

I Have No Pants... But My Gym Has a Bossypants!

Wednesday, February 08, 2012

First and foremost, I strongly object to my gym scheduling a strength class and swapping it for cardio at the last minute. In preparation for the strength class I did my own cardio BEFORE the class, and then got hit with another sixty minutes! Ouch!

In other news, there is a girl about my age who is also becoming a regular at the gym. In addition to attending classes, she has taken on the role of bossing people around. I've seen her around for about three months, and in the last few weeks she's been telling EVERYONE what to do. She tells other people how much weight to lift, where to stand, which direction to turn, etc. Sometimes her instructions directly contradict the instructor's directions, and she messes things up for other people. And it's not like they're asking for her opinions. It's really nice that she's starting to feel comfortable and knowledgeable about the gym, but SERIOUSLY GIRL- keep your thoughts about other people's workouts to yourself! Unless you're asked for advice, stick to neutral topics like the weather!

Nope, she hasn't bossed me around. However, it concerns me when I see her bossing around people who are new to the gym, as the things she tells them are wrong, and they mess up their workouts. Her advice isn't going to injure anyone (as I haven't seen her lecture anybody about form or anything), but she creates inconveniences and discomfort when she tells people to put equipment away too early, stand in the wrong place, face the wrong direction, run to the wrong place, show up at the wrong time, etc. I'm currently using the strategy of "don't make eye contact" because I know if she tries to advise me about anything I will SNAP!

There are a lot of different personalities out there; she probably think she's helping. If she approaches you, you can always ask her questions nicely, "r u a personal trainer? why is the way you are telling us better than the instructor's? have you thought of teaching your own class?" see what she says. Either she'll get the message or perhaps she's right. Make up your mind after you get to know her.

I'd be ill if I had planned something and done something and they switched it around!

I have similar people at my gym like that too. I have a lot of people who stare. There is one girl, who huffs and puffs around my sister when she goes because they both use the same machine. I keep to myself, do what I got to do most of the time, and leave!

Not so sure I would be happy about the switch. I can not do hard impact cardio for health reasons. That would have made me mad also. Looks like Ms Bpssypants needs to be told to settle down. LOL Unless you hire her as a trainer that is. Can you go to the mgmt of gym. I think I would. Hope you continue to have great workouts.

I Officially Have No Pants

Sunday, February 05, 2012

I've only lost a pound since Christmas, but it must have all come off my abdomen, because I officially have no pants that fit. None. I am now accepting cash donations to rebuild my wardrobe- just stick your money in an envelope and label it HOLISTICDETOXER... I'm sure the postal service will find a way to bring it to my doorstep!

emoticon in advance!

(PS Don't really do that.)
