Record Breaking Hot Weather

Tuesday, August 17, 2010

Well, the intense heat wave has finally caught up with us on the coast. We usually enjoy sea breezes and bouts of rain-- but not this summer and not this week.

I have purchased some fabric to sew a muu-muu or caftan. Remember those of the 1960's and 70's? I will have to make a pattern from memory.

They have as much form and finesse as a tent! But in the heat, a caftan glides along the body and doesn't stick or chaffe.

Yup, I'm about to sew a caftan!

How very retro of me.

I agree that in weather such as a heat wave wearing a caftan is cool. emoticon

Hey, don't you know that retro is in? You may be setting the new fashion trends!

I hope that it cools down for you soon. (Although, I must say, that I also hope that your heat wave doesn't decide to take a trip down the coastline to come and visit me!)

Happy Sewing!

Finished Sewing My Pink Ribbon Apron

Wednesday, August 11, 2010

I used to be able to sew up a project in hours, not weeks. My, how times change.

Don't ask me why I stray to ruffles and lace when I sew. Really, I don't usually go in for the Froo-froo Girlie Look.

So, there is a close up of the Pink Ribbon fabric and a bit of the ruffle and lace hem.

I'm in my apron beside the hydrangea and Stargazer lilies that have just blossomed.

I'm glad I stuck with the project and got it completed!!! YIPPEE for me.

I love aprons. Yours is beautiful. I volunteered to make 6 aprons for the girls in my daughter's book club. And then I did one for my grand-daughter in same fabric. They were thrilled with them. They chose the pattern and the fabric. It was fun making them. Then one of the book club members monogrammed an initial on the pocket for each of the girls. Thanks for commenting on my blog post. Hope you have a great day! emoticon

My "Going Green" Failure

Monday, August 09, 2010

I've been in my house almost a year...
emoticon
... and perhaps you remember praying for this to happen for me. I love living in this community.

When I arrived, I noticed 3 black compost boxes that the previous owner left in her garden. I decided to get them working again and I read up what I would have to do for functioning compost bins.

For the past 50 weeks or so, I have layered food scraps, yard clippings and loam. I have ensured that the bins are in a warm place and get an occasional watering. I purchased compost "starter". I have tried to stir things up to incorporate air.

Do I have dark, rich soil composted at the bottom? Is there a reward for trying to be "green"?

You betcha! I have more than 100 slimey slugs that visit those compost bins. (Maybe that is a positive, as I am 'grouping' them.) There is a rotting smell that I'm sure the neighbours are non too impressed about. Flies are depositing their eggs so that when I open the hatch, I get an eye-full of squirming maggots.

My partner has had enough of this experiment and wants me to shovel the contents out and kick it to the curb. Then I am supposed to rinse the 3 bins and offer them for FREE to any unsuspecting neighbour.

emoticon

I had such good intentions...
I was going to let dark, nutritious loam sprinkle through my fingers like the garden experts do on TV. I was going to add much needed top soil to my gardens of clay. (wimper... whine... sniff)

Are plastic compost bins too confining to do a good job? These ones are vented, but I think the process has become too anaerobic in my case. Would a chicken wire dump site work better than the slick black boxes that I have???

I suppose I had better retrieve my shovel and get started dismantling my slug factory.

I dont have a clue, what to do. We have a fenced in area for our garden i just take things and throw into the garden, and then it gets all mixed up, into the soil. Now i have a corner in the garden where this gets thrown and mixed up not on the plants growing there, not until winter any way. Better lick to you. emoticon emoticon

So sorry for the bad experience. I wouldn't have a clue on how to fix it...
Sounds like a compromise is in the works - whatever makes you AND your partner happy... emoticon

My Salad LOVE LETTER

Sunday, July 11, 2010

Today I was feeling zanny, so bear with me...

Before I left for work I made myself a salad for my lunch. I thought, I'll be leaving my guy at home alone and he might as well have a salad for lunch too. (It is as easy to make one salad as it is to make two while one is 'at it'.)

Here's where the love letter comes in.

I found a piece of scrap paper & pen and wrote:
Dearest--
In the fridge in my salad love letter to YOU. In it, remember that the
* Greens (romaine) is to sybolize a fresh and verdant love that I feel for you.
*Carrot to show you bright colour and how you brighten my day!
*Purple cabbage- bold and deeply toned. Think of this as my passion for you, Dear.
*Walnuts & Almonds- I love how we can be silly and a bit 'nutty' at times for fun & laughter.
*Strawberry slices- You have always been so sweet and tender with me.
*Pumpkin Seeds (green pepitas)- Hey, where did THEY come from?!? Surprises of the nicest kind remind me of you. I love how original you can be with our time together; you always put thought and interest into our date nights.
*Please choose your own dressing- be spontaneous as I know you can be. Also thank you for handling my "vinegar days" so gallantly and for allowing me to soothe your tough days with "oils" and fragrances. (massage)
Bon Appetit,
K

How about writing a love note to yourself using fresh and healthy ingredients that fuel your body? Come on-- you deserve to be zanny too!!

What Would You Like To See FINISHED?

Friday, July 09, 2010

I don't multi-task well. On many days, anyone can see that I started the laundry... but it isn't put away. I bought some groceries and food items will still be on the counter, again, not stored away properly.
The vacuum cleaner may be over here; the sewing machine & supplies over there; and not a single task is completed.

I can get SCATTERED very easily.

Now, enough about me.... If today you could have one goal finished, one project completed, what would you choose?

I really need to clean my supposedly walk-in closet. When we clean our apartment and I don't have a place for something but don't want to get rid of it just yet, into the closet it goes. I can't really walk into my walk-in closet anymore. I can reach to the back of it, but I can't walk into it. So that's the project I need to work on.

Oh I am like this too! I have a lot of unfinished projects. If I had to pick one, I think I would say finish going through all my possessions for the pre-move purge! The sorted books are in the back bedroom, the other stuff is piled all over the walk-in closet. Thanks for the nudge.

I am a tidy, tidy person most times. I need when I do my scrapbooks put back things I use for them in there place after. So this weekend . I will do it.

See usually I just close the door as I have a room for that and then I have the other room for my computer and book case of books. That is usually tidy the computer room. Thank goodness.

I would finish cleaning out my closet. I have fat clothes and medium clothes and now I have my skinny clothes. I just hate to get rid of certain things that seem to good to give away.
