People are talking!!!

Saturday, June 19, 2010

I had to share an experience I had yesterday at work. As an optician, I spend the day helping people with their eyewear, which includes fixing problems.
Yesterday a very nice lady (who I had never seen before) came to the office in need of a repair, which I was able to do quite easily. As I was cleaning her lenses she introduced herself as a new Doctor at the clinic where I go. Then she asked, "are you the one who they are talking about, who lost all the weight? They say you did it all by yourself."
Needless to say, I was more than a little shocked! All I could think of right away was to say, "ya, I guess that would be me." Real bright answer, right? LOL
She then proceeded to ask all kinds of questions about what I had done, how much I have lost, how long, etc. so she could "pass the information on to her patients". Of course, out came a "You Have Been Sparked" card from my wallet ( I always have some with me now) and I told her as much as I could considering were standing in the middle of the optical dispensery.
She thanked me for fixing her glasses and the information, said she would be back again, and left me with my mouth still open in surprise.
I guess what the Sparkguy says is true - you never know who your life will touch!

What a wonderful opportunity -- I'll bet the doctor passes on the info to several of her patients who need it: and what great recognition for you!! You deserve it, that's for sure!!

WooHoo! That is so awesome and I'm glad she was interested in getting it straight from you! Excellent. As an aside, your new goals sound great. I'll be turning 60 next month and I have but one desire for that date, I want to finally have a smaller number for the waist than I am old.

Great week!

Sunday, May 30, 2010

I had a very productive week and am really feeling like I can be more active.
Since I had my knee scoped on the 20th of May, it feels much better. I waited a week and started riding my recumbent bike again, with much less pain. I even went walking for a few minutes and didn't have to stop to let it feel better!
Yesterday, I sealed and stained my deck and planted my vegetable garden. I have never planted anything before, so I'm guardedly hopeful for fresh produce this summer. If not there is always the farmers market.
After church today I will pull my old bike out of storage and get it ready to ride. If I can stay upright, I will be able to add some more outdoor cardio to my routine.
Since my office is closed tomorrow for Memorial Day, I plan to do some fishing. With any luck at all I should be eating fresh walleye for dinner tomorrow night. If not, I will have some nice quiet time outdoors.
Finally, when I weighed in this morning, I lost more weight. I am now below what I weighed when I graduated from high school in the late sixties.
I am very thankful for such a wonderful week and wish the same for everyone.

Congratulations on your hard earned success and revamped knee and exercise plans. I hope that your garden is productive and you reap the benefits of gardening both mentally and physically. Thanks for the goodie, if I wasn't such a tightwad, I'd go buy me some new walking shoes today but instead I'll probably just think about it and keep wearing the old ones a bit longer. Have a great weekend and good fishing!

It is hard to go slow now!!

Sunday, May 23, 2010

I feel GREAT!!!! I am so amazed at how good my knee feels already (had the arthroscopic surgery 3 days ago) that every time I look at my recumbent bike, I have to fight the urge to hop on and ride it! LOL It is going to be a long 10 days until I see the Dr. and get official approval to get back to it. In the meantime, I will do some walking outside, clean up my old (real)bike and get ready to go outdoors to ride.
Of course, I will be doing my other activities. I can still strength train and keep up the core exercises. In fact, I did that the day after the surgery with no problems!
I left the surgery center on crutches, but went to a cane the next day. Today I can't seem to find the cane and am walking almost normally with no assistance. I was planning to take it to work on Monday (just for sympathy - HAHA) but that isn't going to happen.
I am positive that the leading contributor to such a fast and pain free recovery is all the work I did before hand to strengthen the muacles in my legs. Being fit really does pay dividends!
A big thanks to all you spark friends and all who gave me well wishes and encouragement and prayed for me. Your support is wonderful.
Oh! by the way, I weighed in this morning and am now down by 126 pounds!

It's wonderful to hear you are doing so well post-op. I'm sure all the preparation you did is what is making your recovery so "easy" for you. Enjoy your new found healthy knee, and be sure to force yourself to go slow until the Dr. clears you to do otherwise. Many people don't follow their doctor's orders and end up hurting themself because they feel like they can do more than the doctor advised.

That is totally awesome!! You should feel great. A lot of the pain relief also comes from not carrying around all that weight!!! You actually lost more than my 19 year old daughter weighs!!!!! WTG!!! What an inspiration you are. Thanks for sharing!! emoticon

Knee surgery yesterday - workout today!!

Friday, May 21, 2010

I had my arthroscopic surgery on my right knee yesterday morning. Everything went very well and I left the surgery center at 3:20 PM. The Doctor told me I could put as much weight on the leg as I was comfortable with as soon as I could. I was using crutches for the rest of the day, but switched to a cane this morning.
Since I was feeling good and today is my day for upper body strength training, I borrowed my brother in law's dumbells and did 8 of the 10 exercises I had scheduled (with some modifications due to the equipment). It felt so good, that I actually walked (pretty slowly and with the cane) for 10 minutes.
It looks like my rehab and recovery is going to be very rapid. I can hardly wait to get back at it full strength!!!

Wonderful that it went so well!!!

Doctor week for me!

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

This morning I will make the 2 1/2 hour drive from home to Fargo, ND for a bone density scan and to visit with my friend about lab results from the physical he gave me last Friday. Then tomorrow morning my sister and brother in law will take me to the orthopedic center for my knee surgery. I thank God that they live there so I can stay with them after.
I am having arthroscopic surgery to clean all the "junk" out of the joint, so it is same day surgery and the recovery time should be short.
I am praying it helps with pain and movement. I have my old bike (that I haven't been on in years) just screaming for attention. LOL
By Saturday or Sunday, I should be back home preparing to rehab and really up my activity level.
