Day 6

Sunday, October 07, 2012

Here is the first weekend of this month. I went out with my neighbour, Shirley, and we did our little walk to McDonalds to have a tea. Then we walked back home. I remembered my pedometer and continued wearing it all through the day.

I helped do some leaf and pine needle raking and later, I got a few more groceries into the house for our Thanksgiving this Monday.

My step count was the best yet! 9310 steps, working out to 3.8 miles and 264 calories burned due to the activity.

Today I was asked if I wanted an ice cream cone because our weather was so unseasonably warm. My strategy today was to decline and explain that I'm walking to get in better shape. I didn't want to sabotage the effort with empty calories.

That decision was healthy for both of us!

Well now . . . . . emoticon !!!! Almost 10,000 steps -- that's great!! Kuddos on turning down the ice cream. You worked so hard to get all those steps and burn calories -- why ruin it with ice cream. Especially the way they scoop ice cream where I live - you ask for one scoop and end up with two!!! I've learned to ask for baby cones :-)

Day 5

Saturday, October 06, 2012

I'm getting caught up with my daily blog. That phone call threw my schedule into a tizzy last night.

So, today, my pedometer is reading 1745 steps
The distance for my stride length = 0.71 miles
The calorie burn for the day's walking..... (drum roll please) 49.4 calories.

With tomorrow being Saturday, my step count and activity level can only increase, right?

Today I failed in coming up with an original strategy for my October program. Day 5 was a happy day at work, but doing the company banking and picking up the mail etc. just doesn't add up to a huge amount of calorie burning activity.

I am not going to dispair over my lack of imagination. I plan on moving forward!!!

Even the best of plans don't always get accomplished. As long as you're trying to move more and eat less, you're on the right track. Marching in place is also great for balance. I had to do that after my knee replacements!

Thanks Lou, I hadn't thought of walking is place.

Good to hear from you too, Lita!

Keep looking for ways to get more steps in, even walking in place with as high knee raising as you can, and you'll find some way to increase your step totals. Hang in there. -- Lou

i suspect they are much better now...........
trial and error is such fun.......enjoy.....

Day 4

Saturday, October 06, 2012

Today's strategy was a little different. My dinner plate has been changed to a luncheon sized plate. It is so simpel to make it look full but with less food.

For the rest of the month, I want to use the luncheon plate and get accustomed to this portion size.

It's baby steps for me!

Talking of steps, I didn't walk as much as I wanted but a friend in need phoned and wanted to talk on the phone. That was my hour that sort of went down the drain.

I'll focus on the plate 'plan of action' and try to stay optimistic.

Using a smaller plate is an excellent idea. Another tool to help guide you on portion sizes, is using your hands. Put your hands together as if getting a drink of water from a stream. That's the size of your stomach!! Helps you to realize that portion sizes have gotten way out of control and you really don't need so much food!!

No movement today, but helping a friend is very important!

Day 3

Thursday, October 04, 2012

Last night after work we went to the rec centre pool! I wish I could say I did lengths and really out did myself... but that would be a lie.

We went into the wave pool, tried the water slide, enjoyed a few moments of the hot tub and jogged in the deep-ish area.

Instead of snacking and watching TV, we had a fun night in the water.

My pedometer results stopped around 7 p.m. so the results were lower than Tuesday:
Steps= 2690
Distance= 1.1 mile (that's my work day!)
Calories used by walking= 76

Today is another day! (Borrowed from Scarlett) I will try to walk during my lunch break and move more until bedtime.

Hope you are keeping active too!

Being in a pool sounds wonderful!! You accomplished movement even though it doesn't show up on the pedometer -- and movement was your goal!!!

Day 2

Wednesday, October 03, 2012

I was less exhausted after work on Tuesday. I wore the pedometer all day.
When I parked my car at the mall where i work, I was in the farthest parking space and added up a few more steps.
I was too busy working alone to actually have a lunch break. Too bad, no walk for me.

I was invited out for dinner and made a choice I would not usually make-- I ordered a Greek salad. I enjoyed lots of tomato, cucumber, red onion and green pepper. The dressing tasted more like oil and vinegar than what I remember Greek salad dressing to be. (Oh well.)

In the evening, I spent less time knitting than I would have liked but that translated into more steps around the house.

My numbers are an eye opener: 3,746 steps. That worked out to 1.53 miles. (Is that all?) Then the message that topped it all.... during my work day, my walking used up 106.2 calories!

Think of all the items we eat, taste and sample that would add 106 calories. It is so easy to add the calories and it takes real work and focus to convert that and use it up.

This wasn't a day of huge change, but I tried to make healthy choices throughout the day.

You are so right about calories. I just watched a segment on Dr. Oz about food sampling in the store. It is AMAZING how many calories you can consume just taste testing food, not to mention how much extra money you'll spend impulse buying the item you just tasted!!

Great choice with the salad!!

Good for you sticking with the pedometer! It's like tracking calories was for me, an eye-opening experience! New experiences are often good for us, like trying something different at the restaurant. I'd say it sounds like you are in "learning mode". emoticon
