My Brother is a true Hero!

Thursday, June 23, 2011

This is a hero story, all he said to us was "yeah somebody was on the ground, I helped him out till the ambulance came by"

WINNIPEG - A Cornwall man is being called a hero after he helped save a fellow runner’s life in Sunday’s Manitoba Marathon.

Shawn Crockett, 48, was about halfway through the half-marathon when he came across a man who had collapsed.

“As I went by a woman was calling 911 ... they rolled him over ... and said he had no pulse, so I just started doing CPR,” Crockett said Wednesday from his home in Cornwall.

“I think the training kicked in. I’ve been taking first aid courses since I was about 18 years old.”

The man, who is reported to be in his 40s or 50s, suffered a cardiac arrest. Thanks to the quick thinking of Crockett and the fast paramedic response, he survived and is now recovering in hospital.

Marathon medics put a plea out Wednesday morning to local media in hopes of finding the Good Samaritan who continued his run after paramedics took over. In all the commotion, the hero’s name or marathon number was never noted.

Crockett was identified before noon, and will now be receiving an award from the Manitoba Marathon for his efforts.

“It was nice that he helped a fellow man, and a fellow runner,:” said Gerry Desjardins, command centre medical dispatcher with the Manitoba Marathon.

“When this gentleman gets out of the hospital, boy is he going to be happy.”

Crockett was in Winnipeg for a family reunion, and about a dozen of his family members were involved in marathon events. He said the experience was “surreal.”

“There was a lot of adrenaline, a lot of emotion,” he said. “I’m just glad the gentleman’s fine. One of the things I was thinking when I was running the last half was, ‘I hope somebody would stop for me if something ever happened to me.’”

Once his identity became known on Wednesday, Crockett was surprised by all of the attention.

“It’s amazing how many phone calls have been coming today,” he said. “It’s very strange for me. I try to be a low-key person and stay out of the spotlight. This is just a little overwhelming today.”

Crockett, who is a technical instructor with NAV Canada, is required to take first aid courses for his job.

This isn’t the first time he’s had to use CPR on a stranger — several years ago he helped save a man’s life in Cornwall.

Things that make you go WTF?

Monday, December 27, 2010

I don't usually give too much thought in what other people do to themselves as long as it doesn't effect Children, Me or Mine. If it effects one of those I may have a few words to say.

What I read online today just floored me. Why would anybody do this to themselves on purpose and brag about it? And tell me why I would want to watch this person eat?

N.J. woman enjoys 30,000-calorie holiday dinner
By QMI Agency

And you thought you were feeling full after your holiday meals.

A New Jersey mother who is trying to become the fattest woman in the world sat down for a 30,000-calorie Christmas dinner over the weekend.

Donna Simpson ate for two straight hours, the U.K.'s Daily Mail newspaper reported.

She ate two 25-pound turkeys, two maple-glazed hams, 15 lbs. of potatoes, five loaves of bread, 5 lbs. of herb stuffing, four pints of gravy, four pints of cranberry dressing and 20 lbs. of vegetables.

After that main course, Simpson also ate a "salad" of marshmallows, cream cheese, whipped cream and cookies.

"I eat as much as I want, whenever I want, but at this time of year I really go all out," she told the newspaper.

She also told the U.K.'s Sunday Mirror, "People who feel guilty about eating are hilarious."

Simpson holds the Guinness World Record for being the world's largest mother and has said she wants to become the fattest woman in the world.

People can sign up and pay to watch her eat online. Her website says her favourite food is sushi.

That poor lady! I think it's one thing to engage in self-destructive behavior and acknowledge it's a problem. It's quite another to embrace it and deny that it is killing you! Do you think she would get the same media coverage if she did the same thing with alcohol or heroin. WTF is right!

It`s Friday afternoon and I am bored ramblings.

Friday, August 27, 2010

It`s good thing that I work from home and there is nobody to check up on me. I hope that there is nobody from my head office on this site, because today was a total goof off day for me. Not to worry though as I am sure that there will be another day where I will put in 14-18 hours of work. It all averages out in the long run.

I have been easy going on tracking my food these days. My weight did creep up to 225 for a week or 2, but is now back down to 215-220. I can go up or down 5 lbs very quickly. I am starting to wonder if I will ever reach 210 though. I feel good now and the 210 was just to see if I could. Once I start getting into the high milage training for the Rome Marathon I might see my weight drop a bit more.
I am not going to beat myself up if I never hit that 210 mark as I always use that as an excuse not to have the Ice Cream or that extra slice of Pizza. Yes, I make excuses to myself on why I should not have the extra calories. Speaking of Pizza, I ran into the guy who owns the pizza join that Loreen and usually use. He sees me and tells me I lost a lot of weight. Yup, I have. Then he says I guess that is why you are not ordering pizza every week anymore. Yup, he`s right. Then he tells me that we can order custom made low calorie pizzas if we give him a days notice. Soooo pizza might be a treat every second week.

