Today is my first day back to work after the Holiday break. I kicked off the morning with my usual habit and I stepped on the scale. I had to do a double take when the read out was 198 lbs. Just like that, I had met my first goal. I wanted to be under 200lbs. Voila, I am done!
Now, I need to schedule in the massage that I had promised myself. My next goal is 190 lbs which is just 8 lbs away. Here I come !

As some of you who have been reading along know, I switch to a 100% raw plant food diet a week ago. No dairy, no breads/grains... just fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts.
There had been one nagging bit of worry: how will I survive the Holiday feasting? Not only is December festive because of Christmas, we also celebrate my Dad's birthday, my son's birthday and my own.
So on Friday, I picked my parents up from the airport and they took the family out to Applebee's for dinner. I wound up ordering half an Oriental Chicken Salad minus the chicken. I felt good with myself.
On Saturday, I prepared a large finnochio (fennel) salad for lunch but dinner was at Red Lobster. It was then that I actually caved in. I ordered a 4 course meal: clam chowder, house salad, grilled shrimp skewers over a vegetable medley along with a brownie bite and ice cream. While I did enjoy the fare, I paid a hefty price for it. I had quite the upset stomach that night.
On Sunday, lunch consisted of more salad. Dinner was at a local Mediterranean restaurant. We shared an appetizer of grilled pita bread and hummus. I had ordered a grilled salmon sandwich that came with steak fries. Again, here I followed my gut and stopped eating when it reported it was full.
Christmas eve consisted of my Dad cooking his renowned meat delicacies where again I indulged myself in meat.
I will admit that I was terrified when I was getting on the scale this morning. To my grand surprise, I had dropped from 202.4 to 201.8. I am grateful for that 0.6 lb loss. Today, I am back to my raw plant food diet. Tomorrow, should be back on schedule.

Despite the Holiday feasting that seems to be everywhere, I am proud to say I have stayed true to the raw whole plant food diet. I feel mentally sharper. I have begun to notice differences in how much healthier my hair feels and how much stronger my nails have become. They used to rip rather easily.
I joined SparkPeople when I had reached a plateau in my weight loss journey that began in August. At the time, I weighed 232 lbs. Today, I weighed in at 202.4 lbs. I plateaued during the month of November at 208 lbs. Nothing would budge despite doing everything right and working out regularly. For anyone else who plateau's, don't get discouraged. Stick with the fundamentals and almost always something in the daily checklist has gone awry.
This is what I consider my 7 healthy habits for life:
1. Everyday, move more than you did the day before.
=> If you walk 5000 steps in one day, make sure the next is at lest 5001 steps if not more. You climbed 3 flights of stairs one day, try 4 the next and so one
2. Remember to hydrate yourself.
=>I generally drink 3/4 hot water with a 1/4 room temp water 16 oz first thing in the morning. This helps keep me regular as my body flushes itself clean. Also, for many of us, we no longer distinguish the signal for thirst and hunger. So if a hunger pang hits, I reach for water first. If it was really hunger, those pangs would be there about a half hour later.
3. Be conscious of what you eat and when you eat.
=> Right now, I am not really tracking my foods or counting calories. I am extremely mindful of what I eat. I measured out a 3 weeks worth of menus when I first started and I basically rotate these days. Eating plant based foods became a habit for me at lunch a long while back (September). What is new for me is carrying that into my dinner. I am also conscious now that when I eat I will never do it while watching TV, surfing the web or working or any other kind of multitasking. This allows my brain to register the fact that I am indeed eating and to pay attention for when it feels full.
4. Chewing food thoroughly (mastication)
=> One of the habits that I picked up thanks to motherhood and the rat race is eating super fast. Those big chunks of food are extremely hard to breakdown within the body and never get completely digested. So I had to teach myself to set my fork down between bites and chew the food while counting to 20.
5. Sleep enough hours
=> I have so many hobbies and interests and so little time. This one was a hard pill to swallow for me. However, it was this very thing broke me out of my plateau. I have a fitbit one which measures sleep quality. This has given me amazing insight until I got to the point where I dialed in the specific hours of sleep for my body.
6. Visual Inspiration and Personal Goals
=> Keep those in sight. I pulled together images that inspire me and I assembled a photo book on my computer and had it printed professionally. It is the first thing I look at in the morning and before I go to bed.
7. Appreciate the small gains
=>Perhaps it is our innate flair for drama or desire for headline news, I am not sure which. Most of us tend to miss the small gains because we are too busy watching for the big one somewhere else. That was the lesson of my plateau as well. While my body was busy getting healthier, I did not acknowledge the fact that I have more consistent energy through out the day or that my menses no longer hurt as much or that my mental acuity has gone through the roof or that I am down 2 dress sizes or that my knees no longer hurt when I climbed the stairs. I could go on and on and on. I started journaling about them and blessings became evident. When you rolled all that up together, it made for a rather impressive personal headline.
So today, I am truly excited by the fact that I am but 3 lbs away from the goal of 199lbs and I am celebrating a full 30lb drop since August.

So Sunday was Day 1 and Monday Day 2 eating a raw plant food diet. My breakfast, am snack, pm snack are juices. Lunch and dinner are basically salads and sprouts and raw pates. My husband is going on an all juice diet to reboot his digestive system. Actually for him, these are the first veggies ever entering his body.
The AM and PM snack juices are:
6 Kale Leaves
4 Celery Stalks
2 Green Apples
1 1" piece of ginger
Both of us feel full of energy. And for both of us, the constipation disappeared.
The only thing that is a challenge right now is how to alter the morning routine to get all the juicing done for the day. We have had a couple of frantic mornings but it is beginning to settle down.
The other is just how much produce we have been going through. We are definitely considering a second fridge to hold all the produce so we do not need to grocery shop every 2 days.
Aside from those two items, everything seems to be working out.

Over the last couple of days, I have watched 3 movies that have radically changed how I view food and nutrition. The movies are:
1. Food Matters
2. Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead
3. Forks over knives
These movies are available on Netflix. So, I have decided to switch to a raw food plant diet - not just for weight loss but as a lifestyle change. I will be giving this eating regimen a fair 60 day evaluation.
I am determined to blog about this experience daily. One of the biggest changes this go around, is that by watching those three movies as a family, everyone has become conscious of what they are putting into their bodies and why. This shift in consciousness is a huge boon. I am no longer the only one trying to get healthy. This household of 5 will be healthy.
