Update On My HARDCORE Weekend Challenge!

Saturday, February 05, 2011

Well, I think I got off to a good start although, I would have liked to get in some more exercise. This is a busy time for us right now. The season has started in Florida and that means lots of renters from the Northern states. Since my BF is in real estate, he has been quite busy showing houses. The market is still slow and that is why we have been doing all we can to entice people to look at homes for sale while they are down here relaxing. We have been doing Open Houses and although I am not longer a realtor, I still assist him with the open house. I can't discuss price, but I act as hostess and serve coffee and cookies to prospective buyers. So, I feel like I am working too and don't really have as much time as I did before I started helping him. Having said that, I would do anything to help him in his business, heaven only knows how much he has supported me in my races and raising butterflies, so it is the least I can do.

So here are my weekend challenge results so far:

TEMPLATE (WHOLE WEEKEND): H(6/no limit), A(20/no limit), R(4/8), D(3/12), C(10/20), O(6/12), R(4/8), E(9/no limit) TOTAL: 62

Feeling pretty good about myself!

It's A Little Complicated!

Thursday, February 03, 2011

Since I do not have a printer, this is the best way for me to view what I need to do for this weekend challenge. It looks a little complicated, but only because it is lengthy. I work as hard as I can on these weekend challenges because I have made up my mind to reach my goal this year. For the first time ever, I have been losing weight each week. I know it is early, but I finally feel like I am changing my lifestyle and I wanted to do that so badly before, but it just didn't happen. I run a lot and my friends and family don't understand why I am not skinny. If they were with me 24 hours a day they would know that I was still a closet eater. I would eat healthy all day and then reward myself with some sweet gooey, disgusting thing that ruined the whole day. I used to have a "cheat" day on Sunday and that was supposed to be the day I could eat whatever I wanted because I had "dieted" all week. Well, sometimes my "cheat" started on Saturday and and sometimes it even started on Friday and lasted three days. So, that plan didn't work for me. I was cheating three days a week and feeling deprived the rest of the time. I ended the year almost as heavy as I was when I first started SparkPeople two years ago.

So, what happened? I don't really know, but I wanted to change my life. I don't want to diet any more. I bought some Cooking Light cookbooks and started making changes in the food we eat. I also drink the Dr. Oz Green Vegetable drink every day and I am really noticing a difference in how I feel. The weight is coming off. Like I said in my last blog, I increased my exercise too and I now have a plan that works for me. We each have to find our own way because we all react differently to changes in our life. I think I have found my lifestyle and although it is still a work in progress, it is the path I am going to follow. The weekends were always the hardest and that is why I appreciate these weekend challenges. It fits right in with the life I want to lead.
That ends my post, the rest if the Challenge I will be following.

NOTE: This challenge can be spread out however you desire between Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (February 4, 5, 6, & 7). MOST IMPORTANTLY, limits posted are for the ENTIRE weekend; they are not on a per day basis.

H = Hydrate with non-caloric liquid = 3pts. for every 10 cups (no limit)

A = Accumulate cardio exercise minutes = 5pts. for every 45 min. (no limit)

R = Respond to blog entries written by your teammates = 2 points per response (limit = 8pts.)

D = Document your journey by writing blog entries = 3 points per blog entry (limit = 12pts.)

C = Count and log every single calorie that enters your mouth = 5pts. per day (limit = 20pts.)

O = Organize at least 4 small areas in your home – organization projects should take 15 min. or less each day = 3pts. per area (limit = 12pts.)

R = Relax by taking some “me” time (take a bubble bath, read, listen to music, etc.) = 2pts. per 15 minutes (limit = 8pts.)

E = Eat your freggies = 3pts. for every 5 servings (no limit)

TEMPLATE (WHOLE WEEKEND): H(0/no limit), A(0/no limit), R(0/8), D(0/12), C(0/20), O(0/12), R(0/8), E(0/no limit) TOTAL:

Love this challenge! Weekends I think are the hardest for most because we are out of our routine. Love the idea of tracking all of that, I may take some of that myself for the extra motivation. I am really happy to hear that you have success thus far in 2011, keep up the good work Cynthia!

I was cheating quite often too, but I found a way to get it under control...I love dark chocolate so I bought me a bag of Gharadelli 72% caoca squares, while serving size is 4 squares I have 1 square a day and that is my reward for staying on track all day...I get my chocolate fix and its only 50 calories.

A Few Things That Are Working For Me!

Sunday, January 23, 2011

Well, I finally feel like I am on the right track FOR REAL. I started the new year with a winning attitude and it is still going strong. I attribute this to a few things that I have changed in my daily routine.

1. I exercise an average of 2 hours a day and I shoot for 6 days a week. Instead of doing the exercise all at once; I do a workout in the morning and one in the afternoon or evening.

