It is more than my weight, I want you too!

Sunday, November 13, 2011

I guess I thought things would be different when I reached my goal weight, like I would celebrate or something. You would think I would throw a party or buy some boots! Boots always make me happy.

I realize it is just not about a number. I need to know I can make good food choices. I might have the correct number on the scale but I want more. I want to be healthy, fit and firm.

I am very proud of the changes I have made regarding food choices and meal preparation. I have come so far from the candy in my pocket and ice cream for dinner days.

Honestly, I want more of my friends to join me before I celebrate. It is not that I can't be happy with my accomplishments but I just have to have some of my friends along with me. I am just going to have to continue to work on this whole fitness thing for me and you! We can all have our party together and it will definitely be a dog friendly party!

Celebration is always about success and sharing it with others is an explanation point. Your heart seems to always strive to help others in achieving goals and you're always there with congratulatory comments (hugs). You're loved by many and Jan and I want you to know you are so deserving of many, many hugs. Now celebrate young lady and buy those boots! We love ya lots! emoticon

emoticon on reaching your goal - you know, they say that reaching the peak on Everest is the half-way point for the climb because the climbers still have to get back to camp safely.

I think our journey is somewhat of the same - the first 'half' is reaching goal, the 'other half' is staying there. Although I'm nowhere near my goal weight at this point, I am looking forward to joining you at that 'half way point' - in the meantime, I hope you will check out some of the great SparkTeams geared toward maintenance!!!

Sugar Challenges!

Saturday, November 12, 2011

If there is one thing we see here on Spark is we all have our challenges. Some of us have no problem walking away from french fries, others dream of them. My biggest demon has always been Sugar.

I do think I am a sugar rehabilitation graduate. I have noticed a distinct improvement in so many areas of my life since I have cut back on sugar. A Former Candy Hoarder/Keeper, I sometimes still struggle with that demon.

I am down for the night and for some reason I start eating cough drops non-stop (6 of them) . My body was definitely craving it and I was perplexed. I am going to move those cough drops from my bedside drawer to the medicine cabinet.

It is not even the cough drops, it is the way I feel. It is an uneasy feeling, do you know what I am talking about?

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend filled with healthy food and good times, Victoria

Know exactly how you are feeling! That is just what I blogged about-I am out of control lately with sugar. Although I count it and sometimes go over in my calories-but, it is one of those things once you keep eating it, you want more and more! Out of sight out of mind-good for you!! emoticon

_LINDA 11/12/2011 11:44PM

I surely do know what you mean. I have been enjoying the sugary treats like crazy at the bridge tournament and I am not even a sugar addict -I am the opposite -love those salty chips. I rarely have sugary treats -just the 90% dark chocolate squares which don't have nearly the sugar these baked goods have. So it is some kind of an addiction. I think its a good thing I cancelled my game tonight, don't think my tummy could handle one more sugary treat, going to burst lol. I have never been a fan of candy, but things like a date square and a peace of pie will send me around the bend. Fortunately, those are few and far between.
Have a super Sunday!

Sugar definitely seems to be addicting. It is also hard to get away from. I can go long periods of time without it, then I crave sweet treats. The thing is, if I give in to the craving, I want more and more... and more. I get sucked back into the cycle.

I hope you are not coming down with the flu. I was living on cough drops last night. I graduated to hot toddies today.

I've pretty much kicked away potato chips but haven't had as much success with chocolate. Whether it's the sugar or the chocolate taste, I'm not sure. I do know that if I overdo it I feel miserable. have to work harder on this. Good luck to you. -- Lou

