Why am I in this ditch?

Today is the first day of the rest of my life, the entire past is gone - just a text to learn from. we know making a major weight loses is something we can do. something that require making the effort and the persistence to continue over time and making good choices most of the time, But also something we can do. For me it was not like being chained to the dungeon wall. I had a lot of good tasty food to eat. and spent some time walking, something I enjoy. I could even eat a donut - just not 12 at a time :)

Keeping it off has to be at least as easy, and dropping the next 75 pound can't be any harder so why am I sticking in the slide? How can I gain 5 pounds in a week, That is eating an extra 15,000 calories !!!

I don't remember eating that much, and of course if I look back at my tracker I find I forgot to fill it out :(

I'm not sure how smart I am, but if I hit myself in the face with a shovel - I know I am doing something wrong. Lets look at the score board. One week just remembering without writing things down and a 5 pound gain - the next Keeping track and being careful and the damn 5 pounds of fat disappeared .

What should we learn?

Today I am making something like Broccoli Beef for lunch, I am using fat free hot dogs for the meat and putting it on cabbage

    You can gain a lot of weight through retaining water. Watch your sodium. I have that problem. Although I have reached my goal I still have to watch that.

    It's amazing how little it takes to get off track. Lucky for us it's just as easy to get back on! Once your realize what's going on you can make the adjustment. A doughnut fell into my mouth last week when I wasn't paying attention!
Love the last paragraph about our place in the environment. Enjoy the journey!

    We who have been on this road know what will work and what won't. But we forget that we are now practicing being good to ourselves and that tracking and walking aren't drudgery but a way to be kind.

What Is a Sparkpage, and why have one?

If we met at a coffee house you would notice a hundred things about me
From the shoes I have on, to my elaborate hair style, if you had looked at my page you would know this is a joke, I comb my hair with a washrag :)
As we spend time together we learn other thing, maybe about my kids, or that I throw pots, or pan gold. On line things are different, not even a voice, let alone a face of hard candy in a bowl on my desk, the things that make me - Me Just words on a page

Here we build the image the world sees, to make our voice recognizable we add a picture, real, or a pixie, or a cat that wants to bloom.

When I post something you know who's talking, That sensible grandfather or wild and crazy guy who eats Pickle sandwiches for breakfast

so get started, build your picture, a profile so we can know you. protect your privacy, just post things you are willing to share with the world, Not that the world cares. One of my daughters is always worried about someone tapping her phone, I have heard her conversations, they may be important to her and the person she is talking too, but no one else wants to hear :)

The last thing, if you write something very good - like my beyond diet or my post on Bad food - you can enter it as a blog and share it with others

    I agree. When I meet a new person here on Sparks, the first thing I do is go to their Sparkpage to see a little about them and look at their pics. I find it very revealing what pics a person chooses to post. I will be checking yours out right after I write this. Hope you check mine out as well.

I know we can't hear a person's voice online, but I do have one in my head of all my closest friends here. I hope one day to meet them and see if that voice is like the real thing.

Bad Food????

WalkingGrandma got me thinking about this, Bad and Good Food? Chocolate is bad and Peanut butter is good? Coke is bad and apple juice is good? This sounds like something written by the federal government. check them in your tracker, Chocolate has less fat and calories then Peanut butter and I like it a lot better -you can make your own choice. Apple juice has 25% more calories and sugar then Coke, I don't waste my calories on either - would rather save them for a donut

A lot of the information they have been telling me for the last 60 years is bogus. How about empty calories? Look at your tracker, you need a lot of grams of carbohydrates, the body don't care if they came from whole wheat bread, a donut or a Coke.

NOTE: you also need a lot of other things So it is unhealthy to just eat donuts for a week. I suggest several fruits each day, and not the same ones every day. I suggest 3 to 5 vegetables each day and ten different ones each week, and some meat, both red and white

Just fit what you eat into the tracker, if the balance between carb's, fat's, and protein is right, and you are eating a broad selection of different foods none of the things you are eating is bad. If on the other hand you went 500 calories over, or had only one half of the minimum protein, that was bad, not the food, the choices you made

    You are exactly right...it is all about balance. Too much of any one thing is bad even if it is good for you. Moderation is the key. If we see food as good and bad then we see ourselves as good or bad when we eat them. Food is neither good or bad, it is just nutrition. We need to get the best nutrition we can get for the calories we consume. Life is too short not to eat a little chocolate once in a while!

