Songbird Therapy

Friday, March 29, 2013

The weather is lovely and warm-ish this morning and I decided to hang one load of laundry outside on a makeshift clothesline. (Yellow nylon rope that I string from a fence to my deck and back to another fence at a 45 degree angle.)

It was sunny and fresh... and quiet.

Listening to my neighbourhood waking up is a simple delight of mine. My little backyard is a hummingbird highway and whenever I sit in the sunshine, I listen for the hummers zipping back and forth with their unique chirping "song". We have hummingbirds in our neck of the woods ALL WINTER LONG. I know, it sounds improbable.

I've been told our other resident bird population is called the junko. I don't even know what their chorus can be identified by. I'll assign them the background filler harmonies.

I was listening to coo-ing, trills, chirps, high tweet tweet tweets and cheeps from our feathered friends.

Let me tell you how peaceful and lovely their avian choir sounded to me! I was happy and fulfilled just to be hanging out wet clothes! Imagine a warm sunshine on your back, a gentle breeze and songbird melodies.... How blessed I felt.

I'm calling it Songbird Therapy. The clean clothes are just a bonus to my guiltless pleasure in a tiny backyard. Yet, I have it all. The colourful bulbs are showing off, the fragrance of grass is teasing my nose and my ears enjoyed a delicate orchestra of wildlife in their nests.

You may love your video games, but I'll stick to my backyard choir!

A Weekend Of Resting Up

Sunday, March 24, 2013

Ever had one of those weekends where you felt burnt out? Just getting the simple stuff done was enough to rock you on your heels?
This weekend was a quiet one for us. Our visitors have gone home and we are just picking up after some days of fun hospitality... but I'm T-I-R-E-D!

If I sit down, I just want to sleep. Going for my walk was a real push this weekend.

I've had a hot bath, read a bit of a thriller novel and I'm sitting down again. Just pooped out.

Tonight will be an early off-to-bed sort of evening. Perhaps by tomorrow I will have the energy to face another week at the office.

I sure hope so....

Sometimes our bodies will tell us that we need rest when we don't give it enough. So rest well.

I can relate, I love company but after a day of it, I get so stressed out by being on top of things and alert to their needs, taht I cant wait for them to leave so I can lay down. Take a day of rest, you need it. Hope your feeling better after a day of rest. susana

Planning A Walk Alone

Sunday, March 17, 2013

Do you try to get your exercise with a buddy? I do.
The problem is, they can let you down ("got a cold", "I'm too tired", "It might rain") and then the temptation is to forego the activity.

NOT THIS GAL!

No partner-- NO PROBLEM.

I will undoubtedly walk faster and farther. I can plan to do another of my neighbourhood trash pick ups too. (Double walk). I will bring along a GREEN garbage bag and pick up fast food rubbish that litters my walk ways and totally frustrates me.

Happy St. Patrick's Day... and get outta my way!!!

The best walking buddy for me is Dora dog! She is always ready to go for a walk, even if we have just come back from one and I forgot to check the mail on the way back in, she's ready to go again.

Used to do that but after someone made fun of me and called me a Bag lady when I carted a whole bag of trash off the street. I gave up picking up trash further than my own front lawn! Your a brave soul!

when I was a kid we used to sweep the whole alleys and the gutters along the streets in front of our house, but people dont do that any more. I used to live in a very clean and caring city then! It was also safer to walk on the street then too; because more people were caring and out cleaning the street also! I wish to bring that back to our neighborhood... we truly had sweeps then!

I can clearly remember taking a push broom and sweeping up the whole street . Wouldnt it be nice if we can turn back the clock on some things! Then afterwards we would have cook outs or parties . Now it seems people want an entitlement before you can get them to clean up the neighborhood trash! They wnat a free meal "before" they will even join any group of people or do anything for the community or neighborhood! Pat yourself on your back. your one of a kind! susana

I did do double the activity that I would have done with my neighbour walking with me. I brought enough litter home, on my first walk, to fill 2 garbage bags AND later in the day, I walked another thousand steps around our neighbourhood.

It was a brilliant day and I loved having the sun in my face. emoticon

St. Patrick's Day Breakfast

Sunday, March 17, 2013

Who wants to try green eggs and ham?? Not me.
But tomorrow I will try a green smoothie.

I have a cup of Almond milk
I bought some baby spinach leaves
a banana shall be added
... and anything else I can think of-- I'll wait for the inspiration.

I'm not Irish and I'm not Catholic BUT I'll make sure to wear my green blouse in case I slop a little smoothie on my front. I'm very practiced at that.

Hey gang--- let's go GREEN on St. Patrick's Day.

I did make the spinach, almond milk and banana smoothie.
Too much banana taste, but I will try in again.

I'm thinking of changing the fruit to an orange. emoticon

Happy Weekend

Sunday, March 03, 2013

I spent my Saturday doing the home-ownership thing: I did loads of laundry, vacuumed thoroughly and got some groceries into the house. Usually one day of each weekend is taken up with some sort of housework.

I'm not complaining, believe me. I am a lucky lassie to have a warm, dry place to live. The neighbours are friendly and my 'hood is safe and quiet.

I visited a neighbour on Saturday morning to see if she needed anything in town-- she gets depressed and house bound often. I ended up taking her in my car to pick up her ulcer medication and I bought the groceries.

She decided she needed a new blender too, so I suggested a hardware store which was next door to a restaurant for lunch. (I didn't know she had skipped breakfast again, so my care taking instincts were spot on.) We got her blender and then she needed a coffee... which turned into a healthy breakfast after all. I was due for a lunch, so it all worked out.
It was a trip that did us good all the way 'round.

On Sunday, more of my house got painted inside. A corner fireplace (electric) got a darker coat of paint by five in the morning and we agreed it looked better in the Tomorrow's Taupe shade of light brown. Think "chocolate milk" and that will be close to one of my new colours.

Before lunch, my neighbour, Tom showed me how to trim back my red rose at the front of my house. Now I understand what he sees in pruning roses. Aaaah, I am still trainable.
I tried pruning two hydrangea bushes on the south side of my home. Tom gave me two thumbs up! Who knew the blossoms appear on new wood? All this time I had been afraid of trimming and killing them. But they are ready for spring now too.
My pruning nemesis is a weeping pussy willow tree in my backyard. That thing is so over-grown that it will take a month of weekends to open the branches up and allow a breeze to flow through it. (Right now it looks like a thatched umbrella!) All the branches are twisted and grotesque and I'm supposed to make a logical trimming of it???? Tom, are you kidding me??

I was assured that a few cuts this weekend and more work throughout the spring will be OK with that mangled mess of pussy willow. I am trusting my green thumbed neighbour on this one.

So, if you see a pruning sheer wielding gal who looks like she is bewildered with the amount of trimming to be done, you might be looking at me.

The way I ended my Sunday, was by getting some trimming done on my head of hair. I haven't had a proper hair cut in over a year. Who knew that I had waves in my hair?? I've always cut it too short to realize it. So I was coached today to use a hairdryer for a 50% drying and leave it to finish on its own. I can scrunch the ends for a natural wavy look. There is product out there to lock in the curl if I want to part with $16. Hmmm, no. Guess I'm cheaping out here, but I'll try the halfway dry advice and wait for a fifty percent sale sometime in the future.

All in all, quite a lot got done around here. I think I deserve a bubble bath before dinner.
That's what I call a happy weekend. How about you?

I need to get someone to show me how to take care of my bushes and trees. I just bought a house this summer. Now to learn to take care of it all properly!

Bright Blessings for a fantastic weekend!
