It was a brisk this morning. It was only 28° this morning when I left the house for the Cherry Creek Sneak 5 mile run. The cold didn't really excite me. I was feeling a little tightness in my glutes and hamstrings from yesterday's run and was a little concerned that my muscles wouldn't warm sufficiently. Why was race day going to be cold?!
Hat, gloves, fleece - bundled up and warm!
It's been 16 years since I've run this race. Way too long and for whatever reason I let myself go over those years. That is the past and this morning I made it to the race and a little cold weather wasn't going to stop me.

I think waiting for the race to start was most agonizing. It just allowed those negative thoughts to flow in and take over. It was a good thing my wife was there with me encouraging me. Finally I just put my ear buds in and put on some good music and got in the right frame of mind for the race.

Finally the race started. I felt good and energetic, then about 1/2 mile into the race, my left hamstring balled up and it felt like an electric shock coursing down my leg and up to my lower back. Ahhhh!
I had to slow and see if I could stretch it out. I tried to stretch it some and then just walked slowly. It was painful, but finally just told myself I had to do this, so I just started with a slow short paced jog. Eash step hurt. I hit mile 1 at about 13.45 which was almost 2 minutes slower than the pace I was hoping to keep.
The hamstring pain was still there, but as my body got warmer I started to notice it less and less. At about 1.5 miles I was able to start pushing it again and finished the 2nd mile at a 12.30 pace. By 2.5 miles I was feeling good. I still couldn't sprint and push like I wanted to, but I was running good clips and actually finished mile 4 at an 11:15 pace! I had hoped to finish the race in under an hour and I still had a chance to get there.
I came around the corner and could see the finish line and finally made a hard push...59:39 was my finishing time!
5 miles completed! Goal Accomplished!
I'm so overjoyed! Another goal accomplished. It's amazing the power of putting down goals and letting people know so you can be accountable to those goals! Thanks to all my Spark Friends who have encouraged me and kept me accountable!
Next up - rehab and rest for my hamstring. It's a very sore right now. I have to figure out how to get it strong and limber. I have to get back to serious weight loss again and figuring out how to make my body more flexible and limber. I still have close to 40 lbs I want to lose.
More goals to attack, but today, just some rest and celebration! Keep pushing Sparkers! See you at the finish line!
