6 Month Sparkversary and reflections on my journey

Saturday, November 19, 2011

Whoohooooo!! I've made it 6 months!!

Definitely time to look back and celebrate how far I've come, how I've done on my goals, and time to set a new ones.

So here are the goals I have posted on my SparkPage.

My Goals:
**I want to gain control of my insulin resistance thru healthier eating habits**

This goal is on-going and I've learned a lot about what I can and can't eat. No fruit after mid-afternoon. Healthy whole grain breads and pastas are a must. 3-4 servings of veggies...as much raw as possible is best. Water, water water, water, water, water, water, water. Limited hot tea with Splenda is ok, but no more bottomless mugs of hot tea.

**I want to walk or do yoga each day to make my fibromyalgia more manageable**

This one is also an on-going goal. I have also added 15-20 min weight (2 lbs) training 3x a week with Coach Nicole to get my metabolism going without causing pain. I've also learned I can't walk more than 1 mile each day for cardio. It causes too much fatigue. Just under 1 mile is invigorating...more is fatiguing. Now that the cold weather is setting in, I might have to do my cardio-walking indoors with Leslie Sansone. The last couple of days I walked in the brisk 35* temps. all my muscles tightened up and were painful. This has definitely been 6 months of getting to know my body and learning to listen to it! I discovered I LOVE YOGA!!! I feared it for years because of the eastern religious philosophies spouted by so many yoga instructors, but finding a neutral dvd has been a blessing! I'm going to spend my birthday money from my parents on a Christian yoga dvd. I do walk or do yoga or do my weights 5 out of the 7 days per week.

**I want to be a more positive person.**

Now my husband calls me PERKY! GOAL ACHIEVED....now to stay that way all winter and not let SAD overtake me!

**I want to be able to hike with my family- goal achieved!**

GOAL ACHIEVED in October--at 35 lbs weight loss. whhhooohooooooo!

**I want to get my wedding ring back on.**

Well, I'm pretty certain I could get it on if only my knuckles weren't so big from arthritis. boooooo!!!! Not sure what to do about this goal.

**I want to do something outdoors each day**

While I don't get outdoors each and every day, I do get out a lot more than I used to and now with ENTHUSIASM!!! I'm a nature and outdoor lover, but over the past few years my family literally had to drag me outdoors to do something. I was always too achy, too tired, too fat, too depressed to do what I love....be outdoors. Usually the only days I don't get outside are the major house cleaning days or lazy Sundays. So....Goal nearly met!

**I want to lower my blood pressure **

I celebrate that my bp is lower (130/78 from 142/97) GOAL ACHIEVED!!
I've learned that reducing stress, getting enough sleep, losing weight, and exercise are all key to my bp management.

So now.....
New Goals....
1. Get the last 30 lbs off.
2. Get my wedding ring on.
3. Fight SAD over the winter with being positive, exercise, and healthy food
4. Keep my pre-diabetis in check with health eating, exercise, and water
5. Keep my bp low and get the systolic number lower through dealing with stress in healthy ways, getting exercise, and keeping the weight off.
6. Stay active--indoors and outdoors
7. Keep listening to my body with all it's special needs and challenges (hypothyroid, hypertension, pre-diabetes, fibromyalgia, SAD)

I could not have done ANY of this without SparkPeople and all my wonderful supportive, encouraging SparkFriends and my family. But most of all without God's power over the physical to redeem His daughter so she can serve Him more fully with a healthy mind, attitude, emotions, body, and spiritual life!

AWESOME! Congratulations and continued success to you. You WILL do it.

Keep that spark burning brightly.

Oh do you have one of those lights for SAD? DS uses one (got it @ Costco) and it helps . . . not the total "cure" but it really helps.

You have accomplished so much. That is awesome. Taking control of so much that has plagued you in the past, and getting healthier. And at a pace that will enable you to keep it up. Praise the Lord for his goodness to you and for your achievements. Ravyna

Wedding ring - had to be enlarged but same one and now it is getting loose! will get ring guard for it soon

SAD - I also take extra Vit D - seems to help with pain levels too - And I just took the curtain off the window in the office where I am spending much time this fall/winter - WOW let the light shine in!!
Blood pressure is doing OK Water intake is good and good reminder to not lean on tea too much!!

