The times have changed, oh yes, they have! Summer of 2008, I decided to change my lifestyle, because I didn't want to have 20 or 40 extra lbs. to lose when I hit middle-age. Also, because I knew that if I lived healthier and ate better and excercised more, every area of my life would improve... I would feel better, have more energy, have better self-esteem, be able to wear smaller and cuter clothes, and be able to be involved in activities I never thought were possible for me.
Year-to-date. I lost about 10 lbs. I've been fluctuating between 115 and 125 for the last couple years, which is great. My goal is to be at 115 permanently in the future. I stopped eating beef, pork, and lamb for several reasons. I don't miss eating them at all. I only eat whole grains - bread, rice, pasta, if I can possibly help it. I eat WAY more fruits and veggies than I used to. These days, it's an apple a day at work and fresh veggies with whatever I'm having for dinner.
I don't eat much dairy. This is largely due to the fact that I'm lactose-intolerant in the mornings. I eat organic soy milk with my cereal and tea. I absolutely LOVE cheese, but try to eat this is moderate amounts. I eat raw almonds almost daily. I hardly ever eat out, and bring my own lunch almost every day. I drink my coffee black. I drink water all the time... I'm never without my Nalgene.
I've learned to love things I never thought I would... black coffee, raw unsalted nuts, eggs. I almost never buy canned or frozen foods, with the exception of canned beans (low sodium), salsa, and frozen chicken.
I also changed my activity level in a big, big way. I ran the Shamrock Run 5k in March this year, the Warrior Dash and Race for the Cure 5k in September, and I'm running the Give and Gobble 5k on Thanksgiving this year. I've learned to love to run outside. It's never dull running in downtown Portland, with the street people and restaurants and cars and bikes and other runners. And I've been taking my Women's multi-vitamin with iron and calcium and Vitamin D every day for a couple years now.
I'm always striving live better and eat better and excercise more every day. Life is good.
