First Day at the Gym

Monday, August 15, 2011

Over the weekend my dear husband purchased a family membership at the local LA Fitness. Today after work DH went with me to the gym to look it over and become acquainted. The membership is in DH's name so I can only go as his guest. I am not sure that I like that. Anyway, I am usually an early morning exerciser so it was a little different exercising in the afternoon. To be truthful, I was afraid that something would happen and our "date" would be cancelled so I went ahead and did 40 minutes on the elliptical.

Anyway, we looked over some of the machines. Several weeks I downloaded a weight lifting app on my cell phone. The app has not been very useful in my home gym which only consists of dumbbells. I felt comfortable on the machines but not in the dumbbell section of the gym. There were all these guys there and I felt like I was invading their territory.

The next time I will be able to go to the gym will be on Saturday. I am looking forward to a spinning class. I watched the spinning class today and it looked very interesting.

Maybe I will finally lose those last 15 pounds by the end of the year to get to my goal weight.

Hope all goes well on Saturday. Keep up the good work! I'm trying to talk hubby into an elliptical but at least I still have my treadmill.

Don't be afraid of the free weights! Yes, that section is a sausagefest...but most of the guys in there DO NOT KNOW HOW TO LIFT! They are clueless and they don't even know it :) FWIW, I'm frequently the only woman in there, and the most disrespect I've experienced is some oblivious dude blocking my mirror space. Get yourself a legit trainer if it makes you more comfortable, and go for the heavy stuff! The free weights are SO MUCH BETTER FOR YOU than the machines :)

Today in The Woodlands is the Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas Triathlon. This is a 2/4 swim in the lake, 112 mile bike course, and then a 26.2 mile run. I am thinking "Wow" for all those participants and hoping that the race goes well for everyone today. Most of all I like to read about the people in the races. I never knew that people who run long distances lose their toenails after the race. The demands put on the body must be tremendous.

The paper today featured a woman who is 62 years old and who had a lumpectomy in May 2009 along with the radiation treatment for breast cancer. (Before the diagnoses of breast cancer, she had completed five ironman competitions.) After reading her story, I thought enough of my bellyaching. It is time to get out and start moving. So today I did. The city's park and recreation department was hosting a free Zumba in the park session from 8:30 - 10:00. I went and it was a lot of fun - even though it was hot and I was pretty tired afterwards. I was amazed at how many calories the Spark people calorie counter said that I burned. I hope the city puts on some more free Zumba events.

Zumba is amazing! My mom talks about it all the time. I still haven't gone to a class myself but I know I will love it. Wow that um race sounds pretty brutal. I can see someone losing their toenails. It must feel really good to finish though.

Thoughts I had Today While Exercising

Friday, May 20, 2011

Today I lifted weights and did hills on the treadmill. As I was doing this, my eyes would continually look to see how many calories I was burning. I was wondering if by I would burn as many calories walking hills as when I do a slow jog. I have also been trying the last few days to record how much food I am consuming. Anyway, I began to think about how much I must exercise to burn off the calories I consume. What an eye opener!!! I am sure I have thought about this before but I was reminded that exercise and calories are intertwined. I am sure that as I go about today that I will give considerable thought to whether or not that cookie or candy bar is worth at least 15 minutes of hills on the treadmill.

First 10K Virtual Race

Friday, April 15, 2011

This morning I completed my first 10k virtual race in 84 minutes. That is about a 14 minute mile. Wanted to have a faster time but overall very pleased that I finished the 10K. I actually thought about not even doing it until I remember that I talked my sister into signing up for the race and how mad she would be if I did not keep true to my word.

I am a little sore from this experience since it is tax season and I have not exercised for the past two weeks. Usually the last few days of tax season are very stressful - with all the extensions that need to be completed and returns that need to be finished etc. Amazingly, I felt good all day today and I think it was because I was happy I kept me word and completed the race. emoticon

Time to Recommit

Wednesday, March 09, 2011

Today I am getting back on track. I had a 5 day period where I was being very good about keeping track of exercise and food intake. Five days is very good for me. Then the weekend happened and we went out to eat on Saturday and Sunday. I baked a cake for a co-worker for her birthday. The combination of work schedule during tax season, late nights, and the feeling of no time has caused me to fall into old habits.

I have five dollars in my piggy bank and I really want to buy a lens for my camera. So starting today I am recommitting to tracking every thing. Wish me luck. Hopefully, I will do it for longer than five days this time.