Heidi emoticon I don't think my 6 month Blog will be this great!
Wow, I am proud to be your friend!
May I suggest the 30 day "Sacrifice of Praise" challenge as a way to fight SAD. Give a praise to God every 2 hours all day, for 30 days. Sing it, say it, post it, write it. I am waiting for the 30 days to be up to read some of these blogs!!

So this is what Healthy feels like!

Wednesday, November 09, 2011

Yesterday I worked the election polls. I do this every May and November. I know it will tax my body so I schedule my bedtime the night before around 8pm in order to get up at 4am to be at the polls at 5am before they open at 6am. I usually pack lots of sugary snacks and a high carb lunch and soda pop to keep me going for the 12 hours. (but never really did)

Then I usually drop into bed as soon as I get home at 8pm after tallying up, tearing down the machines, and cleaning up the area of the gym where this precinct is.

I then usually have to schedule no homeschooling the next day since I have no energy yet and need to sleep 12 hours, then take a long afternoon nap as well.

This did not happen yesterday and today.

The SP dietician helped me know what to pack for very healthy snacks and lunch. I had no up and down, up and down, up and down energy at all yesterday!

When we got done and I got home....I STILL HAD ENERGY!!! I played with the dog and stayed up with my family until 10pm getting caught up on their days. (My 14yo son had job shadowed for his school day and my 20yo daughter is recovering from a reaction to Red Dye 40) I even got on SP and recorded my steps towards my Nov. goal. (I had enough steps in the space of 25 ft in 16 hours to equal 2 miles-LOL)

I walk 4 ft, sit, walk 4 ft, sit, walk, sit, all day long. My rear usually is extremely painful the next day from all the jack-in-the-box up and down. But NOT TODAY! All those squats for the last few months have helped! LOL

I slept my usual 9 hours and when I woke up at 7:30, I felt energetic and ready to take on a full day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! emoticon

OMgoodness!!!!!!!!!!!!

So THIS is what HEALTHY feels like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is so great! Your dietician did well for you then? That is a great comparison of previous schedules to now.
KEEP SQUATTING! And walking (crazy to think you walked to miles in a 4 foot space!)

Thank you for commenting on my peanut blog, lol.

Each day I will remove one "walker" and post my steps for that day.

I got a lot of steps today (for me) because of a 20 minute walk and raking leaves...3225. That was 1.6 miles.

I put it in the dvd player last night to take a look at the menu.

It has 7 10 minute workouts, each for a different part of the body. You can do a different workout for each day of the week.

Then there's a menu for 4-6 (I forget this morning) workouts combining some of those workouts for longer. You can choose either more concentrated workout on a body area or a more total body workout.

Coach Nicole also has a tips section (which was pretty good) and an inspirational section with interviews from people who've lost weight with SP.

Fall gardening!

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

I am thrilled!

Today a huge greenhouse near me had an awesome sale on large hardy mums.....$1

My dear husband called me from work with the news which was brought to him by a lady who works for him. He called me and told me hurry and go buy some mums! LOL

He knows how much I love to garden and how I love flowers.

I came home with 8 gorgeous mums! On Sat. , weather permitting, I hope to plant them and take a picture and share here.

I also picked up some native ferns for my dense shady bed on the north side of the house. It will be my cool summer retreat.

Gardening is one of the things I do just for ME and MY enjoyment- something I do that is not connected to being a daughter, sister, granddaughter, wife, mother, teacher, homeschooler, aunt, cousin, niece, support group leader, struggling learner coordinator, dyslexic tutor, friend.

The fact that my husband called me with the news BEFORE the green house closed AND told me to go spend money on flowers and plants really made my day and made me feel loved for just being me...not for any of the many tasks and things I do. emoticon

What a sweet DH! I am an avid gardener, too! I grow flowers, vegies, and herbs. I have a lot of shade, so my DH built me a raised garden this spring (very late spring) so I planted a lot of things that came to fruition now - LOL! - so I ended up with a lot of green tomatoes which I hope will ripen. If not, oh well! It will be there next year! I can't wait to see pics of your mums! emoticon emoticon
