Last Friday my yoga teacher encouraged us to look back at 2013 and make a list of all the things that went right this year. It is tempting at the end of a year to think about all the things we wished had gone better but I think she was right. It is better to focus on the good. So here is my top ten list of things that went right in 2013....

1) I feel like I'm finally getting a handle on my binge eating.
2)My daughter continues to grow and amaze me
3) I've discovered a nice variety of exercises I like to do.
4) I'm meeting new people
5) I'm happier

Plus sized athletic wear

Thursday, August 01, 2013

So when I started at spin class I had a problem. It was clear to me the first day that the shorts I'd worn weren't really idea because the rubbed and got rather bunched up. Also since the class is half spin half yoga the clear solution was some sort of yoga pant. Most of my classmates seem to be wearing some variation of Lululemon's classic yoga outfits. That said, most of my classmates were at a healthy weigh. and it didn't take me long on their website to determine Lululemon was not the solution to my problem.

That brings me to this piece from the HuffPost today.

What strikes me about this is that Lululemon will never be MY solution. When I weighed 126 pounds, technically a smidgen under weigh, I was still a size 12. Maybe I could have squeezed into a 10 but not happily. These people seriously consider 12 to be plus sized! I don't really care if they want to blow off the plus sized market. I'm not a share holder so their profits don't matter to me. But 12 and 14 are very average dress sizes and it bothers me to no end that someone who is at a healthy weight could be told by a anyone (including a retailer) you are too fat to shop here.

That article is pretty disturbing. I find the best selection for plus size athletic wear at Wal-Mart and JC Penny.

This is not a new piece, actually it's almost a year old, but it was new to me today and it made me cry. www.huffingtonpost.com/allison-tate/

There were over 500 photos taken on our vacation. I'm in one of them. And I don't especially like the photo. Now I know that part of that is that DH didn't bring the neck strap for his camera so it mostly got left in the room. I took most of the photos so of course I'm not in them. But still....

I might be fat but I'm not psychotic

My daughter is a big fan of Wallace and Gromet ( www.wallaceandgromit.com/ ). These are awesome animations made with old school stop action clay figures. The most recent movie Kate has on DVD is called A Matter of Loaf and Death. Which features a serial killer of bakers who turns out to hate bakers because they made too many yummy confections and she got too heavy to do her job. Something about this plot really deeply bothers me but some days it really bothers me that it's still perfectly acceptable to make fun of fat people .

On Thursday we I went with my daughter's class to the skating rink. I brought my skates but I wasn't sure if I'd get on the ice. I hadn't been skating in maybe as much as 20 years. But the kids encouraged me so in the end I got on the ice and I made it around the rink 4 times. More importantly I had fun.

Friday was a PA day for my daughter so we decided we'd go skating again. Once again I packed her helmet but not mine. And I took a heck of a tumble and ended up with a minor concussion. I'm going to be fine but it was a little scary. And it will be likely a week or more until I'm all better. Next time I'll be sure to wear a helmet just like the one I make my kid wear.
