Mixed Emotions

Sunday, April 18, 2010

Today I feel really good - and then again, I feel bad. How can that be?
First the bad. The two week old knee injury I got while working out just isn't getting as much better as fast as I had hoped. I still can't do much for lower body strength training, and riding my recumbent bike is impossible (yes - I had to try yesterday just to prove that I am stupid LOL). I'm still wandering around on crutches and really tired of the pain.
Now that the "pitty party" is over, I DO have something to feel good about.
I can do all of my upper body strength training, so I am getting some exercise. And walking with crutches is also a good workout!
On Thursday I had my regular lab work and then a visit with the Dr. After reviewing the results, he took me off all remaining blood sugar meds, cholestoral meds and cut my last blood pressure med in half!!
On my way out of the clinic, I ran into a nurse I had a few years ago in cardiac rehab. She almost didn't recognize me!! She said she could hardly wait to get back to the unit to tell the other nurses about me. That was really an enjoyable visit.
On Friday night our local Lions club had our annual fund raiser (I had to be there since I'm the president). There was wonderful homemade food prepared by the members, a recipe book of the items there as a gift to each preson that attended, lots of good wines, live entertainment, and a silent auction. I did my thing to welcome everyone, then sat back with my bottle of water and watched while everyone ate, drank, and enjoyed the evening. I haven't gotten a count on how much money we raised as yet, but the turnout was good so I think we did quite well.
Oh, by the way - I also lost another 2 pounds last week to get my total so far to 119!!!!
Looking back on the week, I'm feeling better!

It looks as if you are recovering nicely - maybe not the pace you want, but at the pace your body needs. :) It's ok to take it easy sometimes (though I do understand how you can feel out of sorts and frustrated when body parts don't listen to your brain) :)
I'm glad you're moving right along!

11 months today - What happened?

Saturday, April 10, 2010

On May 10, 2009 I started my journey with SparkPeople, searching for a way to finally lose weight. Now, 11 months later, I have lost 117 pounds, reduced pants size by 14 inches, and wear shirts without a big X (or several X's) attached to the size! The biggest question I hear now - and ask myself -is "How did this happen?"
My friends, coworkers , and certainly my Doctors are absolutely amazed! Their amazement is only exceeded by my own.
My energy has increases greatly, I have had my medications for blood sugar and blood pressure cut in half, and except for a recent knee injury while working out, my mobility is dramatically better. I am actually looking forward to my next scheduled lab work (later this week) to see how much more of the medications I can get rid of!!!
I feel like an advertisement for SP, goal setting, smart eating and exercise habits, and personal commitment. I will tell anyone who asks all about what I am doing and have done. I make an effort every day to spread the Spark.
And talk about comments!!! I get compliments from people I don't even know, but must have met along the way, about how I have changed.
My friends joke that if I was in one of those weight loss ads on TV, they would have to put the disclaimer "results not typical" at the bottom of the screen. While I still consider myself a work in progress, and what I have accomplished might be amazing to some, it just shows that with the right mind set, great tools to build on ( like "The Spark" and SparkPeople), and the true desire to make changes, we can all reach our goals.
"Results Not Typical"? Perhaps. "Results DOABLE"? ABSOLUTELY!

Third day WITHOUT a workout!!

Wednesday, April 07, 2010

I think I'm having fittness withdrawl!!!!! The only workout I have had since Saturday is getting around with the help of the borrowed walker I am using after injuring my knee (while working out).
I can't get onto my exercise machine or ride my recumbent bike, so I have resorted to isometrics and resistant bands for upper body. That is better than nothing but FAR from what I am used to.
I did get in to see my orthopedic surgeon yesterday and found no further damage to the bones in the knee. Just soft tissue inflamation and fluid. So after having it drained and a cortizone injection, I'm back home hoping it will heal quickly.
It does bend a little more today and I finally got some sleep last night. But I still can't put any weight on the leg, so I have a ways to go yet.
I would like to thank everyone who has given me so much support and encouragement. It means a lot to me knowing you are out there and so willing to help!!

I just read your most recent blog and a few of these about your knee. So sorry to hear of this setback. I had some problems with my knees after losing weight. Now this has NOT been medically told to me and I am not saying this medically to you, but it might not hurt for you to use compression knee pads for a while. I found that because of the weight loss my knee area had more room to slip around in (all that fat gone, that kept things in place, just made the area looser...I told you it wasn't medical, just my observation). You don't want to wear them all the time, but while doing things when your knees feel like they may be vulnerable. Wearing them all the time will make the muscles around your knees weaker so you do need to do somethings to help keep them strong, but, like I said, wear when you could be putting that area at risk of too much movement, especially side to side. Just my thought on this. I know it helped me.
Hope you get back up on both feet (and knees) real soon. You have come a long way and your story is inspirational!

My terrible weekend

Monday, April 05, 2010

I started my weekend with great expectations for a wonderful Easter weekend. That came to a very sudden stop during my usual morning workout!! As I was doing my lsat set of knee bends, I heard (and really felt) something pop in my right knee!! The pain was brief but very intense.
By noon, it was very swelled and the pain was so bad that I would not put any weight on my right side. late afternoon I got a ride to the ER where got a shot and some pills for pain and the wonderful advice that I should see my orthopedic Dr. on Monday.
So, using a borrowed walker as crutches, I hobbled around home all day Sunday and am now waiting for the clinic to open so I can call and see when I can be seen.
This may just move up the time frame on the replacement surgery that I was planning for this summer. Hopefully I will find out more later today.

Greg ... I'm so sorry to hear about your mishap. I hope you get in to see a doctor quickly and he can offer you some relief. I also have knee replacement surgery on the horizon, I just don't know when. I broke my tibia plateau in a motorcycle accident in '95. Two surgeries later I was told the damage I did to my knee is beyond repairable, I need a total knee replacement but I should hold off as long as I can ... to age 60 if at all possible. I have good days and bad days but am still holding off ... I don't turn 60 until Sep '13.

Congratulations on all the weight you have lost. The difference between the picture at your nieces wedding and your profile picture is nothing short of remarkable! Keep up the good work, and good luck with your knee surgery.

Less weight - Smaller clothes - More comments

Sunday, March 21, 2010

I finally got the new pants I had ordered (and had to exchange for smaller ones ) last week. They are just a little snug, but work fine. I don't mind the fit because I know they won't be snug for long. After all, they are size 34 waste!! 10 1/2 months ago I was squeezing into size 48!!! Shirts are a very comfortable XL now instead of the XXXL of old!
Today's weigh-in showed a loss of another 4 pounds (now a total of 108).
The positive comments just keep on coming!! When people see me, I hear comments like "you look great" or "you have lost a LOT of weight", and the same question always comes up - "What are you doing?"
I am not writing this to brag. I am so amazed at what has happened that I needed to put it down and read it myself!! LOL
I guess I am living proof that with the great resources and people associated with SP, anyone can make the changes they are looking for.