Well it is almost time to pick up Loreen from work so we can go to Yoga tonight. Should be a good class. Loreen and I have a 12 mile run scheduled for tomorrow. I still cannot believe that Loreen is running and not only that running 12 miles. She is doing amazing and I like the extra time we get to spend together. Running a marathon together in Rome should be a blast.

So I am going to take off now. Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Later
Scott

Ok, I am jealous that you do not have difficulty losing the 5 you put on - but I guess that is the difference between guys and gals - or at least you and me.
I put 5 on over the summer and now am trying to work my a$$ off, literally.
Have a great time on your run with Loreen - she is a real inspiration!

The stupid stuff I get talked into

Monday, May 24, 2010

I have been traveling for most of May and have one more trip this week starting on Wednesday and home on Saturday afternoon. I don't mind traveling for the month of May as Loreen also travels this month and is gone for the entire month. It can be tough, but it puts food on the table and we live a pretty good life.

So what have I been doing. It is finally starting to warm up in Yellowknife. I could actually where shorts outside today. I needed a polar fleece, but I was wearing shorts and sandals. One of the perks of working from home (when I am home) is that I get to dress the way I want to. I dread the day we get video conferencing.

I got the Insanity DVD's the other day and have been giving them a try. I am a fairly fit guy and I though I was going to puke more then once. I was trying to keep up with one of people on the DVD. Yeah I am not competitive. Scott you dummy those people have trained for months to do that DVD. You just started. However I like the program so far.

Pulled my bike out of storage this weekend as well. Gave it a good cleaning and a couple of shots of oil. Good to go. I have a sore butt now because I am not use the seat yet this year. Spent about an hour on it today pedaling down the highway.

And now the stuff I get talked into. I ran a marathon in New Orleans for the company I work for about 10 years ago. We had to raise money for Diabetes research as this disease is rampant in the communities that we serve. Anyways we have been doing this for 10 years now and the CEO decided that we should hold a 10 year alumni run. So I get asked if I will run again. Not a problem. I am looking forward to the run as it is in Rome and Loreen said she would try and run it as well. After I picked up my jaw from the floor as this is the girl who said she hated to sweat. Oops getting off topic here. So part of the run is to raise funds for diabetes. Ok fine. I have no problem going after people for money if they owe it to the company or myself. But I hate asking for money, it rubs me the wrong way, but it is for a good cause the amount is only 3 grand. 3 grand and my way is paid to Rome, that's a pretty good deal I think. So I have been thinking about ways to fund raise and my boss asks me if I will join him in a fund raising venture. Here the part that I got talked into. My Boss and I are going to let employees tear a strip off us at our yearly company wide conferance. For the meager sum of 10 dollars per strip we are going to have our backs waxed for diabetes. I know some of you women are going big freaking deal we have our bikini areas waxed all the time. My back is bigger then your bikini area and there is probably a lot more hair as well. Plus I am a wuss and I think that this is going to hurt......alot

Well I must go and put in a quick run tonight.

Take care

Scott

I guess you'll find out who your enemies are. They'll be buying lots of strips... and pulling very s l o w l y.

PS - Had an aunt who did the Team in Training. One of the methods she had for raising funds was to call the local community groups (Elks, VFW, Rotarians, etc), and ask if she could give a short presentation about Leukemia and ask for support. Since you're running for diabetes, you could really raise awareness in your community.

So... how do you get in on a fundraising marathon in a different country? By Rome, I guess I assumed you meant Rome, Italy and not Rome, NY. I'm a sucker for fundraising (okay, and you might have hit my favorite cause), so if you send me a link I'll totally donate, WITHOUT any wax involved. : )

Well there is no going back now.

Saturday, May 08, 2010

As I have lost weight I have been going back to some of my old smaller dress pants for work, Today I took all my "large" pants in to have altered. So there is no going back to being the big guy. You can make the clothing smaller but you cannot make it larger.

The seamstress asked me how much I weight I lost and when I told her she said that I lost 1/2 her body weight. How the hell does anybody only weigh 90lbs. She was tiny but jeez I have a leg that weighs more then she does.

I also went and bought a new jacket. Tried on the X-large first as I am still a fairly big guy through out my chest. It fit but the gut was way too big. The large was OK through the chest, but the stomach part actually loose as well. I will never be a medium because of my shoulders and chest, but I bet I could have fit a medium over my stomach. Loreen keeps telling me I have to get my clothing custom made. Might have to check that out some day.

I have been a bachelor for the past week and will be for another 2 weeks as Loreen is traveling. But that is OK as I leave tomorrow and I am on the road for 2 weeks and then home for a couple of days and gone again. Our secret to a happy marriage, never see each other. I do miss her, but don't tell her or she will get all mushy on me.

Well I must go. I put off cleaning up the living room and the bathroom to go for a run and now it has to be done. This is why I miss Loreen. This is her part of the chores, but on the other hand it's not like she does the laundry when I am gone. She just lets it pile up till I get home. I am so dead when she gets home.

Take care