LYNDALOVES2HIKE 11/12/2011 4:42PM

Many years ago, I read a book called Sugar Blues - I think the author's name was Duffy or something like that. It was the first time I had contemplated the idea that sugar could be an addictive substance, much like alcohol [which is actually sugar], nicotine, cocaine, etc. I have since become aware that eating sugar makes me crave more sugar and it's a LOT easier to stay away from it once it's flushed out of my system.
emoticon emoticon
I have had periods where I gorge or binge on sugary items, also periods where I just eat 'a lot' of it, and I don't feel as good during those times. Not sure why I keep putting myself through it but I really do believe it is an addiction - so just like some people stop smoking only to pick up a cigarette at some point and start up all over again, this is my current struggle. The funny thing is that I actually DID quit smoking many years ago - once I really made that decision and got over the withdrawal symptoms, I was done with it.
emoticon
It hasn't been quite that easy with sugar, tho - and even though the shrinks don't classify 'sugar addiction' in their DSM-IV book of diseases, I think it SHOULD be right there in whatever category they have other addictions listed. I actually had this conversation with a shrink who goes to my gym and he disagrees with my opinion on this - but heck, what does he know anyway??
emoticon
GOOD FOR YOU for putting away the cough drops - I absolutely do know what you mean and I commend you for recognizing what was going on and taking steps to deal with it. Have a GREAT weekend yourself!!

I think she likes it!

Friday, November 11, 2011

I have been enjoying all of the blogs full of grateful expressions and love today. Perhaps it is because it is Veteran's Day or the date 11-11-11. I have been taking full advantage of the "I like this blog" button. It occurred to me we should all make it known when we like each other's blogs. It spreads the spark, kindness, positive reinforcement, communication, self expression and overall goodwill to one another.

I am posting this video of Baily with my Brother, just for fun. I would like to thank all of the Veterans, their whole family and friends for their sacrifice.

Have a Grateful Day!

If Nothing Happens in Vegas - Take a Hike!

Tuesday, November 08, 2011

Very cool to think something would happen to us in Vegas that we need to "stay" there. Most people go to Las Vegas having fun, but nothing so outrageous. I have been to Las Vegas through most of my adult life many times. Until recently, I never knew I could go hiking in Red Rock Canyon just 16 miles from Las Vegas.

Red Rock Canyon features a one-way 13-mile scenic drive and plenty of hiking. I did three hikes there loving every minute.

My last hike was a bit of a surprise. I hiked thinking I would find a river in a mile, only there was no river in site for almost 2 miles.

Finally, I was very glad to find a ravine with a hidden river. I sat under a tree, ate some lunch and took this video.

I was very pleased with the staff at the Gold Coast Hotel. They went over and beyond to ensure a pleasant and enjoyable stay. The front desk was flexible when I extended my trip three times to accommodate my hiking. The staff was very kind and it almost felt like home. They are not fancy but they make up for it with extra helpful staff. Everywhere I went in this hotel the staff jumped to help me.

The bellman was so sweet he printed out a copy of his favorite Red Rock Canyon Trail, turned out to be my favorite also. It is called "Calico Tanks". This is me at the top.

Just in case you don't have time to hike, there is a scenic drive well worth your time.

If you go to Las Vegas take a 15 minute drive and visit Red Rock Canyon.

Awesome vlog and photos! Surprised to see that oasis of green in the desert! I so wish I could have hiked the times I have been in Vegas, but not driving can be a pain. Really limits where I can go. I had gone by Red Rock when on a bus tour so enjoyed seeing some of it, but to get out and hike it would be the ultimate! Unfortunately, the bus tours I have been on where geared to seniors, so more shopping and commercial sites and very little time for exploring or walking around..
Keep on sharing your hikes with us, look forward to them!!
Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

I have always wanted to go to Vegas and now know there are great places to hike. Were any of your hikes accessible for wheel chairs. Just need it to be wide enough for two people to walk side by side comfortably and not to steep. I have a power chair I use to get out off the main sidewalk trails. I am so thankful to you for sharing your hikes in video and pictures. I used to do a lot of hiking before falling from a fire engine and being paralyzed from the chest down. I was one of those who was outside from sun up to sun down, riding horses all over the desert here in eastern Washington. Love every trail ride and the smells of all the different sagebrush and wild flowers. The video is great, what a great way to spend those extra few days. I am sure you are so glad you did, and you made such great memories.

An inspired Spark Groom

Friday, November 04, 2011

Yesterday our Spark Friend Jan shared her Spark wedding photos and joy. Most of our Spaniel and Dog lovers groups know Mc Gee from all of the stories Jan has shared. The groom is a dog lover who hiked his way to health.

Our hiking team members know Greg and his faithful trail companion Keystone. Greg has a passion for hiking that spread far over the site inspiring me to seek the trails. As you read his page will feel the power of hiking. Now he inspires me for the second time in this lovely blog.