2. I start my day with Dr. Oz's Green Vegetable drink and make sure I always have the green leafy vegetables I need. I put the recipe in the SP recipes to share with everyone.

3. Processed foods are used as little as possible.

4. I no longer eat whatever I want on Sunday. I stick to my calorie spread and write down everything I eat.

5. I have been doing weekend challenges to help me stick to this routine over the weekend. In the past, the weekends were where I would always blow it, but my Spark challenges now save me.

6. When I am walking with someone that walks slower than I do, I wear my weight belt to get the most out of the time I have spent with them.

I am certainly not perfect, but I have made more progress in January than I did the last half of 2010, so I think I have found a few things that are working for me.

I am fired up and ready to race to my goal weight. I am sure I will make it this year. My butterflies keep my calm and my Spark friends keep me focused.

Hi Cynthia. Loved reading this! I just started in January too and still have "the fire" and the excitement of moving towards my goal. Love your ideas. Amazed that you exercise 2 hours a day!!! That's great. Thanks for sharing. I'll be implementing some of your ideas into my program. Just went out to lunch and was considering a "cheat meal," but ended up having a really yummy salad instead. Yes, it had some bacon and bleu cheese on it, but it was a far cry from the big 'ol juicy hamburger and fries I was considering! It feels good to make healthy choices! Have a great rest of your day. Do you exercise 7 days a week or take one day off?

My Weekend Challenge!

Friday, January 21, 2011

I'm using Elizabeth's idea of posting the whole challenge, that way I can refer to it the whole weekend. Thank you Elizabeth, I love the idea.

TRACK EVERYTHING- Every bite, lick, taste goes into your tracker either on spark or wherever you count calories. 5 points/day
ENCOURAGE YOUR TEAMMATES- Stop by a teammates page, give a teammate a goodie, post on your team thread, comment on a teammates blog. Each one is worth 1 point and you can do any combination you choose! - 5 points max/day
AIM FOR THE STARS- For every 10 minutes of cardio give yourself a point. 6 max/day
MENTAL RECOUP- Don't dwell on "failures" They are golden opportunities for growth! At the end of the day, write down what you feel you didn't do so well with and how you're going to deal with it better next time. Moving on! 5 points/day

Challenge runs from Jan 21-24. Total points possible per day 21, total possible for weekend 84.

Just Had To Share This - My Whole New Attitude!

Thursday, January 13, 2011

I have a vision of where I want to be and it really includes health as well as body shape and weight. I am striving for 2 hours of exercise a day which includes my running. I registered for a February race to keep me motivated and I finally, finally, cleaned my kitchen and pantry of anything processed. Believe me, that was a big accomplishment for me. I really have a better attitude this year than I did even when I first started Spark. I have been watching motivational movies about runners that have overcome great obstacles in their lives and reading Runner's World as well as Women First. Last year, I just played at the game and my weight went up and down ending on a high for the year. Something changed this year and made me want to do better. I don't really know exactly what it was, but I feel different about really wanting to change. Maybe it was introducing butterflies into my life. Since I have been raising them, I have felt so calm. I really love watching the caterpillars mature and eventually emerge from their chrysalises as beautiful butterflies. Maybe it was just because we went through a cold spell where I felt so lazy and now the sun is shining, I don't know. Maybe it is just the effect of the high energy "green drink" I make every morning from green leafy vegetables. Of coarse, having this wonderful place to write my thoughts and get support from my friends helps me keep that attitude going. Whatever it is, I like the new attitude and I am going to make the most of it. Welcome to the new year - The year our goals are met!

If you are interested, take a look at my butterfly site.

Cynthia...I am always so amazed at your positive energy and attitude and wish I could run like you...I do have a bum knee but I'm hoping that if I take off about 20 lbs. that I'll be able to run again...I used to years ago. I went to the museum with my grandkids a while ago and walked into the butterfly room and just stood there watching them, feeling them land on me, feeling that calm wash over me...they were so beautiful and gracefull and delicate and I was in awe. I don't know how much time or equipment you need but I'm thinking a little mini butterfly "farm" this summer up at my cottage for my grandkids so they can experience the whole process.

When I saw your blog title I immediately heard Patti Labelle's "New Attitude" in my head! Your anthem for 2011? :) Then I read about your butterflies and immediately remembered a book from back in the 70s titled Hope For The Flowers by Trina Paulson! Have you read it? Now I have a medical reason to encourage and push me to stick with the plan! Funny how we really decide that enough is enough...we're going to do this...then we end up not only working on our bodies but cleaning house too! I just finished the garage. LOL.

Aren't we all just butterflies...we love and care we mature only to spread our wings and fly.

Right now our weight is our chrysalises and with love of running and care we put into nourishing our bodies we will shed it and spread our wings and show the world our beauty. (ok a bit corny I know but its true)

Keep up the awesome work and what a great new attitude for the new year.
