Surprisingly Good Dessert

Saturday, March 20, 2010

After watching Good Eats tonight, I decided to try one of the recipes with a couple little alterations. The recipe was bacon topped with brown sugar and crushed walnuts, baked in the oven. Sounds kind of weird, right? But hey, I trust Alton Brown...every one of his recipes I've tried has turned out great.

I wasn't sure what I did was going to work, though, because these are the alterations I made: I used pre-cooked microwavable bacon and Splenda Brown Sugar Blend, and cooked the whole thing in the microwave for forty seconds.

Anyway, it worked! Not only that, but it was WONDERFUL, with a really nice balance of sweet, salty, and crunchy...I haven't figured out the exact calorie count yet, but it shouldn't be too bad either--80 calories of bacon, 10 calories of Splenda, and the one thing I'm not sure about was the 3/4 teaspoon of crushed walnuts, but that really shouldn't put it over the top or anything.

Of course it's not something I would eat every day, since bacon has a high fat content, but this did make a pretty nice treat!

I think my husband saw that episode because I remember him asking me if I thought bacon, nuts and brown sugar would be good. I was like "huh??" I'll be sure to tell him that someone has tried it and liked it! Thanks for sharing!

Sounds weird but sooo nice! *Licks lip* Everything with bacon end up nice, sadly. XD

Oh and, thanks for your comment at my blog! (^_^)

I think because the competition is really great in Singapore (3 universities, a lot of local and foreign students), the grade needed for us Polytechnic students to be accepted just get higher each time. While for the High School/Junior College students they can easily get enrolled with their "A" Levels cert.

For a Business student, they need at least a GPA of 3.7 to get into a local Uni.

If I really can't get into a local Uni, then I might consider overseas. But I want to get into a local Uni firstly due to school fees. My dad got retrenched late last year. If I get into the degree for Teachers, the government would pay my school fees. So I'm aiming that. X)

It's Unbelievable! Citibank is the Best!

Thursday, March 18, 2010

After a call to Citibank, I now have my old interest rate back! After it was pointed out that what they had done was no longer legal, and that no, I did not get a notice mailed to me in December with my statement because I get PAPERLESS statements and that was impossible, the completely unexpected happened...they gave me back my 15% interest rate AND said they would credit back the extra interest I had already paid.

Well, I guess there's something to be said for getting a card from a reputable company after all. Something like this never would have happened with my old cards from 1st Financial or HSBC (well, the part where they would try to screw me over would have happened, but not the second part where they actually fixed it).

So things are looking up today ^_^

APR Went from 15% to 25% for NO REASON.

Thursday, March 18, 2010

Arrgh...you know, the last time I began a blog this way, it was when they cut my hours at work. Apparantly, financial troubles turn me into some sort of pirate.

Damnit. They raised the interest on my credit card from 15% to %25 for no reason except that they could. I've been paying it on time every month! I even checked out my credit reports and there are no negatives on any of them.

Okay, I think once I paid it maybe one day late, so maybe that's where this is coming from, but I actually think this might have happened because I've had the card for exactly 2 years this month, and something in my agreement that I probably didn't read probably said that they could arbitrarily change my APR at the end of every year for no reason to whatever they want...plus all that new legislation is about to go into affect, and they're trying to pull as much as they can while it's still legal...which really sucks for me.

At this rate, I feel like I'm never going to get out of debt, I'm never going to be able to move out of my parents' house, and my adult life is never going to really begin...

What the heck has happened to the world that it's just so hard to even get started anymore? I don't even know what to do at this point. I certainly can't afford the 25%, for starters. Maybe I can get another loan on my car to pay it off? Or sell the car...

Which would probably be kind of difficult right now. It's a TOYOTA.

Again, arrrghh!!!

Try calling the company too - you can tell ask them to lower your rate, see what they'll give you....and if it isn't what you want, then switch cards. Odds are, they'll lower your rate to keep your business. I routinely check my APRs on all cards - even those I don't carry a balance on. I have been able to lock all rates in at 8% or lower. Can't hurt to ask! If you want to find a different card, check out creditcards.com and it will help you find a card that you're looking for. Good luck!

That bites big time! Were you at least given the chance to close the credit card and keep the 15% interest rate? I've had my interest rates jacked up for no reason other than "because we can" on three accounts in the last year. Two of them were a significant increase like yours, but I had the option to close the accounts and convert them to a loan at the old interest rate. Which I did. Dang greedy money lenders!!! I love watching the Daily Show--and last night Jon Stewart was joking/talking about how if we could run our finances like corporations, we could get loans for anything and never pay them back because "we're too big to fail."

Hang in there!! Heck this economy has driven a lot of people BACK to parents' (or other relatives') homes. A lot of us are just hanging on by our toenails right now (me included). It will get better--eventually.

New PC/Still Trying to Get Back On Track

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Well, the new computer is all put together now. I ended up spending a lot more on it than I intended to, because every time I was choosing a component, inevitably I'd end up going with the slightly more expensive part that was always way better than the slightly less expensive one...I wasn't even planning on buying a graphics card, until I tried to play Mass Effect and discovered how awful the integrated one was (turns out it only had 256MB VRAM--even the menus in Mass Effect were slow with all the graphics settings on the lowest quality!). And so I bought a graphics card with 1GB VRAM which works much better ^_^

I'm on Spring Break now, but I have plenty of classwork to catch up with (sigh). I thought I might also be able to catch up with my diet, this week too, since I had gotten a little off track, but that's proven more difficult than I thought it would be. We went to the Movie Tavern again, and I ate spinach dip of unknown calories and way too many tortilla chips along with it, even though I had a granola bar in my purse -_-;; Today wasn't too bad, though. I've eaten within my calorie range, anyway.

Really, the hardest thing seems to be to get back into exercising again. Last night I tried a step aerobics DVD I got from Netflix, but I couldn't keep up with it...not only was it obviously not for beginners, the camera angles were awful and the girl who was supposed to be doing the modified steps was hardly ever shown! Oh well, at least I tried to keep up, and I probably did get an okay workout, even though all I was doing was running back in forth, tripping over the step...

Anyway, I still haven't given up. Usually I don't last a week whenever I decide to try to lose weight, and this time I've been at it for two and a half months so far, so I'm still convinced I'm going to reach my goal this time--maybe not as fast as I would have liked, but I'll get there.

Color Contacts, Computer Components, & Fear of Scales...

Thursday, March 11, 2010

I should be getting all the components for my new computer in tomorrow. I can't wait ^_^

I'm having a really hard time getting back to eating within my calorie range for weight loss. I've probably been doing fine for maintaining my current weight, but then again, I haven't weighed myself in a week, and I'm a little bit afraid to.

I went back to the optometrist and got some more color contact samples. I can't decide if I like any of them that much. They all just seem to mix into the hazel in my eyes. The most dramatic change in color came with the blue contacts, but I'm not that sure I care that much for having blue eyes. I guess I can keep them in mind in case I ever cosplay a character who has blue eyes, but I'm not sure I'd buy them for everyday wear. I just wish the violet or amethyst had worked better, I really wanted violet. Honey was just okay too, but the green was too close to my actual color, so that one was kind of pointless. I wonder if I should at least buy a box of the violet or the amethyst, because it might make a difference having the colored ontacts in both eyes...I also wonder if the actual product might be better quality (and a bit more opaque) than the demo lens.

I'm way off my calorie range, too. Dang those Girl Scouts! I hope to do better tomorrow! You will too, I'm sure!
