Down to Earth and Back on Track

I had the most amazing 5 weeks with our son's family, including now 3 year old Emily and now 5 month old Lucy. I got to care for Lucy for those first four weeks our daughter-in-law was back at work. When I returned home my arms felt quite empty. Still having 22 month old Ziva nearby helps a lot. Her big brothers, now 7 and 8 are not available to me quite as much. Since returning home we soon had overnight house guests twice and then we took a week long road trip across a couple of states to meet up with our son's family in San Francisco. It was a very fun trip and I got in a lot of exercise incidental to exploring downtown San Francisco. Though I grew up across the bay from there, my treks to the city were mostly to the Fisherman's Warf area and directly to the theater district. We stayed just a few steps from the theater district and explored Chinatown up the street. We hadn't been there since college. It was all so much fun. We also spent a few days near my mom-in-law in the San Jose area and I spent one night with my mom about 40 miles north of there. It was such a packed week. It's still hard for me to believe we did it all. Just a couple of years ago I couldn't have imagined having enough stamina or balance or strength. The ms is still an issue, but I've been blessed to do again many things that have been out of the picture for a long time. I managed to not gain weight during any of these adventures or having company here. But, I also didn't lose any. So, it's back to the work of paying better attention to tracking and keeping after the diet and exercise. I have another trip to CA planned for Christmas and it is my goal to lose at least 10 pounds between now and then. I know I can do it! ...... emoticon

24 days gone 8 glorious ones to go!

For more than three weeks I've been so blessed to be with our son's family in beautiful Seattle. I'm here to take care of our new granddaughter, Lucy. But, I also get to spen some really special times with their almost three year old, Emily. She goes to daycare in an amazing facility in the building where our dil works. We've done some hiking, but mostly I've been babysitting most every day, including weekends. I ache everywhere, but it has been so worth it. I can recall how much exercise it took when I had two small children of my own. Of course I was much stronger then. The MS hadn't gotten as out of control yet and I definitely had youth on my side. I so appreciate being able to help our son. It is such a joy to watch this little family function. I will miss them so much when I return home. But, for now I intend to enjoy every moment or cuddles, kisses and exercising muscles I've not focused on in awhile. After next Saturday I will get back to my life and spending whatever time I can with our daughter's family that lives only about 40 minutes from us rather than two days away as this is. Every day brings new blessings, new opportunities to make more special memories. One day if I am again limited to wheels or have other issues that keep me down, I will have this time to bring smiles at every remembrance. Have a great weekend everyone!

    Ahhh... the glory of being able to spend time with family, and especially grandchildren, is so special! And to be able to help with a newborn is such a beautiful experience. My DH is now helping our daughter with her 3-month old and he comes home everyday just beaming about the experience.

Enjoy, and savor, your final week-plus with your son and his fine family.

Barefoot and Broken

So, last week I broke a toe. Actually my grandson jumped on it and there it went. Of course this happened just as I was really getting into a good stair workout. Then I caught some sort of weird 'bug' that left me down with high fever for three days. I hate summer extra aches just when I want to be out and about. I'm making a comeback, though. The buddy-taped toe has lots of blood draining back into the foot. Looks kind of strange, but the healing is happening. That's all I care about. Meanwhile, I've taken up boxing on the Wii. Another little something our grandson introduced us to. It is so much fun and I get a really good upper body workout. Last night I even knocked out my dh! Does that mean he's now broken, too? emoticonHave a great summer everyone. We finally have hot, hot weather here so when I do get out I try to get out early and then hibernate somewhere in the AC. emoticonOh, yes, I'm not going to play any Wii games barefoot with my 6 year old grandson.   I also read your blog because of the title, and I smiled and applauded. I've been pretty bad about exercising, but I'm trying to build more movement into things. Seeing the chiro made me feel like I can move again.
My only broken toe was my own fault. I kicked my daughter's very solid wood toy box when she was little. She's 35 now! I still remember it. God bless. :)

    I had a broken toe last month, and Katie (DD12) had a jammed toe and her friend had a broken toe. Is this National Broken Toe Month or something?? I hope it's over!

  Sorry about your toe. I hear alot about the Wii. Would like to have one myself but will probably be obsolete soon with the way technology keeps changing.

Need more Stairs...

After meeting my newest granddaughter I was quickly reminded that I need more stair workouts. Our son's house has three floors, all of which are very much in use. In fact, you enter on the first floor - music room, laundry 1/2 bath, mud room. The living area, kitchen, dining are on middle level (no bathroom there). The bedroom and two more baths are at the top. So, with a newborn and a 2 1/2 year old I was up and down a lot. I really felt how out of shape those muscles are. So, on the flight home I prayed that I would be in better shape for August when I return for four weeks and four days to care for the children the first few weeks our daughter-in-law is back to work. Well, the Lord certainly has a sense of humor. We arrived back to our condo to discover that the elevator to my parking area will be out of service for the next few weeks awaiting parts and repairs. Now, every time I come in or out I have to go up or down at least two flights and if I'm ambitious I can do all seven. The shorter routes take me to another parking level or lobby level to cross over to another elevator. Because my parking is the deepest, only one elevator actually goes all the way down to it. Every day offers new opportunities. Yesterday I was up and down four times. Puff, puff! Hopefully I will be in shape for those stairs when I go back to tend those little girls. emoticon

    Hey Barbara, I bet you enjoyed every minute with that new little baby and the 2 1/2 year old grandchild! Stairs! I understand the problem! My kids have stairs too, and they are a big challenge for me. My arthritic knees do not do well when I have to do stairs. But, I do them because I cherish my time with our grandchildren and their parents. Sounds like you will be able to do the stairs much better by August! ~hugs~ Nancy

  Stairs are a great work out! They use so many muscles and it's a great cardio if you jog up and down. Two years ago I stayed in a hotel in San Diego that had the slowest elevator ever! We were on the 11th floor and I decided to just use the stairs. My legs were jello practically the whole time we were there but I felt fit. Keep up your stair work out and you'll be glad you did!

Oops, what happened?

I thought I was going the right way again after adjusting thyroid medication. But, when I hopped on the scale yesterday and today it told a different story. Now, I'm wondering if I haven't been drinking enough water and retaining some. So, my next plan is to really focus on getting all the fluid I think I need and then add a bit more because it's now summer. Hopefully, by the time I get home from meeting my new granddaughter this weekend I will see that the water has come off. At least that's my current plan! Hope everyone is having a great week!

    Fluid retention gets me in Summer months as well...yes, I need the reminder to drink my water as well...enjoy the new grandbaby!!!! emoticon

    Awww, enjoy new little Baby Lucy!! It is so much fun to meet a new grand baby!!

It is really HOT and HUMID here, upper 90's! I am retaining fluid too, I am sure it is from the weather. Lots of water should help a lot!