There are pro and cons in everything.. I use sweetner- I wanted to loss weight in this life time verses natural with calories in it lol..
Everything has a effect on us.. I choose my demons, and got the weight off anyway..

Life is a journey

Life is a journey, I started my new life in 2007, joined TOPS and in 18 months dropped 100 pounds. on any journey there are hills as well as valleys, I coasted for a time, and gained back 30 pounds, now I am back on track 10 pounds lighter then at the first of the year

When I look in the mirror I have mixed feelings, I have a belt from before that is 14 inches to long :)
But I am still a foot bigger around then when I got out of the Marines

You did not become complacent, you said this is not important and assigned it a low priority and moved on to something else - Look at my story, I DID THE SAME THING

We can do this, we can reshape the body we have into the one we want, My goal is not to be able to wear My Marine Uniform, that in My destination, I have two goals the short one is to lose two inches by Halloween, the long one is two more by New Years

How about you? What is important? Is your body going to be a tool for having fun or an anchor holding you back? If you want it to happen, set up your tracker - use it to find what changes you should make. Post something here at least twice a week, become part of this family, Let us help you and help us, together we have the answers

the choice is yours, come walk with us or sit back and grow

I dropped 5 pounds in July, Part of it was getting back on track, and making sure I had fruit always available, something that helped on the first leg of the trip
another change is I am using low calorie "crackers" for bread, Wasa's "Crisp'n Light crackerbread" A
2.5 by 5 inch slice only 20 calories, corn thins, like a rice cake but thin 22 calories each and rice crackers.

I have been having a lot of sandwiches

Do you eat sandwiches for breakfast, maybe time for a side trip, this morning I "fried" red bell peppers on the grill, and made nice sandwiches with them, low fat ham and laughing cow cheese. It was a great way to break my overnight fast.

Plateau is a dirty word

I'm a black and white person, I think there is a reason for everything and everything follows the same rules. I also have eyes and see that lots of things in the world don't seem to obey this :)

weight lose should be simple, just eat less or walk more and the pounds will disappear. Every one on this group knows this is not true
2006 was a bad year for me, as it was ending I was a fat old man, I could not walk 8 blocks without sitting down. The pressure of, and chemicals in, my blood were indicating I was just waiting for the Big Crash. But more important I could not do anything fun.

I looked at my self and knew I had to make changes to enjoy the few years I had left. I started using a walker with a seat. and started working out in the pool. and changed my eating, at 350 pounds you can still eat a lot and lose weight.
by October 2008 I got down to 250, put 20 pound back on in the next 3 months and have been in a holding pattern for the last two years. I don't mind holding instead of putting it all back on but would rather start losing it again

dieters call this a plateau, I know for a person who was as heavy as I was, or am, there is one or several emotional components involved. but am not sure what to do

There are a lot of us stuck on the Plateau, any ideas on how to start climbing down?

My belt is 14 inches shorter then when I started and if i want I can walk ten miles, I don't like to run so I don't. But stairs are not a problem. I feel 30 years younger, instead of killing time until I die, I look forward to each new day and plan to spend my next 20 years developing my new profession as a potter.
Oh and I am dancing again - Best of all when I smile at a cute lady she smiles back.

BUT I want to cut another foot off my belt, getting my waist to where it was when I got out of the Marine Corps Where is the path down?

    Like you said a 250lb man can still eat alot and maintain. Calories in, calories out.
If you really want to lose than get back to the basics keep a journal.
Write down everything you eat. Eat between 1800-2000 cals per day.
Use the TOPS exchange system if you do not like the calorie counting.
Start to lift weights. As we get older we lose muscle lifting weights is the best way to do this.
I have started doing push ups.

You can get off this plateau just really get down to basics.

    That is a long time to be on a plateau. Sounds like you need to tweak something. You are certainly good at maintaining, so when you get to where you want to be staying there shouldn't be a problem.

It is hard to say why. I've been struggling for a short while with the same problem. But I know I haven't been tracking my food or exercising like I should. And I quite often don't eat enough. Who'd have expected that?

I have just added an apple cider vinegar cocktail back into my aresnal (needs to be the kind with the "mother" in it). Budged the scale this morning.

I use a brand called Bragg's which has the recipe on the label or you can google it.

You are right that deeply hidden issues can also be a cause, and only you can ferret those out. Keep blogging and writing in your journal. I find they finally start illuminating themselves if you are persistent.

Let me know when you start going down again. Great job getting to where you are today, even with the plateau.
